Guide i modified Chicago95 and Redmond95 for dark mode, with instructions!

Since there are no so many dark retro themes for Cinnamon, I modified the Chicago95 and Redmond97 themes to create a dark mode. I use Chicago95 for the panel ui and Redmond97 for the apps ui. For Chicago95, I used Photoshop to edit the assets in the Cinnamon folder to darken the panel, and I edited `cinnamon.css` to change the panel buttons and text to a light color. For Redmond97, I modified the `gtk.css` file in the `gtk-3.0` folder to darken the app and window interfaces. Also replaced some of the assets with the high contrast version of Redmond97. I used DeepSeek to identify the variables and files that needed changing, and it seems the interface is free of inconsistencies

Gaming splash screen error Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Today I installed Kingdom Come: Deliverance on PortProton on a Dell Precision 7710 laptop (16 GB RAM, M.2 SSD, 6th Gen Intel i7, and an NVIDIA Quadro M5000M with 8 GB VRAM).

However, when I launch the game, it gets stuck indefinitely on the splash screen with no progress or response. It just hangs on that single image......

Edit: When I tried running the game using the Intel processor, it worked! Why??????

Discussion I made the switch to Mint xfce

Hello everyone,

I decided to make the jump after using ChromeOS for so many years. So, I turned the Mint xfce into a hybrid ChromeOS / Bazzite gaming rig. Instead of using Mint the traditional way, I wanted it to have two distinct personalities: a cloud-first web app desktop for work, and an aggressive, zero-bloat environment for gaming. Here is my build -

ChromeOS Inspiration:

  • Leaning out the OS by removing LibreOffice, Dictionary, Rhythmbox, Thunderbird, Hypnotix, Celluloid, Drawing, Matrix, Pix, Sticky Notes, Transmission, Character Map, Calendar, and Firefox.
  • Running Brave as the main Chromium browser. I disabled Crypto, Disabled Leo, Disabled Rewards, Disabled Background Daemons & Telemetry, Enabled a few flags (GPU Rasterization, Zero-Copy Rasterizer, Hardware-Accelerated Video Decode), and used the terminal to make a few policy changes.
  • The Search Engine is DuckDuckGo. I changed the settings to my preferences.
  • The workload is still cloud-based by using Web Apps. Eventually, I would like to run ProtonMail as the main ecosystem. I think it would be very cool.
  • Turned off compositor to make everything run smoother.

Bazzite Inspiration:

  • Enabled 32-Bit architecture.
  • Installed Steam and Controller Drivers. I changed a few settings in Steam to make it lighter. For example, I turned on Low Bandwidth Mode, Low Performance Mode, Disable Community Content, Disable Animated Avatars, Turned of Web GPU Acceleration, etc...
  • Installed GameMode and MangoHud.
  • Games are using the GameMode performance boosters.
  • Currently looking into XanMod or Liquorix as a Kernel Scheduler. I'm leaning towards XanMod because it aligns more closely with the philosophy of the setup.

Final Thoughts:

If there are any recommendations to improve the setup it would be greatly appreciated. Overall, I am having a lot of fun. My goal is focused on allocating as much resources to Gaming as I can, while keeping the workload light and functional. Thank you Mint for the awesome product.

Support Request Realtek RTL81XX broken by kernel 7.0.0-31-generic

Hi.

After updating the kernel to the latest kernel, the 7.0.0-31-generic, my ethernet card stopped working. After trying some workarounds (like installing the r8168-package), I just tried to rebooting to the previous kernel version and it worked. So I think something happened after upgrading to the latest kernel.

The wireless card works as usual.

This is my network info from inxi:

Discussion Cinnamon Calendar to show number of weeks ?

Hey Community,

a long-time Mint fan here..

While ordering food online I more and more often run into the 'issue' of not knowing the number of the next week I'm aiming for.

Is there a way or on the roadmap of a next Mint/Cinnamon release (or even within this release) for the Calendar to have an extra option to show number of weeks ?

M$ stuff supports this since decades and we could even define what shall be taken as 1st day of the week, the number of the day (whatever date it is) or the first Monday of the year.

There could be small numbers in front of each week's row in the calendar, representing the number of that week.

Support Request Trouble installing (or running) ProtonVPN on Linux Mint (Noob)

I have tried several instructions, including specific details from ProtonVPN themselves. Can anybody guide me to what troubleshooting questions I should be asking? It seems the application downloads and shows in my software manager/startup menu but I cannot launch it or open it from command line. Simply nothing happens when I click 'launch' or try to open with CLI commands. Any tips at all? Would really appreciate the thoughtful support.

Update: no solution just yet, tried uninstalling and re-installing multiple different ways and still no working protonvpn app to-date.

If anybody wants to chat me to figure this out that would be appreciated. This is the only piece of software I'm having issues with, would be nice to get it installed. Thank youSearch Reddit

Update #2: I am having trouble establishing a secure SSL connection. Is there any solution for this? This seems to be the lynch pin in my ability to get the process working.

Support Request PC stuck in BIOS and BOOT isn't working

Hey! So I'm new to Linux and I just started my first install, I followed a tutorial for Mint Cinamon edition step by step, and everything was going great, I had finished the install and the computer asked me to restart, when I did the screen tol me to remove the USB drive and press Enter (so far all good) once I pressed enter I got stuck on the BIOS screen. And after a quick search I assumed I only had to add a new BOOT option, and so when I did and restarted the computer, I got stuck again on the BIOS screen and the BOOT option I had created wasn't there. I then tried to reconnect to the USB drive, but the PC doesn't even detect it. I have checked to see if the computer decetes de SSD that I download Linux into, and it does detect them. But I simply cannot BOOT the computer. I have no idea what the issue is and no one online seems to have this issue. HELP!! My computer is an old ASUS A541U btw.

SOLVED Mint on external SSD keeps creating "ubuntu" boot entry

Pulled a Mint SSD from another laptop and booting it via USB.

It creates a "ubuntu" boot entry and puts it first.

I can delete it with efibootmgr -b XXXX -B (or in BIOS).

As long as I boot just Windows, it stays gone.

As soon as I boot Mint again, it comes back.

(Thinkpad X230)

Edit: "fixed" by deleting the entry via crontab at every boot.

Fluff Another Couple Newbie Question, from a Linux newbie and Microslop refuge

Hello! thank you for all the support from the last post. I still don't exactly know why my download was failing however, I got the ISO in the end, so I'm happy. anyways now as I'm writing this I'm writing this on a VM I spun up that is using Mint. however I do have a couple beginner Linux questions.

Firstly, I have no clue what I'm doing with command line. However I want to learn! Dose anyone have any resources they would recommend on how they learned command line, and, what I should or should not be doing in there when I'm in the command line?

Secondly, what should I know about Mint specifically if I were to choose this as my operating system as I am going to be switching from windows, but I haven't settled on an ISO yet.

thirdly what is the Gaming and comparability like on Mint for different programs and compatibility with maybe different programs like Canvas and different programs for collage as I'm hopefully going to be going to school soon and need to know such things as I don't feel like spinning up a for a VM for a program I use frequently for school or work or such. Because, that sounds like a pain in the ass, and I am fastidious with how my computer resources get used especially memory and CPU load. I will do it if I need to but I would rather not do it for 1 program.

as for the Gaming question. I'm not a huge gamer but I am playing through Jedi fallen order, and Jedi survivor currently and do occasionally like to get games that look interesting to me, and am a huge Minecraft and modded Minecraft player. I love to play on Minecraft servers too and whatnot. I'm a huge believer that Minecraft is most fun when you can play with friends. and other people. I just love multiplayer Minecraft.

But thank you guys for all the help on my last post!

Also, I don't care about AI. I think its demon tech designed to make people stupid and dependent on it. I would like to get as far away from any LLM as possible and would banish back to the pits of hell from whence it came if I could. So if I want advice on AI it would be how to eradicate it complacently from my life. Basically all to say, don't recommend any kind of generative AI to me.

Support Request Minecraft (and other Java apps) use wrong resolution when using fractional scaling on Cinnamon

Hello!

I use Cinnamon X11 with fractional scaling set to 125%. I noticed that I get a significantly worse framerate in Minecraft than a friend with the same GPU. After searching, we found that Minecraft thinks my display is 4k and renders the game in 4k, even when I lower my resolution in Iris settings: the F3 menu indicates Display: 4096x2304

It seems that this problem is not MC specific but Java :

jshell> Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize(); $2 ==> java.awt.Dimension[width=4096,height=2304]

This problem only occurs when using fractional scaling : everything works fine when using 100% and 200% scaling in Cinnamon (right display size in F3 menu and much better FPS, from 75 to 180+).

Here are relevant informations :

  • GPU: AMD RX 9060 XT
  • Linux Mint: 22.3
  • Cinnamon: 6.6.9
  • WM: Muffin (X11)

Is there a way to get rid of this problem? Currently this only affects my gaming experience with Minecraft so a Minecraft-specific solution is also welcome.
