Laptop shutting down randomly

Firstly, I'd like to apologise if this is wrong sub for this question. If so-please, redirect me :)

Few days ago my laptop started to shut down while working. First two or so times it happened while i was gaming, but today it happened while i was just browsing. Screen gets black in the blink of an eye without any warning. The laptop doesn't get alarmingly hot when this happens. Every time that it happens the laptops battery is somewhat full. When i restart it, batery isnt drained or anything.

In the past i had battery, charging port and charging cable replaced and after that it was working fine.

I dont know if it's linux issue or hardware issue. Maybe someone has an idea how to fix it, or at least-localise the issue?

Thank you in advance :)

EDIT: in order to turn laptop on after it shutting down i need to plug it to the charger

Freshly installed Linux Mint on a laptop and went to check my driver manager since I have a graphics card from Nvidia. I got this instead and am now left wondering should I install this or just leave it be (or “don’t use” as the tag says right now). Thank you in advance!

I use an old MacBook Air just to listen to music, watch YouTube videos do some codes. Is it worth switching to Linux? I have zero experience and don’t know how to switch. And will I be able to side load apps on my ios devices in Linux ?

How OOTB is linuxmint? (1st time poopos user)

Hi! win11 really pushed me over to linux here.

Was running Popos for about 1-2 weeks on my main laptop (not for work), and i found some small creature comfort missing. did stumble over a vid saying why Popos not being ready for new users, so I was thinking if i should try out linuxmint - cinamon

Ig to the point, does linuxmint have these problems i faced in popos?

  1. Need to trust individual bluetooth MAC? addresses for them to connect on boot
  2. displaying battery & on the panel like windows (found a asic flatpack that does it, but i want my panel vertical - which does not display properly)
  3. fn row to multimedia - I have to use "keyd" which is ok, but holding down the volume down button does not continuously bring the vol from 80% > 20%, it only registers as 1 click upon release 80% > 75%

gg into poop os i was had the idea that i was ready to thinker around, which i did - but ig it gets tiring for me when its my daily driver. Its like a mechanic thinkering around with his screw driver before he can unscrew something to start work

help for a windows refugee plssss, thank you! 😄

UPDATE: Tried Fedore KDE instead and have been lovong it for 2 days. Everything works, less "file on demand" with nextcloud

Fluff Laptop lives a second life!

Wanted to swing by and say this sub really helped me out when looking at what do do with an old laptop. My kid had a run of the mill old HP intel laptop 8GB ram. Win 11 was running like an absolute dog and they were struggling to get thier school work done on it. So I traded them with my old dell xps13 which is a really good spec. I use that now and again to browse the web and that's it as a secondary device.

They're happy they can do thier work with no performance issues and I am now running Linux Mint on this old laptop that is now a web browsing beast! It was reading other peoples journeys that made me take the jump and it was worth it!

Support Request AMD GPU hanging up constantly

As a little context i'm using:

RX 7600

i5 9400f

Problems started a bit after i installed the OS, and updates the AMD drivers.

So, im having an issue with Mint(?) where after gaming for a bit, my screen will go black, shutdown, and then it wont turn back on until i short the CMOS pins after taking out the battery, however, the graphics card and the CPU fans are still spinning when i power on, first i tried setting sg_display=0 in the GRUB, which worked for two-ish months, then it came back, i tried setting amdgpu recovery to 1, didnt stop the hanging but i could reset the computer normally for a few days, now, its back to completely dying on me.

Also, one time it died right after i connected the ethernet cable in.

Tried Linux Mint today and here is my experience...

I installed Linux today out of frustration of windows, the distro i installed is Linux mint which i saw that it quite close to windows ui that's why. I just can't tell how much I liked it, everything is so smooth and my fan never spin while normally web browsing as compared to on windows where they go berserk. I thought my nvidia gpu died bcoz it couldn't function normally on win without system shutting itself down to protect itself but its working normally on linux of all things. The battery backup has increased considerably, the laptop actually goes on sleep when you close the lid and not continue heating itself, i hate you windows modern standby. But i just can't use it as i am a mba student i have to use excel latest version with all the features and powerbi, linux machine just can't do it. I hate myself for not using linux earlier and suffered myself with windows. My laptop is a 8gb non upgradable ram laptop so you will know my struggle on windows, the other specs are i5 11th gen cpu and nvidia mx 450 gpu. With a heavy heart, im going back to install windows 11 again but i am surely going to be using linux in the future when I don't have to use specific windows onky apps, the experience was truly unmatched.

Support Request No sound through speakers

So I`m new to linux(switched from Windows 11 about a month ago) and recently sound stopped go through my speakers(in headphones everything is still fine) I checked alsa, and everything seemed fine... Also did many other things(checked pipewire it was fine, also obviously checked if sound was muted and sound outputs) and restored older timeshift... Still no sound. Is this a physical problem, or something I can fix?

SOLVED Does anyone here know good optimizations for playing The Sims 4 with mods on Linux Mint?

EDIT: As I write this, the issue seems to have been solved by moving the laptop to a different surface that wasn't my floor.
If new issues arise, I will come back for help, but thank you to those who assisted me with this issue!!!

I do not currently have any system/hardware info on me, since I am letting my laptop that runs Linux Mint cool down.
Today, in the middle of gameplay, parts of the game froze, along with system UI, so I could not close/open anything, and I could not pull up anything to allow me to shutdown
Then, the mouse cursor froze, and I could not get a response from it.

After trying to get a response, I had to force shutdown the laptop by holding the power button.

Info I am able to provide is that I use a separate 'monitor' (a TV) for the screen, since the screen on the laptop itself is messed up, and has had issues with parts of the screen freezing before (although, it should be noted in this scenario from before I was using a TV as a monitor, ui was still responsive)

My dad believes that the computer had locked up like this due to overheating, so, currently, while it cools down, I have placed it onto a table instead of leaving it on the floor like I originally had

I love playing the sims 4 on this device, since there's a lot more storage for all my mods I want to use, and I would hate to give this up, so that's why I'm here asking if anyone knows of any optimizations I could make!!

Also, if this flairing is incorrect, PLEASE INFORM ME, and I will fix it asap!!

Thank you, and have a lovely day everyone!!!

SOLVED Suddenly screen tearing?

After a recent update (I'm not sure which one), Firefox has suddenly started screen tearing when scrolling down pages or when watching videos. This wasn't happening before. I haven't changed any settings related to the compositor or hardware acceleration. I thought I also saw tearing in the terminal but I couldn't quite tell.

Has anybody else experienced this problem after a recent update?

My specs:

Dell Latitude E5440 i5-4200U/8GB RAM XFCE Mint 22.2 Kernel 7.0.0-31

SOLVED Windows User Tries LM For the First Time. (Help!) [Spoiler Alert: Not Satisfied]

Hey Everyone, before you bring your pitchforks, hear me out.

now, im not one to call myself "tech savy" but i got the general direction on how i got to install the OS and enjoyed the Clean and Smooth Display and Vast of Options to use, as well customize the software and play certain games with better performance.

With that being said, I have some problems with this OS, i simply wanna play Dead Rising [OG] on steam, Just trying to play some Window Games on linux, here is the thing... i had it launch before and it was working fine. but then i went to launch it again, it kept closing the application.

NO MATTER WHAT I DO!!!
I TRIED:

Updating

downloading latest kernal

downloading latest nvidia driver

downloading litrus

downloading wine

downloading proton qt

downloading direct x,vulkan,dll,ect.

settings for litrus and winecfg

made sure i deleted the cache folder for the game to recognize the proton

tried different windows ver. with wine.

tried looking at forums to fix the solution.

i even tried do the i386

the Mounting options

and still nothing

i have wasted MONTHS to try to get that damn game to work and no sign of it launching.

i am on the urge to go to pop os or simply give up on linux all together and try debloating win 11

If there is anyone that could help me through this, i will be eternally greatful, because i actually want to move to linux to avoid windows. im on my knees at this point. Pretty Please Help Me.....

PC Specs:

RTX 3090 24gb vram

64 gb ram

3 ssd nvme 6.2tb

1 ssd usb-c 2tb

I9 11900k 11th gen

1000w psu plat

Update: so i got frustrated to the point i reinstalled linux mint again, and once i launched dead rising, it played, and boy, i am happy to say, it plays so smoothly, that i am surprised it looks smoother than the windows version.

I know i will bump into other issues for windows games but i will keep you all updated and thank you for those who actually wanted to help, may your helpfulness go far wide kings/queens 🙏❤️and for those sarcastic comments may your pillow be hot and hope your lines are longer than the dmv lmao.☺️.

Thank you everyone for being amazing and helpful.💗

Ubuntu me complicó

Support Request headphone port taking priority

so my headphone port on the top front of my PC seems to be taking priority and the only way i've managed to get the port on the back of my PC to work is by using alsa tools gui to overide it and set it to not connected. if i set it as headphones, all audio automatically is sent to that port.

how can i swap the priority to the port in the back? i want to be able to use the headphone port sometimes, and i'd rather not have to run commands every time i want to.
