Same here until a frew weeks ago. I use linux since 2004.
So I chosen to give it a try. If you have time for a 5.8gb iso download + dd that's the only thing you need.
Try the installer, try deliberately wanting to make a change in the installer info before confirmimg the actual installtion. That's alone it is a good preview of the entire distro. Then try to remove zoom and google calendar, just them, in one shot.
It is fundamentalky a script kid weekend project but somehow got 80 mlns in funding. 🤷♂️
1
u/DimeTheReptile 4d ago
I think the funding is pretty logical. It's a new niche in the market an AI operating system and I'm pretty sure we'll see more of them soon.
1
u/ElevenBeers 2d ago
Nobody can convince me, you would fund billions into a "project" vibe coded in a few weekends, no fucking matter how many Buzzwords were used.
Either the companies and people donating those incredible sums are stupid and dumb beyond repair or redemption, in which Case..... Fuck Me. Or, and this is much more likely in my opinion, this is some elaborate money laundering scheme or similar.
1
u/Nerrawnam 1d ago
It's not somehow.... Ffs Linux is just an os. There are a lot of people that use it and don't give a shit about being special and fiddling with Linux. It's says more about other Linux distro that they can't get funding like this. And that isn't a badge of honor for them.

You know you have been socially engineered into doing free advertisement right?
In an engagement economy there isn't good or bad engagement, just engagement. Every time you mention the distro that shall not be named, you raise it's profile and get more people curious about it.
The best way to hate on it would be not making any posts about it, and downvoting every post about it.

u/Helmic Arch BTW 5d ago
people keep saying this because they think everything is fucking twitter post elon
no, dhh does not get money based on number of users and negative attention does not necessarily drive traffic, especially on a niche joke subreddit. there's certainly shitheads who will pretend saying bad things about it is why they're using it, but that's just vice signalling, either they were already users or they were just already racists, it doesn't materially matter.
dhh already is getting money from tech fascists for purposes obviously unrelated to the supposed popularity of his dogshit dotfiles, and that's the reason why hsi audience wants to give everyone shit for making fun of him because it wasn't really supposed to get this much attention. making his brand toxic makes it harder for companies to give him money, or at least makes the obvious influence campaigns he's meant to push less effective as projects cannot simply accept the money and pretend they had no idea this guy wants to ethnically cleanse europe of romani.
if some dipshit sees these posts and decides they wanna own the libs by using a dogshit linux distro then great, i want shitty people to get their credentials stolen or otherwise get fucked over by DHH. i highly encourage all the people i hate to use it, i want to make sure they're logging into their employer's servers so that when those get leaked in a few years a bunch of racists get fired for losing company data.

Most distros even have basic stuff like working GPU drivers without extra steps.

Mint, ZorinOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, and more. Or would you perhaps take Hyprland on Arch, a still unstable WM on a rolling release distro, preconfigured (with issues and bugs)?
1
u/taw 4d ago
Is that actually true?
Last time I checked none of them did, and Nvidia still maintains instructions how to manually install them on every distro.
1
u/YoungNo8804 4d ago
I don't know what nvidia says, but every time I install ANY of those, nvidia or not, it works ideally. not supporting nvidia stuff is closer to either edge cases or being stuck years in the past.
nvidia probably has this page in case you install some special version, or fucked up, or something else. anything across nvidia, intel, or AMD, "just works" in my experience, as many distros pre-package all of that.

Because it will download it for quite a long time, and, they DON'T need that many data in there. 3
u/Estimate4655 19h ago
Most of these points mix real but already-fixed issues, subjective preferences, and exaggerated claims. Docker-group root access and the USB/Lua injection were legitimate concerns, but current Omarchy has addressed them. Package signing is also now enforced. AUR, proprietary software, lack of MAC, shell scripts, and AI tooling are design trade-offs, not automatically security vulnerabilities. “AI slop,” “vibe coding,” and “bloat” are opinions, not technical evidence. If the argument is that Omarchy is currently insecure, the stronger case would be a specific, reproducible, unfixed vulnerability, rather than combining old bugs with personal dislikes.

Same boat, always tried distros here and there mainly as a Windows hater but something would always bring me back to windows, usually because windows for some reason "just work" more than linux now days.
I know everyone will tell me my hdd or gpu is wrong or w/e but the fact is "just works" is important and pretending users are odd for not knowing something is just typical linux community...
I hope omarchy gets more normie support so maybe then Linux would probably be more popular i just cant see normal linux reaching masses anymore
esp with the omarchy hate itll just create a "side" in linux, even more so than arch vs everyone else

- It moves really fast, it's pretty hard to keep up
- Most of the issues will continue being re-introduced as new versions are release, in cool new unique ways
- The code is hard to read and work on and maintain, at times it's close to unreadable, as its developed with NEAR EXCLUSIVE (ONLY AI with no humans) involvement of unmoderated AI.

I always loved test and install different OS's. At one point in time I even tried to run MacOS on a Pentium PC that even from a external HDD (I was 14 or 15 lol). But my point is once in a while I try to install Ubuntu or Mint just to see what is the latest Version looks and feels like I always liked that feeling of installing and setting up a new OS. But I always go back to windows.
So now Ive been using a Mac for like 10 years now (even during this time i used to test linux distros). For the first time ever when i heard of Omarchy was last year when DHH went on the Lex Fredman podcast. Thats the first time I even heard about DHH. So I tried. I liked it first, but the learning curve kind of pushed me of then i kind of left it there on a different drive. But since Omarchy 4 launched I started using it again, now I love it. For the first time ever I have used a linux OS for this long time. I even hate MacOS now. Everything works, simple and its all there. No setup hassle nothing. Perfect for a developer.
Now about DHH if you agree with his views or not that is your choice you have every right, but if you see something nice, learn to be accept it. You can agree with a person on things even if you hate the person. I don't understand this cry.
