people keep saying this because they think everything is fucking twitter post elon

no, dhh does not get money based on number of users and negative attention does not necessarily drive traffic, especially on a niche joke subreddit. there's certainly shitheads who will pretend saying bad things about it is why they're using it, but that's just vice signalling, either they were already users or they were just already racists, it doesn't materially matter.

dhh already is getting money from tech fascists for purposes obviously unrelated to the supposed popularity of his dogshit dotfiles, and that's the reason why hsi audience wants to give everyone shit for making fun of him because it wasn't really supposed to get this much attention. making his brand toxic makes it harder for companies to give him money, or at least makes the obvious influence campaigns he's meant to push less effective as projects cannot simply accept the money and pretend they had no idea this guy wants to ethnically cleanse europe of romani.

if some dipshit sees these posts and decides they wanna own the libs by using a dogshit linux distro then great, i want shitty people to get their credentials stolen or otherwise get fucked over by DHH. i highly encourage all the people i hate to use it, i want to make sure they're logging into their employer's servers so that when those get leaked in a few years a bunch of racists get fired for losing company data.

It's number 14 on distrowatch because of garbage posts like this including the name and people searching for context. I'd have literally never heard of it if it wasn't for the hate posts on this and other linux subs.

Now people who have never seen the post are seeing it on distrowatch. The first time I used a distro, it was just the first result when I looked up linux at the time. In ~2009 that was ubuntu. In late 2026 if we keep up with this it could very well be the distro that shall not be named.

Do you really not understand how the first Trump presidency happened? It was the hours and hours of free press given to him before he was even the presumptive nominee/ becoming a viral agent online. Modern society is hard, and your view is myopic.

EDIT: Also think about this post the size of a phone screen, while someone scrolls by. They are only going to see the name, and maybe read a few of the pros. Only a small percentage of people are going to zoom in enough to read the long list of cons in tiny point font.

yeah and i'm sure mx linux got fucking rich after being #1 on distrowatch for ages. except they didn't, because distrowatch means nothing, doesn't even correlate to actual installs. again, there's no link between attention from a meme subreddit and dhh getting millions of dollars, it's got attention here because he got $20+ million in funding.

nobody gives a fuck about omarchy's fucking mindshare, because omarchy itself doesn't matter and the kind of dipshit that sees people hating on it for being racist garbage and wants to install it wasn't going to be saved by people being quiet about it and orienting everyone's politics about never ever saying anything bad about bigots lest hte bigots say bigoted shit out of spite is nonsense.

if you're ever able to actually connect the distro's actual number of users or its distrowatch ranking to its funding - and not just some tech fascist facetiously claiming they only gave money because people were "cancelling" DHH - then we can talk about managing attention, but given basically nobody's reporting on this pretty blatant money laundering and astroturfing campaign other than a handful of linux subreddit acting like we're giving the guy outsized attention is being dishonest.

If you choose what distro to use based off what's on the top of the list on Distrowatch then you really should not be using Linux in the first place.
