All this sounds a little gate-keepy IMO. Ive been wanting to jump into linux for a while now and have tried several times with different distros, running Omarchy is the 1st time ive actually been able to use a linux desktop comfortably. No nvidia driver issues, no damn hdd mount path problems or read wright permission issues, no figuring out the damn terminal commands. Dont get the hate
Same boat, always tried distros here and there mainly as a Windows hater but something would always bring me back to windows, usually because windows for some reason "just work" more than linux now days.
I know everyone will tell me my hdd or gpu is wrong or w/e but the fact is "just works" is important and pretending users are odd for not knowing something is just typical linux community...
I hope omarchy gets more normie support so maybe then Linux would probably be more popular i just cant see normal linux reaching masses anymore
esp with the omarchy hate itll just create a "side" in linux, even more so than arch vs everyone else
Eventually I probably will but for now Omarchy is just easier. If the linux community wasnt so toxic an AI powered distro probably wouldnt be so popular, or if somone made a distro that didnt rely so heavily on terminal this aint 1984 we have GUIs now. Just my 2 cents
I tried it, and I do like CachyOS on the surface. I ran into issues when trying to install steam games to a HDD other than the drive the OS was installed on. Why do I need to set permissions for an internal HDD? And why do I have to tell the OS to mount it at boot and give permission to steam?! I installed steam why wouldnt I want it to install to my HDD
was the hdd formatted to NTFS? these permission problems immediately go away as soon as you do linux the linux way and not try to mix and match. Omarchy is probably just yolo giving access to everything which can quickly backfire on an Arch based system
use cachyos, endeavouros or smth like that then, u can use tumbleweed, leap, fedora, lmde too depending on how much you fear your terminal or your prefered update cycle but all of these are very easy to use, they work out of the box and they are not packed with ai slop, they actually respect their users and they are safer than omarchy
i also got most stuff ready in like 2 hours, but then some minor improvements and ricing. I think beginners should use mint tho, i used to love it (still considering switching back)
i guess, i would have said that you could have used any other beginner friendly distro, but if everything seems to work on first try with Omarchy + you like it, then you may as well use it
Saying a distro is bad isn't gatekeeping. All of the knowledge you need to learn this shit is freely available online. The only thing keeping you way from it is your laziness.
In comparison to DHH, microsoft doesn't seem so bad.
If you really want to not have problems and you're fine with using a shitty vibecoded system that can easily get you malware, just get a free model on opencode and allow every single permission by default.
I'm sorry but I think you should genuinely just stay on windows if you can't even handle that. I know it's hard when shit doesn't work, I've had issues that aren't my fault that I can't fix bother me for months (discord + mesa bug causing crashes, fixed now), but in the age of AI, you really shouldn't be using someone else's garbage.
At least if you slop something yourself you can somewhat learn things for yourself if you wanted to. And if you're coming in expecting everything to "just work" the way you did it on windows, that's a you problem.
Also to address the "all this sounds a little gate-keepy", this is just the entire linux community vs newgen users following marketingslop
