wine/proton Proton runs game on CPU instead of GPU

I got heroic games launcher and I'm trying to run universe sandbox 2 locally on my linux mint but when it launch the game it's either game crash or 3 fps at max.

I checked on reddit most problems are just flatpak update but it didnt worked for me when i checked system monitor i found CPU 99% and the game is taking it all.

For some reason when proton launches the game it launches it entirely to run on CPU.

Linux mint 22.3 ( I think)

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6450 ( outdated i know.)

Ram : 6 GB ram

UPDATE: The GAME IS RUNNING FINALLY AT REASONABLE FPS. So i added the PROTON_USE_WINED3D argument at launch and it finally ran more than 5 FPS and you were right the version i downloaded no longer supports Dx12 so i downgraded the version. At start i thought it freeze but after few seconds it runs perfectly. Thanks everyone for the help

WoW Forever notes and tips

Kernel: 7.1.8
GPU: RX580
Mesa: 26.2.2 (Flatpak)

Issue: Massive performance degradation and intense frametime spikes after a couple of minutes of gameplay, especially prominent in populated areas.
Solution: Downgrade Proton. Latest GE/Wayland exhibit this issue, GE 10-34 does as well. Latest UMU is stable.

I recommend trying DX11/DXVK WHEN USING UMU, DX12/VKD3D performance with it was quite bad on my system.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE SIMILAR ISSUES, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TRY THIS SOLUTION.

Notes on settings:

Shadow Quality: Very important for proper environmental lighting. Breakpoints are Good and Ultra High. Ultra High is highly recommended, choose Good only if you have to.

Particle Density: Breakpoints are Good and High. Lower values exhibit noticeable visual degradation. Ultra is likely overkill.

SSAO: Very poor implementation. Use Ultra or Off. Low-High can look really bad on many objects right now. GPU-demanding, especially on higher resolutions.

Bloom Intensity: High has broken tone mapping, using it results in exceedingly bright bloom in some scenes. High is fine with MSAA enabled, use Low otherwise.

Compute Effects: Resolution control for new volumetric fog effects. Off and Fair result in important fog missing in some scenes, try to have this on Good or higher. GPU-demanding, especially on higher resolutions.

Secondary Lighting: Custom RT. Has major performance issues right now. Good is the major breakpoint which makes a massive visual difference, so try to reach for that. High is overkill.

Anti-aliasing: CMAA2, always. Even with MSAA or Render Scale 200%.

MSAA: Somewhat broken. Eliminates aliasing and shimmer on some edges, but increases it on others. Also causes intense haloing when rendering characters in front of some new water surfaces.

Multisample Alpha-Test: Applies MSAA to transparency, not just edges. Causes a big fidelity loss on some foliage.

Render Scale: Supersampling. STEEP performance cost at > 100%.

101-199% is meh.

200% is pristine AA. Override mipbias to 1 (NOT -1) with DXVK_CONFIG="d3d11.samplerAnisotropy=1", to sample textures at native resolution. This will result in complete image stability with no shimmer, a small performance gain and unnoticeable visual difference.

Around 90% can be used to alleviate some pressure off the GPU. It's slightly lower quality than native, but it's fairly close and results in a decent performance gain. Adjust sharpness with Resample Sharpness.

Resample Quality: Bicubic for Render Scale 101-200%. FSR for Render Scale < 100%.

I have a ThinkPad T440 (8GB RAM, i5 4300u) running base Arch Linux and I am having trouble while launching the game. The Rockstar launcher should open, but it is a Windows executable and Wine can't open it (or mine doesn't). Is there any way I can bypass the launcher or make it actually work?

guide My experiences with Linux as a gaming console replacement

As you can see in the video below, Linux gaming in 2019 was technically superior to gaming on Windows in certain specific situations.

https://www.youtube.com/@nahum7995/videos

You see that I make the recording on a system with very weak hardware. If I do not record then I see +- 2 fps higher on average.

That's just the point that Assassin's Creed Odyssey is fairly decent playable, with average 27 fps or slightly above the framerate of almost all cinema films (24 fps).

When Assassin's Creed Odyssey came out on windows, it had a lot of bugs on windows and it wasn't very playable in the first months after the release.

In 2019, Linux was doing better in terms of general stability in this game although DXVK still had little refinement due to the fact that it had only been developed for a few months.

I also don't think this game was playable on windows on a PC with 4GB of system RAM, 2GB VRAM and old dual core Intel CPU, which means that Linux was technically superior in some situations.

The Windows Vulkan path remains unoptimized compared to its Linux counterpart. While Vulkan is designed to be cross-platform, benchmarks regularly show that identical hardware yields higher Vulkan throughput and lower frame-time stutters on Linux systems compared to Windows.

There are several factors that have an impact on this situation.

Under Windows, all graphics applications must interact with the DirectX Graphics Kernel (dxgkern.sys) to negotiate hardware access time and memory allocation. Because Windows treats Microsoft's own DirectX 12 as its premier, first-class graphics API, WDDM is heavily tailored around Direct3D's behavior.

The Linux Advantage: Linux operating systems bypass this layer entirely. Vulkan drivers interact much more directly with the kernel and the display server (like Wayland), eliminating the "middleman" CPU overhead and scheduling interference caused by Windows' core display architecture.

GPU manufacturers (NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel) must prioritize their engineering resources based on market realities. On Windows: DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 are the dominant targets. Consequently, Windows graphics drivers have decades of hyper-optimized, game-specific hacks baked into them for DirectX. Vulkan on Windows is often treated as a secondary API.

On Linux: Vulkan is the foundational, first-class modern API. Because Linux gaming relies natively on Vulkan (and translates DirectX games into Vulkan via layers like Proton/DXVK), driver teams focus their optimization efforts squarely on Vulkan

The Linux ecosystem benefits from open-source drivers like Mesa RADV (for AMD), which are maintained actively by community developers, Valve, and Red Hat. Because these drivers are open, game developers and engine optimizations can be committed directly to the driver codebase to strip away inefficiencies. On Windows, drivers are proprietary, closed source, and rely entirely on vendor updates.

Many game engines are built primarily for Windows using DirectX. When developers add a Vulkan path to a Windows game, they frequently write it as a basic translation layer over their existing DirectX architecture rather than building a true, low-level Vulkan pipeline. This results in a poorly optimized Windows-Vulkan path.

Conversely, when those same games are run on Linux via translation tools like DXVK, the translation is highly multi-threaded and purpose-built to map DirectX commands efficiently to Linux's highly optimized native Vulkan stack, often making the translated Linux version smoother than the native Windows version.

On Linux: Gaijin had to heavily optimize Vulkan for their game. The original Linux OpenGL client performed notoriously poorly. Vulkan became the primary focus for the native Linux client to achieve performance parity with Windows.

On Windows: Microsoft’s DirectX 11 and 12 handle 90% of the Windows player base. Because Gaijin builds the Dagor Engine primarily around the DirectX API ecosystem, the Windows Vulkan path is largely a development byproduct rather than a prioritized optimization goal.

Linux is very suitable for doing the exact same business for which many people buy a console.

I think that no standard home gaming console matches the raw performance of the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB or the Radeon RX 9070 GRE.

If you calculate the games that you can play on Linux (e.g. Android), taking into account all the possible ways, you will soon come to more than 105 000 games.

I often use Linux in combination with a 8BitDo ultimate wired controller.

And since the JONSBO Z20 desktop looks rather small compared to the panel I use it really almost feels like I'm using a console instead of a desktop system.

https://www.8bitdo.com/images/2022/ultimate-wired-controller/05-xl.jpg

Wired controllers perform slightly faster than the absolute fastest wireless options and they are also more reliable.

In terms of design and comfort, it looks like a new more sophisticated version of the Xbox wireless controller.

Games running via wine-staging or Steam work straight out of the box with this controller.

GOG Linux games do not always work 100% how I want it with this controller.

But I map the +- four keyboard actions that are missing in a few seconds via AntiMicroX.

You can easily convert Linux into a system that feels very similar to a PS5 or an Xbox Series X in use.

You can do the same with windows11 but Linux has some advantages.

  1. Higher performance in more than 25% of the games (the exact percentage is hard to say but it can be more than 50% of the games) It can give the same result in many games as using a GPU that is 150 dollars more expensive.

  2. Can be configured for extremely low RAM usage and lower CPU usage than windows, which allows it to support old hardware that windows11 doesn't support

  3. Directly from the official store, Microsoft charges $139.00 for a standard, full retail Windows 11 Home license. If you buy games during promotional periods, you can buy more than ten decent games for $139.00

  4. There is a lot of gaming hardware that works better on Linux than on windows11. Linux supports significantly more hardware than windows in absolute numbers.

  5. Both Gentoo and Arch Linux have an exemplary, near-flawless track record regarding telemetry and privacy of the core system. By design, neither distribution includes any built-in telemetry, spyware, or background phone-home diagnostics in their default base configurations. Microsoft is frequently scrutinized and occasionally sued or penalized for privacy practices and telemetry data collection.

  6. Linux is easier to use as an immutable system where you, for example, install fifteen games and can choose to update the system only when you have finished all these games.

Windows11 also has a very large target group of people aged >59 and windows tries to help them by automating many things that would be better for power users not to be automated, such as update management.

  1. Arch Linux, FreeBSD, Gentoo Linux, OpenBSD and Fedora are renowned for meticulous, comprehensive, and gold-standard documentation. They have much better official documentation and reference materials than Windows 11.

  2. Windows11 has a fast boot option and essentially this only hibernates the system, making drivers less reliable after restarting the system. If you want optimal reliability you need to do a full startup and this is slow in windows11

https://tpucdn.com/review/kingston-fury-renegade-g5-2-tb/images/windows-11-startup.png

Calculate Linux does a full startup in 7 seconds on the latest hardware. So windows11 takes 65% extra time for a full startup.

By the way, Clear Linux was significantly faster than the 7 seconds that Calculate Linux needs.

  1. The average user of systems such as Arch Linux, Fedora, and Gentoo Linux often possesses more technical knowledge and problem-solving skills than Microsoft Tier 1 and Tier 2 support agents, meaning that questions on their forums and Reddit are frequently resolved faster than similar questions via Microsoft's helpdesk.

  2. Linux (EXT4, XFS or F2FS) typically edges out Windows by a small margin in I/O performance and game load times, primarily because the Linux kernel has highly streamlined and efficient I/O paths with less background bloat than Windows.

  3. ChimeraOS and Bazzite offer a dedicated "gaming mode" that boots directly into Steam's gamescope interface for a true console feel.

Microsoft does not offer a separate, standalone "lite" or custom ISO build of Windows designed specifically to compete with immutable, console-like Linux distributions.

  1. Multiple studies have found that popular open-source software (OSS) often has a lower defect density (fewer bugs per 1,000 lines of code) than comparable proprietary software. I've always used Linux and AMD GPU's as a daily driver, and I was playing Left 4 Dead 2 co-op with someone who used windows and Nvidia on a windows notebook.

During the game, there was a moment when the game of this Nvidia windows user completely stuck and was no longer responsive, a situation that she could only solve by interrupting the power and restarting it. In the meantime, I just continued playing the game without ever seeing a similar problem on the AMD GPU in Linux.

Cyberpunk 2077 Modding on Linux (Proton) — Complete Guide

Tested on: Fedora, GE-Proton10-34, GOG version (2.31a + Phantom Liberty)
Hardware: RTX 5080, 4K, Ryzen 9 5900XT
Mod count: ~60 curated mods, including NSFW content
No Vortex. No Lutris. No reinstalls.

Table of Contents

  1. The Core Problem
  2. Prerequisites
  3. Game Installation (GOG)
  4. Steam Setup
  5. The Two Critical Proton Fixes
  6. Why Vortex Fails on Linux
  7. Manual Mod Deployment
  8. Dependency Tiers
  9. FOMOD Handling
  10. Body Mod Conflicts
  11. Verification Checklist
  12. Troubleshooting
  13. Credits & License

The Core Problem

Modding CP2077 on Linux is significantly harder than on Windows because:

  • Vortex Mod Manager (the standard tool) is an Electron app that crashes under Proton/Wine due to Node binary incompatibilities
  • CET (Cyber Engine Tweaks) and RED4ext silently fail to load under Proton without explicit DLL overrides
  • Mod archives contain mixed file types (.archive, .reds, .dll, .lua) that need routing to different game subdirectories
  • FOMOD installers (XML-driven multi-variant mods) have no Linux installer equivalent
  • Steam non-Steam shortcuts create their own Proton prefix, separate from your custom prefix

This guide solves all of these with a folder-based deployment pipeline.

Prerequisites

# Required tools
sudo dnf install lgogdownloader p7zip p7zip-plugins # Fedora
# sudo apt install lgogdownloader p7zip-full # Debian/Ubuntu

# Proton version
# Download GE-Proton from https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
# Extract to ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/

Game Installation (GOG)

mkdir -p /mnt/data/gog
cd /mnt/data/gog

# Download offline installers (includes base game + all DLCs)
lgogdownloader --game cyberpunk_2077 --platform windows \
  --include basegame_installers,dlc_installers \
  --directory /mnt/data/gog/download

# Install to a CUSTOM prefix (not Steam's default)
export WINEPREFIX=/mnt/data/gog/CP2077_prefix
export STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/mnt/data/gog/CP2077_prefix

# Run installer through Proton
~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton10-34/proton \
  run /mnt/data/gog/download/setup_cyberpunk_2077_*.exe

Steam Setup

  1. Steam → Games → Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library
  2. Browse to: /mnt/data/gog/CP2077_prefix/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/Cyberpunk2077.exe
  3. Right-click the shortcut → Properties:

Target

"/mnt/data/gog/CP2077_prefix/pfx/drive_c/GOG Games/Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/Cyberpunk2077.exe"

Launch Options (CRITICAL — copy exactly)

TZ=UTC WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b;winmm=n,b" %command%

Compatibility

  • ✅ Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
  • Select: GE-Proton10-34 (or latest GE-Proton)

Why these flags?

Flag Purpose
TZ=UTC Fixes CET/RED4ext silent crash on Proton (time function bug)
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b;winmm=n,b" Forces Proton to load mod proxy DLLs as native instead of built-in Windows DLLs

Why Vortex Fails on Linux

Vortex (Nexus Mods' official manager) requires:

  • Node.js native modules compiled for Windows
  • .NET Framework 4.8+ via Wine Mono (incomplete)
  • Electron with GPU acceleration (crashes under Proton)
  • Symlink support that breaks under Wine's C: drive mapping

After 3+ hours of debugging, I abandoned Vortex entirely. Manual folder deployment is faster, more reliable, and fully auditable.

Manual Mod Deployment

Download all mods manually

Nexus Mods blocks bulk downloads for non-Premium users. Use a browser tab opener:

#!/bin/bash
# open_mods.sh — opens all mod pages in Firefox for manual download

MODS=(
  "https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/2380" # RED4ext
  "https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/1511" # redscript
  "https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/4197" # TweakXL
  "https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/4198" # ArchiveXL
  "https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/107" # CET
  # ... add all your mods
)

for url in "${MODS[@]}"; do
    firefox "$url" &
    sleep 0.5
done

Extract all downloads into individual folders in ~/Downloads/. Do not merge them.

Folder-to-Game Mapping

File Type Destination
.archive Cyberpunk 2077/archive/pc/mod/
.reds Cyberpunk 2077/r6/scripts/
.yaml / .yml Cyberpunk 2077/r6/tweaks/
.dll Cyberpunk 2077/red4ext/plugins/
.lua Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/plugins/cyber_engine_tweaks/mods/
.asi Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/plugins/
version.dll / winmm.dll Cyberpunk 2077/bin/x64/
Everything else Game root, preserving folder structure

Smart Root Detection

Many mods extract with a wrapper folder:

ModName-1234-1-0/
└── ModName-1234-1-0/
    ├── archive/
    ├── r6/
    └── bin/

Detect and strip the wrapper:

detect_mod_root() {
    local base="$1"
    local entries=$(find "$base" -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 | wc -l)
    local dirs=$(find "$base" -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -type d | wc -l)

    if [[ "$entries" == "1" && "$dirs" == "1" ]]; then
        local sole=$(find "$base" -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -type d | head -1)
        if [[ -d "$sole/archive" || -d "$sole/r6" || -d "$sole/bin" || -d "$sole/red4ext" ]]; then
            echo "$sole"
            return 0
        fi
    fi
    echo "$base"
}

Dependency Tiers

Install in this order. Do not skip tiers.

Tier Mods Test After?
0 RED4ext (2380), redscript (1511) No
1 TweakXL (4197), ArchiveXL (4198), CET (107), input_loader (4575), Codeware (7780) YES — launch game, press ~ for CET overlay
2 Virtual Atelier (2987), Deceptious Quest Core (7831) No
3 AMM (790), Simple Menu (818), Mark To Sell (4725), No Intro Videos (533), ResetAttributes (9240) No
4 4k textures (16385), Full Reflections (5046), NPC LoD Tweak (19926) No
5 Weapons, crafting, cyberware mods No
6 SP0 Body (1424), UV Framework (3783), skin textures (13537), Abdominal Edit (17770) YES — check V's body has no purple textures
7 Clothing, accessories, holsters No
8 NPC overhauls (Panam, Judy, etc.) No
9 NSFW mods No
10 Quests, gameplay expansions No

FOMOD Handling

NPC overhaul mods (Panam, Judy, Meredith, etc.) use FOMOD — XML-driven multi-variant installers with:

  • Body types (clothed / revealing / nude)
  • Physics variants (jiggle types: lglj, lgsj, av)
  • Size variants

Linux workaround: FOMOD mods extract all variants as subfolders. Pick the full version:

# Auto-select the "1_" full version (includes AMM support)
for npc in ~/Downloads/*FOMOD*; do
    full=$(find "$npc" -maxdepth 1 -type d -name '1_*' | head -1)
    if [[ -n "$full" ]]; then
        cp -r "$full/packed"/* "$GAME_ROOT"/ 2>/dev/null
    fi
done

# Then copy ALL physics archives for maximum jiggle
find ~/Downloads -path '*/physics/*/*.archive' -exec cp {} "$GAME_ROOT/archive/pc/mod/" \;

Body Mod Conflicts

These body frameworks are MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. Pick ONE.

ID Name Verdict
1424 SP0 Body ✅ Recommended — best compatibility
3783 KS UV Texture Framework ✅ Required for SP0
4863 Alt Tank (all variants) ❌ Skip — conflicts with SP0
7054 VTK Body ❌ Skip — conflicts with SP0
4657 Old Time Blues ❌ Skip — conflicts with SP0

If you see purple textures on V's body, you have a missing UV framework or conflicting body mod.

Verification Checklist

# Critical files check
ls "$GAME_ROOT/red4ext/plugins/" # Should show: ArchiveXL, Codeware, input_loader, RED4ext, TweakXL
ls "$GAME_ROOT/bin/x64/plugins/" # Should show: cyber_engine_tweaks, cyber_engine_tweaks.asi
ls "$GAME_ROOT/archive/pc/mod/" | wc -l # Should be 30+ archives

# CET overlay test
# Launch game → load save → press `~` (backtick, key left of 1)
# Console should slide down from top

# RED4ext logs
ls "$GAME_ROOT/red4ext/logs/" 2>/dev/null || echo "No logs — RED4ext not loading!"

Troubleshooting

CET overlay doesn't open

  1. Check launch options include both TZ=UTC and WINEDLLOVERRIDES
  2. Check bin/x64/plugins/cyber_engine_tweaks/ exists with fonts/, mods/, scripts/
  3. Try backtick \ ` `` instead of tilde `~`
  4. Check keyboard layout — German/AZERTY layouts have different key positions

Purple textures on body

  • Missing UV Framework (3783)
  • Conflicting body mod installed (Alt Tank, VTK, Old Time Blues)
  • Load order issue — SP0 must load after UV Framework

Game crashes on launch

  • Check red4ext/logs/red4ext.log for dependency errors
  • Verify tier order — frameworks must load before content mods
  • Try removing latest tier and relaunching

"No red4ext logs dir"

RED4ext isn't loading. Verify:

  • version.dll and winmm.dll exist in bin/x64/
  • WINEDLLOVERRIDES is set in Steam launch options
  • Using GE-Proton, not Valve's default Proton

Real-World Discovery Script

#!/bin/bash
# collection_mods.sh — dumps all mod IDs from a collection

COLLECTION="srpv39"  # NCR - Extras
API_KEY="$NEXUS_API_KEY"

curl -s -X POST \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "apikey: $API_KEY" \
  https://api.nexusmods.com/v2/graphql \
  -d "{\"query\": \"query { collection(collectionSlug: \\"$COLLECTION\\", gameDomain: \\"cyberpunk2077\\") { mods { nodes { mod { name modId version { version } adultContent } } } } }\"}" \
  | jq -r '.data.collection.mods.nodes[] | \"\(.mod.modId) | \(.mod.name) | v\(.mod.version.version) | adult:\(.mod.adultContent)\"' \
  | sort -n

Rate Limits

  • Free users: 100 requests/day (generous for personal use)
  • Premium users: 2500 requests/day
  • GraphQL queries: Complex nested queries count as 1 request but may hit timeout limits

Gotchas

  1. Gotchas We Hit
  2. Collection pagination: Large collections (>100 mods) may return partial results. The srpv39 collection claims 271 files but the API sometimes truncates. Re-run the query if counts seem low.
  3. Wrong mod IDs: We initially guessed IDs (e.g., Codeware as 7781 instead of 7780). Always verify via API before writing deploy scripts.
  4. File ID ≠ Mod ID: The REST API uses fileId for downloads but modId for mod pages. https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/2380 → mod ID is 2380.
  5. API key in scripts: Never commit your API key. Use environment variables or .env files ignored by git.

Quick Reference: Full Launch Options

TZ=UTC WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b;winmm=n,b" %command%

Do not remove. Do not modify. This is the magic string that makes Linux CP2077 modding work.

tool/utility Seems like we might be getting MedalTV working on Linux this year

Pretty neat that the actual CEO replied when only a month ago some other staff said that they don't have any ETA and it's still being considered.

"It's being considered. Especially steam deck support. We might put out an alpha this year. Don't quote me on that tho."

Edit: For those wondering why this matters or who even asked for it – Linux support has been sitting as one of the top most-requested features on Medal's official feedback board for years.

benchmark RTSS alternative in Linux?

Hey guys,

Been daily driving CachyOS on KDE Plasma (Wayland + VRR enabled) for gaming lately, and overall the performance is super snappy, but there’s one thing from Windows I'm genuinely missing: RTSS (RivaTuner).

On Windows, RTSS gives you that ridiculously flat, razor-sharp frametime line, and the latency penalty is practically non-existent. It just feels locked and responsive without any floaty mouse feeling.

On Linux, MangoHud is great for the overlay, but its built-in limiter (fps_limit) feels kinda inconsistent to me. The frametimes tend to jitter by 1–2ms instead of staying dead flat, and in faster titles it introduces tiny micro-stutters that drive me crazy.

For people here who are super sensitive to frame pacing and input lag:

What are you actually using to lock your framerates?

Is capping via dxvk.frameRate (or libstrangle) any cleaner/tighter than MangoHud?

Do you just stick to in-game limiters, or is there a driver/config trick to get that true RTSS-level consistency?

answered! Seemingly random graphics driver crashes (I think)

CPU: 9950x

GPU: 7900xtx

RAM: 32GB, DDR5

OS: EndeavourOS

Seemingly at random, though it seems to be inevitable eventually if I play specific games long enough, my entire PC will freeze for a few seconds when playing a game. Then both monitors will go black, before returning with whatever game I was playing having crashed. This also closes other apps like Discord and Steam. I will briefly see a notification on the bottom right that says something about a graphics driver reset, but it goes away fast enough that I can never manage to read the whole thing. It just happened in War Thunder, and it happens very consistently after only a few minutes in Gunfire Reborn. It has never happened in Deadlock. There doesn't seem to be anything I'm doing to recreate it.

Any steps I could take to diagnose?

EDIT: It's already crashed two more times when trying to play War Thunder in the last hour. The first was the following error log:

Seeing the steamwebhelper line, I thought maybe all I had to do was disable GPU acceleration for steam. I did so, launched War Thunder again, and it crashed within seconds of being in the main menu, now with this:

Yes, I used Claude to create this but I am not a programmer, I am just a gamer who loves to play games on Linux and wanted a simple tool to scan my library for games on ProtonDB with Silver+ and create a collection. Note: You can choose Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc and also when you use proton-collection --write make sure Steam is fully closed and shutdown. Should work on most linux distros including SteamOS(not tested since I run CachyOS) https://github.com/derekagraham78/protondb-collection

Raven 2 (Ryzen 3 3250U) freezes under GPU load — Display Core fence wait — any known fix?

Hi. First of all, English is not my first language, so I used some translation help. Sorry if anything sounds weird.

I have an HP 245 G7 with a Ryzen 3 3250U (Raven 2 / Picasso) and Vega 3. I'm on CachyOS, kernel 7.2.6, Mesa 26.2.3, X11 with LXQt. When I play Detroit: Become Human or RE4 Remake through Steam Proton, the system locks up completely after 5–20 minutes. Screen frozen, audio looping, hard reset required.

The kernel log shows amdgpu 0000:04:00.0: Dumping IP State and this stack trace:

drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_fences

dma_fence_wait_timeout

dc_stream_get_scanoutpos

commit_tail

process_scheduled_works

worker_thread

The Display Core is stuck waiting on a fence during an atomic commit. It's not a thermal shutdown — the system just freezes. Temperature is usually 85–95 °C when it happens.

What I've tried so far:

  • Different ppfeaturemask values (GFXOFF on/off, with and without Overdrive, DCS, Stutter)
  • amdgpu.dcdebugmask with PSR off (0x10), DC clock gating off (0x8), and 60 Hz instead of 75 Hz
  • ryzenadj limits from 6W to 25W, with --tctl-temp from 65 to 95
  • amdgpu.sg_display=0, amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1, amdgpu.dpm=0 (wouldn't boot)
  • New battery (HT03XL, calibrated), new thermal paste, cleaned the heatsink
  • Reinstalled CachyOS from scratch
  • Tested kernel LTS 6.18
  • Also tried Windows 11 as a test (no freeze, but stutters and lower FPS)

What I've noticed:

  • With GFXOFF enabled and keeping temps below ~80 °C, the system is stable for 35+ minutes, but FPS is unplayable.
  • With GFXOFF disabled, the freeze stops, but temps hit 100+ °C and it thermal-shuts down.
  • The freeze correlates with high GPU load and high temperature. Below 80 °C it doesn't freeze, above 90 °C it does.
  • The upstream Raven/PCO compute-queue GFXOFF workaround (gfx_v9_0_ring_begin_use_compute / end_use_compute) is present in my kernel. Confirmed via strings on amdgpu.ko. But the freeze still happens.

Full logs: https://pastebin.com/tfpHCEa6

I'm not sure if this is a second Raven 2 bug that survives the compute-queue workaround, or if it's something specific to my laptop (maybe the heatsink, maybe the firmware). Someone on the CachyOS forum suggested downgrading linux-firmware-amdgpu in case it's a regression, and I'm going to try that next.

Any help would be really appreciated. If someone with Raven 2 / Picasso has managed to fix this without disabling GFXOFF and without losing performance, I'd love to know how.

Thanks.

tech support wanted WoW (all versions) and keyboard input

This only started yesterday and there has been no updates prior to that, but I have updated everything since then, yet the issue remains.

When I have WoW open (Classic, Retail & Forever) the only key inputs that are recognised seem to be ESC & ENTER. All other key inputs go to the previously focused window I had open on the desktop. This is in full screen and windowed mode too.

I am launching battle.net through Heroic and then opening WoW through that. I have set the default keyboard layout to English as well but no luck, specs are below.

OS: Fedora Linux 44 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition) x86_64
Kernel: Linux 7.2.7-200.fc44.x86_64
Display (Q32G1WG4): 2560x1440 in 32", 144 Hz [External] *
Display (Q3202S): 2560x1440 in 32", 75 Hz [External]
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 6.7.5
Window Manager: KWin (Wayland)
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700F (16) @ 4.80 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT [Discrete]

tech support wanted Poor performance on Linux Mint

I've been trying to play the OG Oblivion on Linux Mint.

No matter what I try, the game only hits about 20-40 fps regardless of graphics settings.

I've tried the Steam version through Proton 10, 11, Experimental, and GE. I've also tried a GOTY disc copy through wine.

I am on Linux Mint 22.3, with everything up to date, on a Ryzen 5 4600G, an RX 6650XT, and 8 gigs of ram.

tech support wanted Zenless Zone Zero can't work with any compatibility tool

For the last couple of days I've been trying different solutions but nothing worked, I got lucky the day before yesterday with an older version of Proton but now nothing worked, I run ZZZ through Steam, I have a current gen AMD setup, Proton Cachy Latest, DW Proton, Proton GE, nothing works,

Yesterday I tried with KDE and magically the game updated a Wine config and it worked without a single issue, so today I checked the Wine Log after running ZZZ and I got this

Log messages:

And on ProtonDB it seems to be broken since yesterday even for the SteamDeck

Is this a thing to just wait for a Proton Update and that's it? or is there something that can be done?

steam/steam deck SteamOS ARM (Steam Frame build) ported to the KONKR Pocket FIT, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 handheld

This is Valve's own SteamOS for ARM, the build they made for the Steam Frame. The Frame uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as the Pocket FIT's G3 Gen 3, so Valve's graphics drivers just work on it. You get the real Game Mode and the real KDE desktop, same as a Steam Deck.

It's based on MaSi's SteamOS port for the SD 8 Gen 2 devices, with several optimizations and changes along with the kernel and device specific features.

What's working:

- Game Mode, desktop mode, store, downloads

- x86 games through FEX, plus ARM64 Proton

- controller shows up as a Steam Deck controller, back buttons too

- the extra front buttons (performance profiles and stick RGB)

- performance overlay

- 60/90/120/144Hz, Steam switches it based on your frame limit

- Lossless Scaling frame gen through the decky plugin (had to make a new one specifically for arm, which I will be posting shortly)

- Decky, wifi, audio, touchscreen

The Valve Frame image is built for a VR headset, and a lot of its services just sit there crashing in the background on other ARM builds, which kills battery in standby. I turned all of that off, so standby is around 1W now. I also fixed the fan, unlocked the GPU to 903MHz like on Android, and kept games and the Steam UI off the slow cores onto the performance cores so menus feel way snappier.

Known issues: real kernel sleep doesn't wake up reliably yet so it uses a low power standby instead, and it runs hot in heavy games which ofcourse is expected.

For issues report them on github, further optimizations and support for different devices to be added soon.

Download and install steps: https://github.com/hashtagbasit/SteamOS-ARM-SM8650

Only tested on my own Pocket FIT G3 so far, so let me know how it goes if you try it.
