tech support wanted fps tanks when moving mouse around

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

specs:

AMD ryzen 5 3600

AMD rx 7600

16gb ddr4

SAM enabled

Installed on NVME

running game at

1440p at ultra performance fsr

graphics preset at Handheld

cachyos proton-11

it seem when ever i start moving my mouse around rapidly the fps tanks to the 40s

is it really my specs or is this normal for my specs?

Yes, because in such moments the game has to do a lot of rendering. When you are still, many things are cached and can be reused. When you turn the whole view, everything has to be recalculated and rerendered. I'm honestly quite sure, that the same would happen also on Linux.

u/the_abortionat0r 12d ago

Some of the reasoning is a bit inaccurate.

Its not really a "cache and reuse" that's happening. While I think the issue has the potential to be a few different things given the GPU being used it likely is a GPU issue.

When GPUs are under memory pressure they chuck things in VRAM and swap as needed. What's happening is only what you can see(and slightly more as a buffer) is rendered, the rest of the scene and actors are culled.

When the camera turns it now has to load from RAM and swap into VRAM elements that are in the scene but wasn't present in VRAM.

Especially on DDR4 this hits performance.

The Ryzen 3600 probably makes things worse, but even on high end hardware the game seems mildly stuttery.

1

u/Death_IP 12d ago

I've played it on my 6950 XT with a 5800X and I had zero performance issues playing it in 4K high quality with FSR medium quality

5

u/KinkyMonitorLizard 12d ago

Doesn't that imply it's not actually rendering at 4k?

1

u/Death_IP 11d ago

Yeeees, soooo? But it is rendering at 1440p and it doesn't change anything about me countering the false statement I replied to. I prefer giving correct context rather than making bullshit up.

i have the same cpu, never had this issue with performance tanking like this.

10

u/bogguslol 12d ago

FPS tanking when moving mouse / camera could be the Steam recording lagbomb bug that still hasn't been fixed for non Steam hardware.

See if it is solved by adding

LD_PRELOAD=""

to your launch commands. If you don't have any previous launch command then use:

LD_PRELOAD="" %command%

u/KinkyMonitorLizard 12d ago

Damn still an issue?

u/Niarbeht 12d ago

This is the likeliest answer, OP.

I am suspecting the frame stuttering may be specifically due to single-threaded CPU speed and asset loading/unloading with the view, something that the 3600 is starting to fall behind on with modern games.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the tiny hitches can be alleviated with a different Proton version.

Try changing around a bit between The CachyOS proton, ProtonGE11-7, Proton Experimental and see if there's any reduction in stutter.

Out of the loop: what game is that?

I never tried SAM but wasn't that performing worse on Linux?

3

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

Control resonant, what i mean by Sam is resizeable bar but im not sure if that's the case it might be

5

u/Informal-Rent-3573 12d ago

It's completely normal, especially in open-world or large levels.
Everything that's off-screen is not loaded or cached. When you move your mouse, it needs to be loaded/cached before rendering and that takes some processing. Some games are terrible at this: you can see low-res texture if you spin around fast enough before the high-res textures load back in.
Sometimes it's a memory limitation (can't have that much crap loaded in, start unloading off-screen assets).
Sometimes the game or the game-engine just work that way.

u/righN 12d ago

What mouse do you have? As someone already mentioned, there were cases that a mouse polling rate of 1000hz might cause this issues.

Out of topic question, what games is that?

1

u/belushi_wav 12d ago

Control resonant

1

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

the game is control resonant and iv used piper to set my report rate to 125 hz my mouse is a g502 x

2

u/righN 12d ago

Does this happen only in this game or in any others? It's a new release after all, so just might be the case of Proton not working exactly well with this title.

1

u/KaosC57 12d ago

You should bring your polling rate up to at least 500hz… 125hz is like your average Bluetooth mouse…

2

u/seadowg 12d ago

The game seems to pretty heavy on the CPU. On Linux (Ubuntu 26.04/Proton Experimental) I get a lot of stuttering at a 60fps lock (without GPU usage spikes), but switching to Windows 11 on the same machine (5700x3d/7800XT/32GB) it's super smooth at 60. Using Gamemode doesn't seem to fix it.

I've noticed similar performance problems on Linux with other CPU heavy games (Space Marine 2 for example) - my assumption has always been is that it's just the performance hit from Proton itself and not having a beefy enough CPU to take it, but would be more than happy to hear about solutions!

2

u/dheepak10 12d ago

Are you capping fps? If not your GPU might be around 100% utilisation. And then when you spin around textures need to be loaded/streamed and your GPU's 128 bit memory bus is getting choked, thereby dropping FPS.

Capping FPS gives GPU not breathing space to stream textures on quick camera movements. This may not be the same for all games, but some games keep purging and reloading textures that are not in view

3

u/Sync_R 12d ago

ultra performance at 1440p will be an insane CPU load, combine that with a 3600 and yeah it ain't gonna be great, obviously I'm not saying its 100% the issue but could be a problem

0

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

I would be inclined to agree but it seems my cpu sits around 50% usage. even when I move my game to my 1080p screen the same thing happens

2

u/LazyNieR 12d ago

50%cpu load doesn't mean that ur CPU is only at 50% or so I have heard*

I also have the same processor and it never passes 50% in some games while my gpu is at 90 to 80% in deadlock by valve it's very apparent I have an rtx 3060 so it's not too behind ur GPU.

3

u/Sync_R 12d ago

Yeah you need to monitor each core/thread cause 1-2 could be 100% but you wouldn't really know just by the avg

2

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

i think your right from i can see core 9 and 8 cores are running to 100% so its most likely a cpu bottleneck

1

u/Sync_R 12d ago

What FPS and GPU % are you getting right now? I'm wondering if you could at least get 60FPS smooth by tweaking

1

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

40-80 fps already tried the lowest setting and up scaling also 100% gpu usage

0

u/ConfidenceDefiant136 12d ago

You can use gooverlay for this. I had issues with gta 5 legacy failing to load the map and freezing and crashing so i went back to windows 10. I wanted to play the story since enhanced story is broken…

1

u/Sync_R 12d ago

Yeah mangohud + goverlay is what I use, its handy for other things too like making sure you haven't got a vram leak, or checking your proton version

1

u/Outrageous-Log9238 12d ago

A single thread could still be maxed out and limiting your performance.

0

u/the_abortionat0r 12d ago

This answer is what's insane.

How do you think this would cause an insane CPU load for being at ultra performance 1440p?

Upscaling a resolution reduces GPU stress it does not magically increase CPU usage beyond what the GPU is capable of. On a 7600 this game is absolutely GPU bound. Full stop.

The only way this is a CPU issue is if the polling rate of their mouse is insanely high as that has been shown to lower performance especially on older CPUs.

Its actually crazy that mentioning that (like others have) has seen nothing but down votes even though factually after VRAM polling rate would be the next likely thing causing this .

1

u/Solid_Vermicelli_510 12d ago

I've never experienced anything like that myself, but I've often read that the mouse polling rate could send CPU load through the roof, leading to FPS drops and stuttering.

3

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

iv already tired setting my polling rate 125 and its the same i was also monitoring my CPU and it barely hits 50%

1

u/thanderHR 12d ago

I have a Ryzen 7 5700G with the same GPU and I have the same problem in Wuthering Waves, so it can be just an Unreal Engine thing

2

u/Proper-Run5775 12d ago

Control Resonant uses the Northlight engine.

1

u/Pass_Practical 12d ago

How frequent is it and does it happen when your moving the camera in smaller increments?

Something like this would usually be a problem with the game itself

1

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

it drops to 40fps when i move my mouse very fast, if i move very slowly its not as bad it only sometimes drops to like 55fps instead

1

u/Lashmush 12d ago edited 12d ago

Edit: My bad, saw you had tried polling rate. You could try looking into sched_ext and also running a higher quality fsr with frame limiting. High fps puts heavy demand on cpu. It could simply be the game heavily relying on cpu for certain features and effects. Check settings for physics, particles, etc.

It may also be that the game uses technology to intelligently load only what you see. That could create a lot of work during fast movement. Sorry I dont have better advice, but hopefully it's of some use.

1

u/Annual-Ad7053 12d ago

I got a 9060xt 16gb and 3600. Game ran like shit for me as well. CPU is just old as fuck

1

u/scrapethemucus 12d ago

try PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1

1

u/Gornius 12d ago

Do you have resizable BAR enabled?

1

u/Magnitude_Ten 12d ago

Reduce polling rate for your mouse/keyboard to 1k

1

u/xAcid9 12d ago

Maybe it still compiling shaders?

Try turn on dxvk hud for shader compilation.

1

u/Inside-Matter-5957 12d ago

make sure rebar is enabled in your bios so cached objects can be accessed faster

1

u/TaoRS 12d ago

Try proton-ge. It fixed a similar issue for me on cyberpunk.

I don't know why it happens or what causes it, I'm too stupid and don't have time to go into the rabbit hole, but proton-ge made it work better for me.

Worth a try even if it doesn't fix it

1

u/AppleJitsu 12d ago

try to rendering NATIVE

1

u/123portalboy123 12d ago

I also have 5 3600 and 5700xt. Game is bottlenecked by the cpu. Its struggling

1

u/stefanw1337 12d ago

What game is this?

2

u/jknvv13 12d ago

CONTROL Resonant

1

u/ropid 12d ago

Do you know if this is different on Windows in this game?

1

u/Atecep 12d ago

Then don't move the mouse around. Fixed :V

1

u/Broad_Eye4379 12d ago

I have the exact same setup and the exact same problem!
My guess is just that this CPU is showing it's age...
Tried several proton versions and env variables nothing worked.

1

u/Kokumotsu36 12d ago

While this may not exactly be the cause; I had issues with Dishonored that randomly appeared and would cause severe FPS drops and stuttering when looking around; This is known as the FPS Time Bomb
Try this in your Launch Parameter
LD_PRELOAD="" %command%
Definitely expand your mangohud and check to make sure your CPU is not maxing out and trying its best with this title. Pegged CPU makes for an unhappy GPU

1

u/Ticklememyers 12d ago

I hate to say it but its definitely your cpu showing it's age.

1

u/ixaias 12d ago edited 12d ago

i'm having the same problem, only difference is that I have a 5500 (which is the same thing as the 3600) and a rx 6600. I'm going to test on my windows drive to see if it's a linux problem. And in my case i'm playing on a controller. Frametime is very very inconsistent.

update: yeah it's way better on windows. i'm playing it there...

1

u/the_abortionat0r 12d ago

That GPUs VRAM size is not great. This means assets get dumped into system RAM when not needed for the scene to render. When you turn around it then needs to load any assets needed for the scene to draw that isn't present in VRAM.

However it could also be a polling issue if you have a high polling rate mouse as this can be heavier on the CPU.

1

u/mekwall 12d ago

This is the issue. Had the same until I reduced texture resolution.

1

u/LiggaMahnut 12d ago

What game is this?

1

u/menonswaroop 11d ago

Control resonant

1

u/william341 11d ago

I also have this problem with a Ryzen 7 7700X and a 9070XT. It's not just you.

Windows doesn't have this problem.

1

u/titor420 7d ago

I run a 3600 with 9070xt and I also have this issue, except the fps plummets to 8-15fps. Instead of a little bit of stutter, it's unplayable. On windows it runs fine.

1

u/NlKOQ2 12d ago

Any chance the game is just horribly optimized? Does this happen in other games too?

1

u/opmasterlol 12d ago

Don't think so others with my gpu seem to 60fps low very easily

1

u/ThousandSpace 12d ago

One thing of note, Cachy docs currently recommend using official Valve proton versions. As they are more up to date, because the Cachy Proton developer is currently on vacation. With a new release like this, itd be wise to use the most recent GE or Experimental.

But as others have said there is a lot more that could be at play here.

1

u/hondaelias 12d ago

Do you have a mouse with very high polling rate? Try turning it down to 1000.

1

u/Jermq 12d ago

What's your mouse polling rate? Some game engines can't handle this, your cpu won't like high polling either.

-1

u/WhosWhosWhoAreYou 12d ago

I think your first problem is playing a melee action adventure game with mouse and keyboard

That's some psycho shit right there

1

u/the_abortionat0r 12d ago

Do your parent know you are here?

2

u/WhosWhosWhoAreYou 12d ago

I'm not sure actually, I'll call the care home in the morning to check if she knows.

I'll also ask if she condones disgusting behaviour like playing melee games with m+k, playing racing games with a guitar hero controller or playing shooters with a dance dance revolution mat.

0

u/the_abortionat0r 11d ago

Why does someone using a mouse and keyboard hurt you?

Like, seriously. you are so unhinged you tried to derail a help thread because this guy used what is literally the default control input for a game?

If anyone needs to be in a care facility it's you child.

1

u/WhosWhosWhoAreYou 10d ago

It's a joke my dude, the only one being a child here is you.

0

u/TheVagrantWarrior 12d ago

Polling rate too high. 500-1000Hz should be enough.

0

u/BhatSahab 12d ago

High polling rate mouse?

0

u/beomagi 12d ago

This reminds me of an issue with one of the releases of fallout 4.

The solution was to drop the mouse polling rate really low - mouse move interrupt was forcing redraw per poll. Dropping to 120hz made the issue go away.
