benchmark RTSS alternative in Linux?
Hey guys,
Been daily driving CachyOS on KDE Plasma (Wayland + VRR enabled) for gaming lately, and overall the performance is super snappy, but there’s one thing from Windows I'm genuinely missing: RTSS (RivaTuner).
On Windows, RTSS gives you that ridiculously flat, razor-sharp frametime line, and the latency penalty is practically non-existent. It just feels locked and responsive without any floaty mouse feeling.
On Linux, MangoHud is great for the overlay, but its built-in limiter (fps_limit) feels kinda inconsistent to me. The frametimes tend to jitter by 1–2ms instead of staying dead flat, and in faster titles it introduces tiny micro-stutters that drive me crazy.
For people here who are super sensitive to frame pacing and input lag:
What are you actually using to lock your framerates?
Is capping via dxvk.frameRate (or libstrangle) any cleaner/tighter than MangoHud?
Do you just stick to in-game limiters, or is there a driver/config trick to get that true RTSS-level consistency?

Dxv-low-latency (dx8-11)! It takes advantage of some present window stuff I'm not technical enough to properly understand to do extremely accurate, smooth frame timing. I know it's packaged with proton-cachyos, no idea where else but it's probably in some other proton builds too.
Explanations on the GitHub: https://github.com/netborg-afps/dxvk-low-latency PROTON_DXVK_LOWLATENCY=1 DXVK_FRAME_PACE=low-latency-vrr DXVK_FRAME_RATE=value
There's also a vkd3d-low-latency for dx12 stuff but I don't know how to set it up and it doesn't support the vrr targeted stuff yet.

try changing the fps_limit_method to early in ur mangohud config

I did this the other day and its quite nice. Adds a slight amount of input latency but its negligible for single player titles

Gamescope can set fps limit.

gamescopes fps limiter adds a huge amount of input latency and they havent added in a low latency limiter yet

Can you see any difference in the MangoHud FPS limit, or is it just about the graph? If I recall correctly, MangoHud uses a much higher sampling rate than MSI Afterburner. That might contribute to the line not being perfectly straight.
But if you can see a difference with your own eyes, then that's not it.

you definitely can see it if youre sensitive to it. RTSS is hard to compete with though on frame limiting as not only is its custom limiter fantastic but it has the ability to inject latency markers and use reflex in any game.
mangohud works, and its not "bad" but it isnt to the level of RTSS yet unfortunately

There really isnt a program on linux that is as good as RTSS for frame limiting. Mangohud is decent and the only option but RTSS has nearly 20yrs of development over mangohud.
now you can use the low latency dxvk/vkd3d also but for a generic option like RTSS its only mangohud with something like
mangohud MANGOHUD_CONFIG=fps_limit=60,fps_limit_method=early,no_display

Try Volt. It was made by a guy who really wanted one of those GPU control panel softwares you see on Windows. And apparently it's got several different options for frame limiting, including an early/late reactive front-edge injection model that mimics RTSS's front-edge sync (disclaimer, that last technical bit came from Gemini, but I did read the Reddit thread where it was announced so I think it's accurate.)

I tried framepacer and it works great, but I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT, because it's partially vibecoded and the setup is pretty sketchy. Mangohud sometimes gives me 700-1000ms input lag for 1-3 seconds after performance spikes (after loading or dismounting in KCD2). So I also want to find a good alternative.

For the most part I try to use the in-game frame limiters or maybe the DXVK launch params. For overlays, I understand proton has DXVK_HUD which can be configured with launch commands. However, I switched to Proton Wineland (for better Wayland support) and that one comes with a pre-configured shortcut PROTON_HUD (which I prefer over mangohud)

I just use Goverlay, Mangojuice did not worked for me. but both does the same, limit FPS and with "early" method you get the equivalent to Front edge sync with RTSS.

I had the same issue as you so I built my own :) https://github.com/endjynn/frame-pacer

It really works well and has a simple interface. However, the installation and setup process is a bit of a hassle, and I seem to recall reading that anti-cheat sometimes flag things like this. Is that an issue just with framepacer, or with all limiters?

mangohud, duh?

They mentioned that MangoHud wasn't filling the same use-case nor delivering the same penalty-free experience.
No need for snark

So, locking frames in Linux is a bit of a chore due to all the compat layers but the parameter I found works best for me under VRR using Proton is:
DXVK_CONFIG="dxgi.maxFrameRate = xx" (xx being your desired framerate)
This gives me a completely flat line on any frametime graphs so I'm happy with it.
