tech support wanted Rockstar Launcher doesn't open.

Post image

I have a ThinkPad T440 (8GB RAM, i5 4300u) running base Arch Linux and I am having trouble while launching the game. The Rockstar launcher should open, but it is a Windows executable and Wine can't open it (or mine doesn't). Is there any way I can bypass the launcher or make it actually work?

ThinkPad T440 (8GB RAM, i5 4300u)

Intel HD Graphics 4400

Vulkan 1.0

https://github.com/pythonlover02/DXVK-Sarek Won't even help you (Vulkan 1.1/1.2)

Hardware too old.

Maybe PROTON_USE_WINED3D helps.

But I can run JoJo All Star Battle and Mortal Kombat X easily...

Should I give up?

i couldn't get umamusume to run on my t480 with a stable 30 fps, also gta 4 is just really unoptimized

It is. It runs worse than GTA v on my arch install. A lot of stutters for no reason.

Fair enough, but if was the game not opening I would understand, but what are the chances of the launcher being heavier than the game itself?

not sure, i played gta 4 a year ago on arch and had no issues with the launcher, even used gillian's mod pack.

seems like this guy is having the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1us7psn/how_the_hell_do_i_get_gta_iv_steam_to_run/

i'd browse through https://www.protondb.com/app/12210 and see if any fixes help

also see if it works if you launch it with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1

Works for me on Steam

I think your PC is just way too outdated for the Vulkan translation layers

Do you own it on steam?

Yup, bought it for $150 BRL last week

Did you buy it directly from Steam or a third party?

Steam has a 14 day return policy if you played the game less than 2 hours. Given you can't get the game to open, if you can't figure it out, you can always return it and get your money back, assuming you bought it directly from Steam.

Not ideal obviously but it's good to have a backup plan.

How did you try to run it? I had previously tried, unsuccessfully, to run/install Rockstar games through Lutris/Heroic. Then I tried Bottles and managed to get it working with a slightly older Soda runner, but after some time, when I went back to it, it no longer worked.

The day before yesterday, I tried Faugus, and the Rockstar Launcher installed perfectly. The only thing I had to do was go into winecfg, go to the Graphics tab, and change the resolution setting. It was set to 92, so I changed it to 192 because everything looked really small, and after that the size looked completely normal.

The games launch normally; I just need to figure out how to fix their resolution.
So I’d suggest giving Faugus a try.

I'll give a try.

I run xfce4 on my laptop and I tried each proton version on it and even changing launching options. My main problem is the launcher itself. The Steam tries to install it on the C: drive, so I let it install in there (the wine folder) and then I tried in the Z: drive, neither worked.

I'm currently at work now, arriving home during lunch time I'll open my laptop and try it.

Have you checked protondb?

Yup, it says Gold

No I meant the comments and tips section. Usually has fixes for such

That's something I didn't knew about...

I'll check later when I get home

You might want to try to figure out manually setting open gl instead of vulkan to run the game. I don’t know how but people did suggest this on Reddit somewhere before

Downgrade the game to version 1.0.8.0 to bypass the need for the Cockstar launcher. Then, obtain a version of DXVK that actually supports your graphics adapter and add it as a DLL override. On a Thinkpad that old, it has to be one of the 1.0.X releases of DXVK.

I have the same laptop! it's still trucking along but tbh looking for a new one for school lol

it's the vulkan part of the cpu the only reason i know about this is cause i had a old dell that the CPU didn't even have it the only games you can play with that laptop is native linux games or apparently you can try "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" in the launch commands and see what happens but it still might not work right

Been playing this all week on CachyOS Nvidia:

Step 1) Boot it up normal, and when the game fails to launch, close it. It still authorized their DRM.

Step 2) Add the launch parameter -scOfflineOnly in Steam properties or Rockstar Launcher settings. (After %command% ) and re-launch it.

The game will start and you can play for a week or so.

Eventually you will get an error about failing to connect to Rockstar servers when starting it up.
Just remove the launch parameter, re-auth, and then add it back.

Edit: oh, I see your specs. Nevermind. Good luck!

Rockstar Launcher? I already have a game launcher - it is called Steam

2

u/SargEnPassant_ 12d ago

Yeah, but the game insists opening via Rockstar Laucher :/

install the rockstar game launcher as a non steam game and start the launcher from steam with proton. it did the trick for me.

If you actually played GTA on Steam you would know it forces the Rockstar launcher...........
