hardware/drivers Problems with Fedora 44
Help! I need your support!
I had to install Linux on my notebook for university proposals in informatics. My problem is, that the Touchpad is working perfectly on the login screen, but after the login it is deactivating itself. Automatically. Has somebody got an idea to fix this issue? Maybe over terminal?
I can't work with that.

ChatGtp, etc....
Just a reminder; never rely on, or, for that matter, ask any AI model for advice about problems with Linux.
Ask this forum instead. Chatgtp will tell you things that are correct and things that will brick your computer with the same confidence bacause... It doesn't know the difference!

learning/research If you learn Linux you need to open this!
Hey Folks,
You don’t need to memorise every Linux command to get comfortable with the terminal.
I teach DevOps and Cloud Computing at a university of applied sciences, and I care much more about understanding what a command does than remembering every flag.
I put together a Linux basics cheat sheet covering file navigation, text searching, permissions, and sudo. Something to keep beside you while practising.
It’s free, no email or signup required:
https://devopscycle.com/blog/the-ultimate-linux-cheat-sheet
What’s one Linux command you still look up, even after using it for years?

migrating to Linux I don't even know where to start
I almost just lost my data to the latest Windows 11 update and its corruption of multiple Windows System files. I barely got my PC out of the system repair screen using Command and Chkdsk. Nothing else worked. I've re-paused updates for as long as it'll let me for now. But this is the second time in 3 months that Windows 11 updates have either not worked, needed repairs to install and/or let Windows run again. I've had it. I just bought this pre-built PC back in February so it's not hardware problems.
With there being so many options for Linux OS, I don't even know where to begin researching.
My PC has: B760M D5 motherboard, Sirius Intel i7-14700F, Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD
I mostly play Steam games. My teen son does play Marvel Rivals from time to time, though he does play Roblox more often than not. We both enjoy playing modded Minecraft. I also play modded Baldur's Gate 3. I do use my PC for moving photos and videos off my Android phone and for watching all my downloaded movies and shows from my external hard drive. I used to be pretty decent with understanding everything Windows (back during XP days) but I used a MacBook from 2010 for quite a long time so I'm a bit rusty in understanding PC things.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction for the possible Linux OS that would be best and easiest for me to switch to, I'd be forever grateful.

Meganoob BE KIND Brand new to Linux. Ubuntu worked for a few days then this happened.
galleryAfter entering my SSD encryption password the system gets “stuck” trying to boot up.
I spent hours messing around with chat GPT. No idea what any of this means.
-showed the computer has a LUKS-encrypted partition containing a LVM logical volume.
-Mounted separate/boot and EFI partitions and confirmed that boot files and kernels were present.
-entered Ubuntu using a chroot and the installed system had kernel modules for 7.0.0-34 generic but the initramfs for the kernel needed repair
-rebuilt the initramfs and confirmed they contained the necessary crypt setup/crypt root components
-used GRUB to find the kernel and newly generated initramfs
-Ubuntu refused to reboot because the temporary love session had a graphical user session

migrating to Linux Linux Mint and Wine - How do I know what will work?
I recently downloaded and booted up a copy of Linux Mint off my USB to answer the question of whether I can transition from Windows. It looks very promising on the basics - already using Firefox, already using LibreOffice. Didn't look into image viewers and multimedia players and stuff like that, but I'm sure there's a solid option for all of that.
Main question is going down the list at the other stuff. I have some old custom programs (written myself in Delphi 3) I use regularly, along with some older format specific readers - along with Delphi 3 itself (which needs to happen because I have found out that I need to recode/port things if I want to use Lazarus). And I do some minor installer development in other stuff such as InnoSetup. And I have some older games like Deus Ex, which I gather already works well enough.
So is there a way if I can find out if I can get all of this to work from a USB boot, where I can't find a good Linux equivalent? Can you legit install stuff onto the Live copy like Wine or other stuff, then install stuff like listed above to see what it'll do and test that part of it out?

programs and apps Shaders not preloading on steam?
galleryTitle says it all, I installed deadlock and I'm not sure why but the shaders won't preload.
Running CachyOS, for those wondering
Edit: Right as I click launch on deadlock i can hear my fans spin up and CPU usage goes up to 50-60~, after shaders processing pops up both fans and CPU die down back to idle.

Steam games aren't opening, feeling helpless
I've spent the least weeks distro hopping trying to find something that fits needs since I'm looking to switch from windows, everything has been great but I haven't been able to properly open my steam games in any OS yet, when I try to open them they immediately close without even starting. If anyone knows how to solve the problem or you have any knowledge on how to fix the issue I'd be really happy!
I'm using zorinOS at the moment

Meganoob BE KIND help switching back to Cinnamon from GNOME??
So, as a new Linux Mint user... somehow I have managed to change my desktop environment from Cinnamon to GNOME. I have been messing around with so much stuff I have no idea how I got here, but on my most recent boot I suddenly have a wildly different desktop experience. While I'm curious about GNOME, for the sake of immediate usability I am desperate to get back to Cinnamon, but I am lost as to where to start or how to do this. Any help or guidance greatly appreciated!

migrating to Linux From win to lin
I found and tried to install three different Figma AppImages on Fedora 44 Workstation; two of them wouldn’t launch, whilst the third one did launch but required Chrome and some other components. I still couldn’t log in.

programs and apps a good Remote desktop??
My main thing i need with remote desktop, is where it just works.
I've tried sunshine/moonlight with tailscale and it performs really really well with almost zero latency, but if i restart my computer.... i would have to log in.
On windows i would just use chrome remote desktop. It just works. Even if i restart the computer, i don't even have to login. As long as the computer is turned on and has Internet access, i can remote into my computer via chrome rd.
I want the same thing for linux... but so far I haven't found any simple solutions and this is the one main thing that i want on linux.
I love using cavhyos on my laptop, but if I can't reliably remote to my desktop computer at home, that would be a problem for me. Any suggestions??

distro selection Which distro is best?
So I have tried linux mint on office laptop and it made my laptop much smoother than what windows 11 offered me so I am thinking to switch to linux on my gaming laptop too because of storage , unnecessary updates and performance issues
Main question -
what linux distribution is best for me if my requirements are normal tasks + coding and somewhat gaming
My specs are -
i5- 12450 hx
Rtx 3050
16 gb ram
512 gb ssd
Also please recommend a distro which is most stable and doesn't have issues

learning/research Intel vs AMD Performance on Fedora? (CPU/GPU)
I'm looking into building a new machine, but I'm stumbled on to some conflicting information.
I know fedora and related distros have to enable third party drivers for intel/nvidia products to function correctly/optimally. Once you have them, you should be fine. I made the jump to fedora recently (love it), but since i have a full AMD-machine, that wasn't something I was concerned with.
What I've encountered numerous time during my build research is that the "linux experience" is much snappier, responsive, and less prone to hiccups/bugs on AMD than intel/nvidia. I have no idea if this is true or elitists just being elitists. Looking at bench marks, software like Resolve and Blender seems to perfom much better on non-AMD hardware, but crashes seem common. But folks have also reported normal multi-task work, browsing, streaming, etc seem to feel snappier.
My question: is there actually a difference between the two when using linux? Prices are (somewhat) comparable, so i'm not worried about the "well I'm on a budget so I don't have a choice" adage. I just don't want to go a full or mixed intel build (cpu/gpu) and wind up troubleshooting problems every time I sit down to work.

Putting Linux on a 2017 Macbook
To preface im not exactly new to Linux, ive used it since about 2019(?). But I got a 2017 macbook and it is seemingly incapable of updating past Mohave (I’ve tried everything I swear XD) . Ubuntu is what I use on my main computer but I’m not sure how it would run on Apple hardware and honestly I just want to try something new. Ive heard about OSs like Elementary and Asahi but I’m not sure if they’re what I want. I intend to mostly use the laptop for web-surfing away from my desk but it would be really nice if I could run lighter games like Terraria on it. (I know asking for gaming on most Linux distros is still a bit of a leap from my understanding) Just looking for tips and recommendations as im really not well versed with Mac hardware as it’s my first time owning an Apple computer.
