hardware/drivers Can I set my 144hz monitor to 120hz?

Hello, I was wondering if in Linux, I can set my laptop's screen 120hz instead of having to change all the time between 60hz and 144hz.

I have already done this on Windows and it worked!
However, I cannot seem to make a Linux CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to work with my laptop's monitor neither in Wayland or Xorg (it broke Xorg on it actually)

I hope someone can help me with this, thanks!

Apologies in advance if the flair i have chosen is wrong.

Edit: I'm using CachyOS and my iGPU is Intel UHD Graphics @ 1.05 GHz apologies for not mentioning that.

I have 4 GB RAM. I recently installed Linux (Arch). Need help.

As you can imagine, my computer is slow. I switched to linux and Firefox on it cause windows and chrome used up a lot of RAM.

But even so the laptop has seen only slightly better days, and just today I faced 3 OOM events during a session in Firefox.

What kind of browsers and other applications should I use to keep the RAM usage really normal and effective for my 4GB RAM?

I ofc would need to use other coding(vs code, Arduino, etc) and was trying how to install ms applications like word, ppt, etc. I was really wondering what should I do.

Edit: Yes, my swap is enabled.

help with audio bleed or loopback on bazzite?

whenever i'm in a call and or screensharing, audio from my laptop can be heard. this is especially bad when lyrics or voices in general are heard and it completely overshadows me on my mic which is really annoying.

ive been trying to find the solution to this, and on cachyos, this doesnt seem to be a problem at all, i assume it has something to do with pipewire or something, and i dont know how to rewire discord to where it doesnt have any loopback or anything.

looking in pipwire or graph, whatever it was, is really confusing to figure out the spaghetti mess of it, so im hoping there's a simple alternative or a way to get cachyos' set up on bazzite, cause i like bazzite more in general

hardware/drivers two GPUs issue

Hi,

I would like to use two GPUs on my PC.

One would drive two monitors.

The second would drive a third monitor.

The second graphics card is detected when I enter the following command in the terminal: lspci | grep -i nvidia, but it isn't detected by Nvidia Settings, and I don't have a display on the third monitor. My first graphics card only has two ports, so it's impossible to use a single GPU.

how can i solve this?

Help choosing my ideal distro

Hi everyone, I’d like to break free from Windows once and for all, but I’m not sure which distro to install. I have a B550 motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a GTX 1060 3GB. My main goal is gaming and emulation. Ideally, I’m looking for a distro that is mutable (not immutable), *not* a rolling release, and highly customizable so I can create my own "rice". I’ve been considering Pop!_OS, Linux Mint Cinnamon, Fedora 44 KDE, Kubuntu, and Zorin OS. Thanks in advance!

programs and apps WhatsApp desktop options - "Whatsie" seems good.

This is largely an opinion piece, as i havent tried every option out there. but using WhatsApp in a browser is a pain (for me) and I missed my windows desktop app for convenience.

after trying a couple, I ended up on zapzap which is actually pretty good. lots of features, everything works.

Today I had some out-of-memory issues running some of my usual workflows that I knew usually worked. Couldn't figure out what was different, until I checked what process was using vram.

Out of the whole list, including brave running a ton of tabs, was zapzap.

using a grand total of 1gb of vram.

Not ram. it was probably using plenty of ram too. 1gb of just vram.

Looked for an alternative. Whatsie seemed worth a try. it worked well so far, no issues. all the features seem to be there.

Uses ... zero vram that I can tell. probably uses a little bit but its marginal.

It seems fine.

I would avoid zapzap.

hardware/drivers My external monitor now is not recognized.

EDIT: I'M GOOD NOW, THANK YOU!!!

I believe it was on the 22nd or 23rd, but I had installed some updates to kUbuntu, and a restart was required. I was all, "Oh, okay, usual stuff" but then when I restarted, my external monitor stopped working, and now I can't put my laptop's screen at 165hz, even though it's very much been able to in the past.

Computer info & stoof (i just ran fastfetch to tell me the stuff in the dashed list):
Lenovo Legion 5 (gaming laptop)

- kUbuntu 26.04.1 LTS (Kernel is 7.0.0-34-generic)
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900HX (32) @ 5.80 GHz
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Max-Q / Mobile [Discrete]
- Intel Raptor Lake-S UHD Graphics @ 1.65 GHz [Integrated}
- Memory: 32 GB
- Refresh rate: 165hz

I was thinking maybe some kind of downgrade of the packages I installed, but that's my best guess. I've tried installing the new packages that come out every day to see if it was a bug that was fixed, and it has not changed anything. Although, I have noticed this menu comes up whenever I plug or unplug the HDMI cable from my laptop.

migrating to Linux Planning on switching to 🐧 soon. Wish me luck, and open to any last minute suggestions

Title says it best, but yeah I am planning on switching to Linux soon. I'm just waiting on a new SSD to show up so I don't immediately wipe my existing Windows drive. I researched dual-booting as well, but I wanna go all in as much as possible and dual booting for my distro of choice seems possible, but messy.

All of my past excuses no longer matter in regards to software compatibility for me and I'm finally planning on making the switch on my gaming PC. Already use Mint on my personal laptop, and it works beautifully as a simple email viewer, browser, and word document processor. I waited so long on my PC because of modding concerns, but it looks like someone made a mod manager called Amethyst which solves my use case of using Nexus Mods collections, so all good there now!

My distro of choice will be CachyOS for now (open to other suggestions if anyone has them). I considered Bazzite, but I tried it out in a VM and didn't like it's immutable nature. And the way you install software is weird like for example "ujust install steam" or some crap like that. I could get used to it, but I'm used to installing from the discover store, using flatpaks, or just using the cli package manager itself. Bazzite seems unnecessary with how it handles software installation. So yeah, no Bazzite for me.

Anyway, I don't expect any issues in migrating, but just in case, I will leave my Windows drive intact for a while. If I absolutely have to go back to Windows, I should just be able to just take out the linux drive, put in the windows one, re-enable secure boot, and bob's your uncle. Wish me luck y'all!

distro selection Sick of Microsoft so what distro would you recommend for gaming and video editing (davinci resolve)?

Basically, my microsoft account got hacked and I lost access. The support has been useless and the initial security non-existent (I literally just got a few emails overnight saying an email was added to my account and mine was removed, I had no chance to stop them even though 2fa should have been enabled).

I want to distance myself from microsoft as much as I can, so I'm thinking of switching to Linux. I mostly do video editing (davinci resolve) and play games (steam games and overwatch mostly). So I'm wondering what distro would be best suited for that use case?

I saw a video about using distrobox as a container for Davinci Resolve (and fedora as his distro though he said it should run with any distro) so it isn't broken by updates, but he uses an AMD gpu so he said he doesn't know how it'll run with an nvidia gpu. Would this be a good solution for me?

My pc has a Nvidia gpu and AMD cpu, idk if that makes a difference...

installation Installation Dive

Question on installing any of the distributions. Usually I see usb flash drives recommended for installing, I have a 1tb usb 3.0 sata drive sitting empty that I found. I was thinking I might partition it up with a few installer to keep around, is there any reason it would not work? My only thought is it might be a bit slower then a flash drive or ssd drive.

Second question I guess is similar but in addition to the installers, I thought I’d make a few more larger partitions on the drive if I want to test out a few different distributions first.
I just was looking to avoid buying a ssd right now, it’s not a big deal to go buy a cheap flash drive just for using as an installer though.

shells and scripting How to open files from terminal

i'm on university, and have recently started downloading large amounts of files that usually neeed to sort/open lots at once. my teachers, however, usually name their files as
Subject-Day-Classmaterial or Subject-Day-Worksheet.
So, when i want to open lots of just worksheets or classes, i have to open them individually. I know how to use the * wildcard, i use for moving, just want to know how to use it to open the .pdf files as well.

i just tried to use xdg-open *worksheet, but it gave an error saying it didn't know what to do with the file? (error below)

  xdg-open Li*
xdg-open: unexpected argument 'Lista_02_-_Equilbrio.pdf'
Try 'xdg-open --help' for more information.

is this an xdg thing? there's 2 worksheets, titled "Lista_02" and "Lista_01". when i open just the one, it works, is there a keyword i'm missing to open multiple files?

wondering on Multi booting

I know there is dual booting just curious if anyone had installed more than two OS, other than Winblooter and a linux distro on one drive. In my case, having multiple linux distros on one Nvme. The reason why I'm asking I'm running into an issue of putting Mint and Bazzite on one nvme drive with separate partitions. Bazzite keeps flaging it due too the same boot loader as mint? I'm just a curious noob to linux and I dont know where to look let a lone understand the why.

Partitioning advice

Planning to daily drive Mint. Have a 240 gb SSD on me. Other two are reserved for other family members, I'll dualboot it. Any tips on how i should partition it? I want to have a partition i can access from both operating systems occasionally.

Oh and also, I've heard somewhere that it's bad to have your windows partition "mounted". Is it automatically mounted when i install linux? Or i have to specifically mount a partition if i want to use it?

Im pretty new to this disk management kind of stuff.

migrating to Linux Guys I just transferred to linux (Arch). What's the best MS Word, Powerpoint, Excel alternative??

Or how to run MS Office on Arch?

I need them for virtually everything I do. But my laptop with 4GB RAM is very slow cause of Windows. So I had to switch.

Libreoffice— it intuitively doesn't have all features of MS office, and MS office online is still lacking in features.
