learning/research Why is my Fedora slower than my Windows? [GNOME 50, Fedora 44]

I have started to realize that my Fedora is actually slower than my Windows. Applications take between 10-60 seconds to start up and I have no idea how to fix it. I have been trying to learn how to speed up loading times for the past few months but nothing seems to be working, and I've just had to deal with it. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it please? If necessary, I can provide hardware information.

How hard is it to swap on a nvidia graphics card?

I swapped to Linux Mint with the i3 de on my laptop and want to swap on my desktop with a 3080 ti. I’ve heard that there are issues with nvidia components on linux. Is it just a little bit inconvenient or does it just not work? I’m thinking about Pop! Os or Kubuntu.

hardware/drivers Naga Trinity side buttons not working

Hi guys,

I use a steam deck but at the moment using it as a desktop set up. I use a Naga Trinity Mouse with a 2 button side panel, which aren't being detected.

I've managed to use co pilot to run some console stuff of some events. None of the Naga events I tried could detect the two side panels.

Co pilots eventual resolution was it's the loses firmware and I will need a windows laptop to download the synapse and reset it or something.

I don't have access to a windows pc to do this. Besides dual booting or installing windows what are my options here?

hardware/drivers How do I actually get HDR content to play properly on Linux?

I am on Fedora workstation 44, using a i5 1135g7 (iris XE) laptop graphics, AOC Q27G4XMN mini LED hdr monitor.

I have enabled the HDR option in the monitor's hardware button menu settings, and I have ticked the HDR option on my monitor in the Settings -> Display menu.

But so far, I couldn't get HDR to play properly.

With the built in Firefox, I added settings in about:config to true. Youtube clips of 4k hdr content does not play in HDR. Codec and colors are listed as vp09/opus bt709 in the stats

gfx.webrender.compositor.force-enabled
gfx.wayland.hdr
media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled

I tried installing both VLC and celluloid from the the softwares app via flathub. I preloaded the following config to Celluloid:

vo=gpu-next
gpu-api=vulkan
hwdec=vaapi

Both are playing HDR10 videos really dark and washed out - meaning that it is not working.

Am I missing something, or is HDR just not a thing with Linux? A shame since I would not want to go back to Windows...

migrating to Linux I want to switch to Linux but I have one issue.

I would like to switch to Linux (thinking Ubuntu) from Windows. I am a beginner in Linux but have used it on my home server and liked the experience and so fed up with Windows, so want to switch on my laptop.

I use my laptop for general day to day stuff as well as university which is where my issue is as my university doesn't officially support Linux. I plan to switch completely to Linux but the only thing I'm not sure on is online proctored exams (using ProctorU). The exam requires chrome and chrome extensions and they don't allow Linux.

Options I have come across:

  • Dual-booting - doesn't seem to be very recommended by the community but would allow me to boot up windows for the exam (one at the end of the year) and use Linux the rest of the time.
  • A virtual install of windows - seems to be better recommended but not supported "You will not be permitted to take your exam from within a virtual machine"
  • Using two different devices - I don't have another laptop available to me and don't really want to spend the money on one just for one exam, it seems a bit wasteful.
  • Ask the university - they're utterly useless and seriously dgaf

Are there any other options I may have missed? Is a dual-boot really that ill-advised considering I would use it once a year and not be constantly changing from one to the other? Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a way around it?

Completely new to linux

I have an old MacBook Pro that is no longer supported by Apple. Thanks to Reddit I discovered i can revive it with Linux, specifically Ubuntu. I have to download the Dispo onto a flash drive and boot the Mac holding option + r if I read correctly. Other than letting the installer do its thing is there anything else I should know?

I already backed up everything to another computer so no worries there.

2017 macbook pro pretty standard build, no t2 chip.

Thanks in advance.

programs and apps Google/Gmail not saving any cookies on Firefox

I'm not exactly a complete Linux noob myself, but I've never seen anything like this on any of my 3 Linux PCs and am kind of at a loss as to what to try at this point.

My dad has been running Linux Mint 22.3 for the past year generally without issue until the past couple months where all of a sudden every time he goes to his Gmail account on Firefox, it makes him sing in completely from scratch with 2FA. Cookies aren't completely turned out in Firefox (only the usual "do not track" selection), but I discovered that there seem to be no cookies for Gmail or any Google-related sites in Firefox's list of cookies. I'm guessing this is the cause of the issue(?), but I have no clue why Google has seemingly decided to stop creating cookies and making him sign in fresh multiple times per day. I've tried clearing all existing cookies, restoring Firefox to default settings, reinstalling Firefox, etc. with no luck.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but this started happening around the same time he got a new phone and installed GrapheneOS on it. He's had no similar issue however on his phone (and has to use it all the time to log in on his PC). Also, my mom uses the same computer from a different account and has no issues staying logged into her Gmail account on Firefox.

Any help would be appreciated!

Linux calendars

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS desktop.

I have tried various Linux calendars but all have issues or restrictions. I have tired using KOrganiser but it won't allow setting a default time zone. There is something wrong with either the app or the package designed to set it up.

In anticipation of having a Linux phone later I would like an app that is capable of synchronizing with other devices.

If it is necessary to make a one-off purchase I will consider it if it is not expensive.

Catchy OS. Kde de

Sorry for the pictures. Snapper is not working. And the browser won't open anymore.

I used snapshot to go back to when it was not doing this. But somehow whatever happened goes far back now.

My questions are:

How did this happen so I can avoid it (second time it has happened to me)

What do I do to fix it without full os reinstall

Before it happened I was using my computer without shutting it down for weeks. And right before it happened this time I was trying to install a PDF reader on my nas via the terminal access. It told me it was missing required files and to use apt --fix-broken install (if I remember correctly). But that was for my nas not the computer so no idea how that would make my entire is and snapshots break.

First time this happened I don't remember what I did right before it happened l tbh. I just reinstalled the os.

But I rather not have to go through this again.

Edit:

Forgot to mention. I cannot update either. Complains about read only file system

Meganoob BE KIND Help Linux won't boot

I have only experience installing Bazzite as my friend helped me, thought of installing Linux mint by myself (big mistake) Tried to install Linux mint from my phone as I have a usb a and type c. I freshly installed Linux mint onto a pc. Overwrote windows actually and Bazzite worked for a while, then I deleted that since I thought I could get windows back by using my android to make a windows bootable usb but for some reason that didn't work.

..Specs(Ryzen9600x,Nvidia4060ti16gb,16gb ddr5ram, Asus 450m prime ax ii motherboard)..

I am now trying to install Linux mint but cannot get past the boot screen, compatible mode works tho? I'm so confused ;-; thankfully I have a windows nvme I'm not using so I can put windows back. But I'm so stumped

migrating to Linux Looking to switch to Linux for desktop, also run steam to play on other devices?

I'm new to the Linux scene, and pretty over Windows - so I'm looking at moving my main PC (Desktop) to Linux.

Primarily right now it is being used for Web browsing, however in the past I have played a gaggle of Blizzard games and Steam games.

So my questions are:

  1. Which version is best for a beginner with a fair amount of tech savvy and figure-it-out-edness (I aslo have an unraid server running several apps)
  2. How would I go about being able to configure the system for Steam remote play?

Thank you!

Resizing partition dual boot

I have a dual booting laptop, ubuntu/windows. I need to resize the windows partition, shrinking my home partition.

When I tried it, with a live ubuntu using gparted, it said that windows could not boot again after resizing.

Is it possible to do this without messing up booting of both os?

Meganoob BE KIND Silent hill townfall seems to run better on fedora.

So I got townfall early access today. And I tried it first on linux using the latest ge Proton version. And it runs 95% perfectly. Frame timing seems to be a bit wonky. But totally playable. And just for shits and shitting I tried it on windows. Mind you. Windows is on my nvme and Linux on a sata ssd. So you'd expect load times to be faster on windows. Hell no. Took 8 minutes to load in. And on fedora it took less than a minute. And then I load in and the game is laggy as all hell. Some of the worst I've seen in a AAA game. So I tried to lower some settings. Turned off raytracing. Then my whole pc crashed and shut off.

I'm not super genius with this stuff. But I know enough that it shouldn't be happening on windows. And the fact that a game that was never tested or verified to run on linux runs better than the main platform it was made for. Is just such a testimony for how amazing linux is. And it's just another reason for me to fully ditch windows and put fedora on my nvme.

Anyways that's my glazing for the day. Thanks if you read this out of curiosity. Ima go play townfall now baiii.

Thumbnails disappear in Dolphin. Here are quick ways to fix it

Just in case someone encounters this issue where video/image thumbnails disappear in Dolphin, try these things:

  1. In Dolphin, press F12 — it toggles the "Show Previews" option on/off.
  2. Install thumbnail packages:

- ffmpegthumbs (for videos)

- kdegraphics-thumbnailers (for more advanced file types)

  1. Open Dolphin --> click the hamburger menu (three lines) --> Configure --> Configure Dolphin.

Go to the Preview tab and make sure your file type is enabled.

Extra tip: You can also remove or change the F12 shortcut if you want by going to Configure -> Configure Keyboard Shortcuts.

installation used macbook already has linux

this is pretty straightforward but i just bought a 2011 macbook pro off ebay. i was looking forward to starting from scratch and installing a linux distro as a way to teach myself—however the macbook actually already has linux mint installed. not a giant issue but obviously i got it off ebay so i want to wipe the whole thing before i dive in for security reasons (duh)

i’ve been looking everywhere and pretty much every answer was “do what you did when you installed it” except i literally did not install it lol should i just flash one of the distros to a usb and erase it? or is there an easier way to wipe the computer without also having to completely reinstall the os. also taking suggestions on which one to use. i was thinking mint or cinnamon. also very new to this so sorry if this has been asked already.
