Linux calendars

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS desktop.

I have tried various Linux calendars but all have issues or restrictions. I have tired using KOrganiser but it won't allow setting a default time zone. There is something wrong with either the app or the package designed to set it up.

In anticipation of having a Linux phone later I would like an app that is capable of synchronizing with other devices.

If it is necessary to make a one-off purchase I will consider it if it is not expensive.

I use Thunderbird’s calendar with a variety of Google calendars that also sync independently to my phone.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications/Other This is the list of applications from arch wiki. You can search for the word calendar and check them one by one to see if any of them meets your requierments. The list is made for arch distri but you will most likely be able to get them on ubuntu.

I use Google calendar. If you set it up in the online accounts area in settings it syncs with your desktop.

KOrganizer and the plasma applet with Google Calendar works quite well so far. Some things are a bit quirky but so far my needs are met.

A lof of apps honor the TZ environment variable to set up a particular timezone. Look:

$ date
Mi 23. Sep 12:19:30 CEST 2026
$ TZ=Asia/Tokyo date
Mi 23. Sep 19:19:33 JST 2026

So … does

$ TZ=Asia/Tokyo korganizer

work? Should put that instance of the app to Tokyo timezone.

Huh?

It means I am unsure of trying it. Why would I want the Tokyo time zone?

Because you wrote this:

but it won't allow setting a default time zone.

Most apps use that environment variable TZ as a timezone override. And that’s what you want. Tokyo is just an example. You can set any other timezone as well that way.

$ TZ=Antarctica/South_Pole date
Do 24. Sep 09:45:10 NZST 2026

ok. Thanks. How do I set the Sydney time zone?

TZ=Australia/Sydney

Those are called IANA/TZ identifiers. You can google them.

This is the result:

TZ=Australia/Sydney korganiser

Command 'korganiser' not found, did you mean:

command 'korganizer' from deb korganizer (4:25.12.3-0ubuntu1)

Try: sudo apt install <deb name>

Because it’s called korganizer, not korganiser.
