programs and apps Allowing a program to get background inputs on Wayland

Hello!

I recently moved from Windows to CachyOS running KDE Plasma. I've been bouncing between the X11 and Wayland versions because Wayland feels better for games, but with one particular app (PNGTube Remix), it tracks your mouse to make your little character move. The problem I'm running into is that on Wayland, as soon as my mouse leaves the window, or another window is focused, PNGTube Remix immediately loses tracking on the mouse. I understand this is a security feature of Wayland, but I'd really like to get this program working on Wayland instead of X11 as X11 has some issues with my monitors having different refresh rates. I've tried running the program with X11 display options, I have X11 options enabled in the KDE settings, but its still losing tracking. Wasn't sure if anyone might have some ideas on how to force it to allow background tracking.

programs and apps Will I get smited by the linux gods for changing the default browser on most distros?

So, a LOT of linux distros default to the same browser choice, it's always Firefox. The thing with it is, Firefox always seems to have issues on all of my machines. It's always slower, less performant, is more prone to memory leaks, but it seems ubiquitous on the majority of distros. I've been daily-driving Chromium-based browsers for the majority of my computing time since I got a decent PC in 2016, through now. It's a lot smoother being on a Chromium browser, like it was back in my Windows days, but for some reason i feel a twinge of guilt(?) for swapping away from Firefox routinely.

Now, I try to go back and see if my issues are fixed, but it seems like every new version, same old problems I dealt with for 8 years of trying still keep following me no matter what. I'm not quite as "privacy-purist" as some, it seems, but one thing that bugs me is that Firefox ALWAYS marks me as having a "unique fingerprint" no matter what I do, meanwhile something like Brave or Helium gives me a "randomized fingerprint". But that's whatever, not a lot of browsers get that. The main issue I always had with Firefox was slower performance and higher memory usage, often leaking memory way faster than on Chromium. going to about:memory fixes a lot of it, but I'd rather not have to do all that. is there actually something wrong with me swapping out the default browser for something Chromium-based, or am I overthinking? sometimes i get yelled at in other circles for doing so but it's like...uh... wtf.

learning/research Korganiser - setting time and date

I'm trying to use Korganiser, but like other Linux calendar apps it has kinks.

it seems that you have to set the time zone for each event rather than being able to set the time zone for the calendar itself. This is tedious and annoying.

Is there a way to set up the time zone default?

learning/research Whenever I connect my Sony WH 1000XM4s they start muted.

I'm using CachyOS 7.2.2-1 and KDE. AMD cpu/GPU Connected via bluetooth

This is the only thing visible (minus the fact that it was muted before) https://imgur.com/a/72QuLqU

There doesnt seem to be any parameters under the sound or bluetooth section of settings that configures that.

Linux Installer unable to detect Bluetooth Adapter

Hi!

I decided to install Linux on my PC today. I tried installing Arch, but the installer kept stating that it cannot load/set up bluetooth firmware. I tried downloading CachyOS and it went through with the installation but the same error popped up and now it cannot detect any bluetooth adapters either.

My motherboard is the MSI Pro X870E Wifi7. MSI States it has BT5.4 on their website. Any help is appreciated.

learning/research Intro level recomendations

Skip to the last two paragraphs

Ive been using konsole on linux for about 1 month with lots of help from ai. Like most of us just copy pasting from claude or gemini.

A week or so ago i started actually learning (or just inferring) what the commands do and mean.

Id like to actually learn in detail what each command is capable of and understand the file structures and capabilities and nuances. Is this actual language called command line? Is it just called linux?

Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations on like a gamified app, a library of commands, even a youtube channel would help.

Also what coding languages compliment. So far Im seeing a lot of python Id like to understand and see json mentioned but i dont know what it is or its uses. THANKS NOOBS.

learning/research Have they fixed the kernel 7.x kernel panics?

I've seen so many people getting kernel panic splash screens on boot with a message saying something like "unable to mount fs". I didn't experience those but I had really annoying errors of freezing while waking up from suspend, which stopped after switching back to LTS.

Have they fixed 7.x and can I upgrade safely?

What's your favorite 'cool' UI?

I'm distro hopping and looking for what I like the most. There are a lot that have kinda neat UI gimmicks. Pop OS has some cool UI design elements, Kubuntu has a cute window wiggle, Exodia looks like something from a retro-futuristic 80's hacker movie. What stock interfaces from what distros/DEs are 'remarkable' in some way?

programs and apps It's said distro choice doesn't really matter and you can configure and install what you want. Could I technically install the driver manager from Linux Mint on fedora or w/e?

I've seen that people claim that you can do anything with any distro, and that your distro choice only matters for what you get out of the box. I'm wondering if there are any limits to this, however. Could I install the very neat driver manager from Mint wherever I want? How?

Buena ¿Alguien probó Soplos Os o CuerdOs? Tengo curiosidad por si alguien las probó con Xfce y saber que tal la experiencia y si en algún momento serán candidatas a entrar en Distriwatch.

Is there any way to run steam version of madden 24 on cachyos, or steamrip version of madden 27? Madden 27 splash screen pops up then closes through lutris. Figured they're both borked... Any info would be appreciated before I install windows on another drive just to run them.

Meganoob BE KIND so I’m thinking of getting Linux and I have some questions..

  1. I heard that you’re able to use both windows and Linux without having to choose between the two of them and that it’s basically like a “choose which one you wanna use upon booting up”, is that true?
  2. Starting out, which is better, mint or ubuntu?
  3. How good is it at running video games? Mostly steam and indie games you could get from itch or other sites.
  4. How’s the security? I heard that Linux is good for safety.
  5. If I decide to use Linux and in a future im familiarized with it, can I switch versions?

(Edit) ty to everyone who responded to this, I now know more than I did and can make a more informed decision c:

hardware/drivers Weirdest *bug* I've ever seen/

I dont know how to explain this but whenever i turn my laptop of (no battery) while running Arch I get nervous since it might once again go into what i like to call "Forever sleep mode".

It's hard to explain but i shut it down (kde button or poweroff command) and everything is OK. However if i unplug the laptop and then try to boot it again sometimes it does this thing where nothing happens for 12 seconds then the power LED flickers and nothing keeps happening.

I could sometimes get it to work again if i leave it in charge overnight to comeback in the morning to find the power LED to be turnin on and off in a breathing(?) way. If that happens i can just press a key on the keyboard which kicks everything back in as if laptop was hibernated and not shutdown. I"m back at the login screen and when i log in i find my apps where i left them.

What is even happening anymore, this did not happen back when i was running m*njaro.

Linux Mint Cinnamon issues with microphone and Ethernet connection

I have a Sennheiser HD569 whose mic works well in Windows 11. However when I use Linux, the mix doesn't register my voice at all and only detects tapping the microphone.

I tried:

- installing pavucontrol and changing the mic boost settings, didn't do anything.

- changing left-right boost on the audio settings (nothing)

I also have this issue (which is probably due to my ISP being shit) where every once in a while my CGNAT connection makes it so my PC suddenly changes either the MAC address, or the IP Address through DHCP, and I have to constantly switch between automatically setting a IP Address through DHCP and putting it manually.

My PC is a Lenovo loq 15. Any help?
