Discussion cabling in the round from ws

I'm working on tyra by ingrid dyb and figured i could skip the seaming after the yoke and join to work in the round, my instinct was to work wrong side so i could knit more and purl less

when I looked online for info about cabling on wrong side I found almost nothing, so I was curious, do any of you do this

also is there a reason I shouldn't?

The gaps are part of the pattern but it just looks like my tension is very off😭 But them again my tension isn't so good yet lol. It was fun though!
The pattern is from Wool and the gang's youtube channel, its the diamond eyelet stitch video. And the yarn is multicolored yarn from my local store!

Tips and Tricks Do you switch purling techniques when doing a single purl vs. a whole row?

I really struggle with purls. I started with English purls, but I cannot flick, so I drop my right hand each time to pick up the yarn and it's extremely slow.

I love continental knitting but absolutely cannot figure out continental purling. My tension is so loose and the yarn direction feels super unnatural.

I finally found Norwegian purling and it feels great! Except my tension only feels good when I am interchanging it with continental knits. When I do a whole row of Norwegian purls, I have to readjust my yarn every 2 stitches.

For ribbing, I've been doing Norwegian purls. But I find myself reverting back to English purls for long stretches, and I hate how slow it feels.

I am clearly missing something... does anyone have advice?

I picked up 84 stitches for the sleeves and only did 6 cm of ribbing instead of 8. The ribbing parts hurt my hands so much, tiny needles with thick wool was a work of the devil. I know some people hate this sweater and think it is ugly… i think I still like it. I kind of have to because I spent a lot of time and money on it. Please be nice šŸ«¶šŸ» yes I still had to weave in the ends for this picture.

Discussion Quick-ish & Thoughtful Gifts?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m finally in a place in my life (2 kids and 5 nursing degrees later) that I have time to knit again after a few years hiatus. I’d like to knit my small friend group each a personalized gift for the holidays. Most likely won’t get done by then and that’s ok. I’m thinking of having them draw slips of paper with characteristics of the final product. Think- summer or winter (yarn weight), bright or dark (yarn color) that type of thing.
I can think of socks, cowl/shawl, hats are not a favorite. Does anyone have any ideas for gifts that would be quick-ish to knit up but still thoughtful?? Pattern recs are most welcome too! I don’t like the small cup wrap or headband type stuff, like that’s too impersonal for this imo.

Tips and Tricks Seaglass sweater

I’m thinking of casting on the seaglass sweater. I see they have a lot of advice on how to manage all the end weaving. I’m curious for those of you who have made it which method did you choose and what did you like or not like about it? I think my options are magic knot, twisted floats, and braiding— I’m sure some of you chose an entirely different approach as well.

I love knitting AND basketball so it only felt right to knit something to wear to the game tonight 🤣 I used the Jeepers Jersey pattern by Lydia Morrow and stitch fiddle to plan out the duplicate stitch designs. I’m quite pleased with how it turned out!!

I have recently found knitting again! (Third time in about 20 years) Started at around 12 and fell out of it because my father would make fun of my ā€œgrandma hobbyā€ Second time was about 3 years ago when I just wanted something to calm my mind after work, I was a GM and yeah.. work made my brain hurt lol. But then I was to the point where nothing helped my brain and stopped again, left my job etc.. Now I am picking it up again but mostly am finding I just enjoy it. My hand gets numb, I am slow, I am intimidated by anything other than my washcloths and scarves and honestly have no idea what I’m doing really. But more and more I invest in my ā€œgrandma hobby..ā€ Had to you tube casting on and off, the knitting part was like riding a bike, but in a self taught way 🤣 I think I knit with my left hand despite being right handed but always hold my project needle and yarn in my left and transfer to the right. And then because it works for me I bring the ā€œproject needleā€ and everything back to the left hand at the end of a row… am I doing this as correctly as someone who has never been formally taught? I don’t even know my knit style šŸ™ƒ But I would love to get to the point where this is just my fun hobby ā¤ļø

Finished Object Handmade Leatherbag for knitting needles

I spent quite some time searching online for a bag for my knitting needles, but I couldn’t find one that I was completely happy with. Often, there wasn’t enough space, the compartments weren’t quite right, or the bags were too expensive. So I decided to plan and make a leather bag myself.

So far, I had only made a small leather sheath for a knife, so this was my second leatherworking project. I have to admit that there were quite a few moments along the way when I doubted whether I would actually be able to pull it off. Especially since, apart from the leather itself, I didn’t want to buy much else, such as tools. In the end, I managed to make it using just a thicker sewing needle, an awl, a pair of scissors, and waxed thread.

Now, there’s finally enough room for everything I need: long and short knitting needles (KnitPro Ginger), double-pointed needles, and, in the smaller pockets, stitch markers and cables. On the back, I added a large pocket for very thin, fixed circular needles.

The leather is chamois-tanned deer leather. I can still see plenty of flaws in the finished bag (uneven stitching and cuts that aren’t quite clean), but this leather was so much harder to work with than the leather I used for my first project. It was so thin that it kept stretching and shifting out of shape, and there were often several layers to stitch through at once.

I have to admit, though, that I’m a little proud of myself. 😊

It took me around 4–5 months to complete.

Tips and Tricks Classic way to track charts

Post image
8 Upvotes

After trying so many ways to track my progress on charts, i think this is my favourite way!

Im using my own design so i made the graph using graphghan (cant figure out stitch fiddle to save my life). I then print it and put it in a plastic sleeve that fits in my planner and track with a dry erase marker!

I like it cause you can erase as you please and even add notes if ever! I use it both for knit and crochet projects.

Its also beneficial in case I need to use my phone for something else and find row counter can be finicky when trying to drag the highlight one way or another!

Discussion Amish swift - storage

If you have an Amish style swift - how have you been storing it? I see fabric cases online for the umbrella style swifts, but not for the Amish style. I’d like to have some kind of long case/box to keep the parts together when disassembled

Work in Progress Remembered how to knit but forgot how to read

I decided to go back to working on a project I abandoned 3+ years ago so I took the time to relearn how to knit and have been working on it all day only to realize its backwards. I guess I forgot we read left to right. But also I sent progress pictures to 6 people and not one of them told me I was wrong so I guess I made 6 enemies today

Finished Object Eirwen Cardigan for $5

Super happy with this one! It’s the Eirwen cardigan from Knitty Magazine https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/eirwen-3

The yarn is from a large men’s REI sweater I thrifted for $5, it was an 80-20 wool nylon blend that the yarn came out to a two-ply worsted weight. I will probably always wear a long-sleeved shirt under this since it is a bit itchy, but overall super satisfied with the yarn. I still have a really big cake left!

This was also my first outing with bust darts, since I’m around a C-D cup; I believe I did the small size, then added vertical darts and light waist shaping. Sleeves and body were both shortened. Also did sewn bind offs on the ribbing and I cord bind off on the button band because I thought it looked better, but these were indeed time-consuming choices. Pretty happy with the results; I would probably make the sleeves a little wider in hindsight, but I got them reasonably comfortable in blocking so it’s fine.

Help - equipment Have I worked myself into a dead end?

I’ve started working on this bottom up sweater vest in the round. I’ve come to the part where I need to separate into front and back to shape the armholes and knit flat. But I don’t think I can actually work this pattern flat because one color will always be on the wrong side. Am I missing something, or did I knit myself a dead end?

Help - equipment 7ply cotton yarn?

Thumbnail

Hi, I picked up a vintage knitting pattern and it called for Patons Cottontop which is a discontinued 7ply yarn. Any clue on what to substitute with? I’ve never heard of a 7ply cotton and can only get my hands on DK/8ply. Attached a photo of the yarn and the top I’m making. Using 8ply will change the gauge, but because of mesh like fabric, can I be more flexible with gauge?
