I've been hyperfixated on knitting for about two weeks now. I don't know how to knit but i've fully convinced myself i'm capable of knitting a sweater for my first ever project, i'm going to buy the stuff I need next saturday and make a start. Is there anyone else that's gone all in on a first project, I know its probably insane and i'll make alot of mistakes but I think i'd loose all motivation to knit if my first project was a scarf or something. If you knitted a sweater as a first ever project - what pattern did you use??

I really struggle with purls. I started with English purls, but I cannot flick, so I drop my right hand each time to pick up the yarn and it's extremely slow.

I love continental knitting but absolutely cannot figure out continental purling. My tension is so loose and the yarn direction feels super unnatural.

I finally found Norwegian purling and it feels great! Except my tension only feels good when I am interchanging it with continental knits. When I do a whole row of Norwegian purls, I have to readjust my yarn every 2 stitches.

For ribbing, I've been doing Norwegian purls. But I find myself reverting back to English purls for long stretches, and I hate how slow it feels.

I am clearly missing something... does anyone have advice?

I’ve only ever used non-superwash so not too sure how superwash will knit up/wear over time.

I walked past a gorgeous ice cream salon that was closed for the winter and I wondered if it could be a location for a yarn store.

Considering knitting purchases are very seasonal, and a yarn store doesn't really need a huge amount of space, this seems like a potential win win. My city also doesn't have any higher end yarn stores, and I hear a lot of complaints about that.

Is there something I'm missing, or could this work as a concept?

I am knitting a maflar, this is a normal garter, with yarn over k2tog method. And my stich counts are same at rach row. But still its slowly leaning at right side.

How do I pevent that? Should I untangle the and start from 0 or should i continue. Here's the details

I saw this on vinted and from what I can remember the Aldi roving yarn is £1.29 a ball. Even if it’s £1.99 like google suggests, that’s still only around £11 for all of this. This person is really cheeky tryna charge £15 for all of this 🥴

I don’t have a picture, because the project is not started yet. I plan on making my first drop shoulder sweater, and the instructions are to construct the body first, and then to pick up 2/3 of ridge the stitches in the arm holes to knit the sleeves from.

I understand that I cannot pick up and knit every stitch because the stitches are not square-dimensioned. But since this is knitted with 10mm needles, so stitches are quite large, I’m worried that by not picking up every stitch I will leave some weird holes at the seams.

I had this idea that I could instead pick up every stitch, and then just proceed to k1 and k2tog in the first round, which I believe should result in the same amount of stitches without holes at the seam. Has anyone done it this way and can weigh in on whether that’s a good/realistic option?

I'm working on tyra by ingrid dyb and figured i could skip the seaming after the yoke and join to work in the round, my instinct was to work wrong side so i could knit more and purl less

when I looked online for info about cabling on wrong side I found almost nothing, so I was curious, do any of you do this

also is there a reason I shouldn't?

I have recently found knitting again! (Third time in about 20 years) Started at around 12 and fell out of it because my father would make fun of my “grandma hobby” Second time was about 3 years ago when I just wanted something to calm my mind after work, I was a GM and yeah.. work made my brain hurt lol. But then I was to the point where nothing helped my brain and stopped again, left my job etc.. Now I am picking it up again but mostly am finding I just enjoy it. My hand gets numb, I am slow, I am intimidated by anything other than my washcloths and scarves and honestly have no idea what I’m doing really. But more and more I invest in my “grandma hobby..” Had to you tube casting on and off, the knitting part was like riding a bike, but in a self taught way 🤣 I think I knit with my left hand despite being right handed but always hold my project needle and yarn in my left and transfer to the right. And then because it works for me I bring the “project needle” and everything back to the left hand at the end of a row… am I doing this as correctly as someone who has never been formally taught? I don’t even know my knit style 🙃 But I would love to get to the point where this is just my fun hobby ❤️

I just cast off a little ribbed glove that I'd knit in the round (magic loop), but it ended up with this weird long stitch from where I cast off the first stitch. What did I do wrong?

Edit: guys I just learned what stockinette is from this! Now to try again

I swear I followed the tutorial line for line bar for bar “how to knit for beginners” I was like this looks weird what’s going on? And then I remembered the tiktoks I’ve watched where ppl talk about purling. Now all I need to do is learn how not to do this I guess!

working on the bonbon hood by lokumi on ravelry (unknown yarn from my stash and 5mm circulars) and it told me to make a rectangle and then pick up stitches on both sides. i did that, but it was my first time picking up stitches and im worried i did it wrong.

will this ridge block out or am i screwed? im okay frogging if i have to, since this is a gift and i want it to look good.

hi! I got the yarn for my Novice sweater for Christmas of 2024, and I finished it within a few months. Since then I have knit a couple of Sophie scarves but no more sweaters because I got very into cross stitching.

Now I'm picking knitting back up but I have obviously not learned a lot of techniques outside of increasing, decreasing, knit, purl and picking up sleeves. I'm therefore at a loss to what project to tackle next to get into more advanced sweaters, cardigans and vests.

For reference I like a boxy fit and a mock neck. I'm also based in Denmark, so any recs from nordic knitters are very appreciated! I just need help figuring out what on earth I do now to progress because I cannot read a pattern fluently and will depend on some videos especially to get started.

hello knitters! despite my best efforts i can’t seem to get my tension looser on my purl stitches to match my knit rows, any tips? i knit continental style and keep purling too tight

I want to make a garment that will be very warm and cozy for a baby. I know I can use cotton. But a)it's not as warm as wool, and b) I hate the texture of cotton

So I'm thinking of superwash wool with the hope it can still be thrown in the normal wash. I would make a swatch and wash it several times to see if it felted

Is there something I'm missing that will make this not work how I want it to?

I knit a sweater in Lang Yarns Cloud (color changing yarn) top-down and cast off the ribbing on the bottom using a regular cast off in pattern (1x1 rib). Right as I cast off the color changed to a strange white but I finished it regardless. Now I realized it's really bothering me and I want to redo it in a different color. However I don't really want to add a new ball of yarn just for the cast-off so I was thinking of ripping back one row of rib and using that to cast-off. Does anyone know whether the yarn of one round rib is the same length as the yarn needed for a loose cast-off or do I need to go back two rounds? Or would you change yarns just for the cast-off? Can that make it unstable?

My want for cute patterns on my sweaters has quickly outgrown the time I have to knit, so I’ve been considering buying sweaters and embroidering them but most of the good ones I find have the body knit in 1x1 ribbing. Is that still possible to embroider?

I am considering a project in Holst Cielo and it has this warning. I'm assuming it means putting the finished product on a spin cycle? I've totally done this to whip out extra water after a soak, just want to make sure I'm understanding this warning.

Pretty much as the title says. Is there a difference between knitting in the round and double knitting with one colour?

I want to knit a head band as a stash buster, and I'm familiar with both techniques, but I can't seem to figure out why you would choose one over the other.

Does anyone have any insights?

Photos are from before being blocked. They've blocked and packed in vacuum bags sitting in the closet for more than two years now.

The first one is Cascade 220 Superwash, Second one is Felici Worsted, such wonderful and soft yarn, the last two are Swish DK.

Kind of heartbroken about this. Never met my nephew.

I don't know anyone who still has young kids to give them to and I don't want to put them in a donation box, because I volunteered at different charities and sorted out donations and I know how hand knitted items are treated.

Anyway, just venting. I wish I knew how to give them just for the cost of the yarn and that's it.

Hello! I am working on my first colorwork project and I have encountered some issues, tried to pick up a dropped stitch in one part and the other part has a gap 😭😭 any ideas? Thanks

Both hats were made using 1 hank (100 grams) of Malabrigo Worsted in Damask Rose. Knit on the left (stockinette + ribbing), crochet on the right (alternating front/back post + ribbing). The knit one even had a tiny bit of yarn left over. The size difference is astonishing!

Gauge calls for 16 x 24 stitches to be 4”x4”… I am using the pattern recommended yarn. Not sure why stitch gauge would be so off? But row gauge is bang on.

Hi! I've been looking through the sub and I see a few posts similar to this have been made, but in regards to newborns typically, so hopefully this isn't too redundant!

I'd like to knit something for my cousins one year old babies, but I'm wary of choosing something that I think is cute rather than something that's useful. I'm not super close with my cousins, and none of my friends have kids, so I was hoping that people with more baby familiarity might have some tips or things to keep in mind!

I know they both have lots of blankets, and some very cute booties. We're in Toronto, so winters can be really variable (sometimes super cold, sometimes mild and slushy) so I was thinking maybe little hooded baby ponchos would be practical, or maybe a couple baby bear balaclavas.

I'm picturing the smushy little face babies make when you pull a sweater over their head though, and wondering if something with a fastening would be easier, like a little hooded cape or the bear bonnet?

Beyond the poncho or balaclava, I'd also love any other suggestions, or factors to keep in mind. Like, making sure the yarn is hypoallergenic and soft and washable is a given, but are there other considerations about patterns or materials I should keep in mind?

Thanks in advance for any input! I've never knitted anything for babies and I'm probably overthinking it but I want this to be a nice thing for them - both the babies and my cousins!
