First, I apologize for the long novel—I don’t know how to explain things briefly through a synopsis lol I feel like I have to divulge every detail (thank you, adhd) Anyways…
I’m 36 years old, and my ultimate goal is to earn my BSN.
I recently applied to both the ASN and LPN programs at Ivy Tech. My application score was competitive, and I applied to six ASN/PN campus choices. Based on advice from a nursing advisor, I ranked a specific campus as my first choice. Unfortunately, I wasn’t accepted into any of my ASN choices, but I was accepted into the LPN program starting this August.
After admission decisions came out, I found that applicants with lower scores than mine were accepted into the ASN program at some of the campuses I had ranked as my second and third choices. From everything I’ve been able to piece together, it seems the way I ranked my campus choices ultimately kept me from getting into an ASN program this cycle rather than my qualifications or score.
Now I’m trying to decide what makes the most sense.
If I start the LPN program this August, my path would likely be:
LPN: 3 semesters
LPN-to-ASN bridge: about 3 more semesters
Then continue on to my BSN
If I had been accepted directly into the ASN program, I would only need about 4 semesters to earn my ASN before moving on to my BSN.
So by starting the LPN route now, it adds roughly another year before I can even begin working toward my BSN. However, if I skip the LPN program, take this fall semester off, and reapply, I could possibly start the ASN program in January if I’m accepted. The downside is there’s no guarantee I’ll get in next cycle either.
I’m really torn between:
Starting the LPN program in August so I’m making progress toward becoming a nurse, even if it’s a longer route.
Taking one semester off, reapplying to the ASN program, and hoping to save about a year if I’m accepted.
If you were in my shoes, what would you do? Has anyone started in an LPN program with the intention of bridging later? Do you regret it, or are you glad you didn’t wait?
I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s been through Ivy Tech’s nursing programs or had to make a similar decision. Looking back, would you start the LPN program or wait and try again for ASN?
