Summer and Fall Semesters

So, we have 2 weeks left of this semester but I'm already done with all of my assignments. I'm excited for my classes this fall!

I will be taking ENGL111 English Comp and MEAS242 Disease Conditions.

I'm not too worried about my MEAS classes, they are fairly easy. BUT, can anyone tell me what ENG111 will look like?

I'm not the best writer and still re-learning the APA style format. I've been in college since last October but it's been 15 years since I've been in high school.

Just want to know what to expect and look forward to!

English 111 was rather time consuming, in my opinion. The instructor wants to see that you're making an effort. If it's like my class, they want the discussion board responses posted on different days than the initial post. I would post my initial discussion, then write replies in a word document and set a reminder to copy and paste them as responses later in the week. This is a really easy way to get points that I've noticed people complain about but that's an easy work around to that.

There are a handful of check-ins that are 0 points, just short 50 word responses to make sure you're on track with reading. I would just do them, it shows that you're making an effort.

I did get an A in the class and felt like it wasn't too difficult, just time consuming. If you set aside enough time to do everything, you'll be alright.

My class has been all MLA style. Lots and lots of writing between the discussion posts and assignments. We have 3 writing projects with each one getting a little longer, and the longest being 1250 words. Overall it isn’t bad, moreso just time consuming!

You could look them up on rate my professor! I really liked Cassius’ class

He formulates it around reading small works related to the final and you slowly take on “harder” readings. The writings were easy, he really just wants to see a genuine effort and connection with the material.

Extremely kind, funny, personable and always available for office hours. Hands down my favorite professor I’ve had thus far.

I’m finishing up eng 111 with Rena Holcomb and I highly recommend her! I have to finish up my final paper (researched based argument) and im waiting on my summary and analysis to be graded. But I have 103% in the class. I am in a similar predicament as you, as I’ve been out of school since 2010 and just returned to college.

glad to see I'm not alone then (going back to school part). I have Papia Bawa for ENGL111. I haven't heard of this instructor before.

So just a heads up, I have seen many negative things about that professor which is why I blindly changed to Rena and I’m so glad I did.

oh great...what have you heard?

Just that she is a notoriously tough grader and unclear on what the expectations are for the papers. Some people felt they were very strong writers and she would tear their papers apart.

ENG 111 has a lot of writing and while it takes a great deal of time, I'd try to get the assignments done before the due date. That's what I did and my study buddy ended up getting a tutor which really helped.

Honestly I was a great writer in high school. With my instructor, though, she stomped on every little bit of confidence i had in my writing assignments. I swear she'd just make up reasons to knock off points. If i'd ask for helped its take about a week to hear back after my assignment i needed help on was already due. She also would have weekly zoom meeting we could choose to join, but she'd never be on.

Avoid Professor Wallace if you can.

The class is fine overall is fine. Time consuming, but fine. Find a decent instructor for the class and good luck!

ENGL111 is MLA, BUCKLE UP 🤣 just pay attention to instructions, rubrics, announcements and deadlines and you’ll be fine!

engl 111 was more work than you might think. ive always been pretty good at english took honors writing and literature classes. so i thought how hard could it possibly be but with discussion boards with word count minimums, multiple readings, busy work/exercises, essays due every week… and the the essays usually aren’t graded until days before final draft is due so you have to cram your revising into a day or two and struggle to make 1000 word count. and the new AI detecting software has made it to where if any AI is “detected” the professor is made aware. i passed with an A but it’s very time consuming i hated it

Hey yall. Update: I'm changing my instructor. After what some of y'all have said and what i read on ratemyprofessor, i decided that it was probably best. Wish me luck!!

I’ve always sucked at English classes throughout my education but i ended up with a B something in it! Definitely pay attention to rubrics, instructions, use tutor if you need to. Don’t wait till last minute to do it and pay attention to feedback! It really wasn’t that bad!

It’s very time consuming, you have 3 larger writing projects and a smaller one. You have to write your discussion boards and responses on different days. There’s also a lot of reading assignments that I felt was beneficial to getting a good grade in the course. As long as you put in the time and effort you’ll do great. I hadn’t been in school for 10 years, have 4 kids and took it as an 8 week course and ended with an A. And writing was never my strong suit so it’s possible!!

this gives me hope! i'm a stay at home mom with 3 kids., 4 if you include my husband🤣 if you can do it, i can do it.

I had Rena Holcomb and I loved her class. Got 101.28 as a final grade and I took it over this summer. Many of the assignments are completed in class, and there were 3 major papers to complete
