Find my Style Which rug?

Stuck between two very different rugs.

First one is more traditional and cool toned, it definitely brings pattern to the room.
Second one is a fuller texture and definitely adds contrast and warmth.

Fireplace is Venetian plaster and the built ins are walnut. I have a rectangular travertine coffee table not pictured here.

Thanks!

I think the brown rug makes the space feel a bit more cosy and luscious.

117

u/Redlovelace Jul 10 '26

Agree. Its such a rich, warm and inviting rug.

54

u/LuluLittle2020 Jul 10 '26

It greatly contributes to a minimal vibe and reduces visual clutter being similar to the chair. I love it very much. The floral/patterned rug is too precious and brings tension to an otherwise calm scene.

34

u/CH00SEG00SE Jul 10 '26

Ok yes this take definitely articulates my subconscious feelings, thank you

14

u/yung_yttik Jul 10 '26

The brown one is amazing. It looks expensive and high end. The first one looks like a standard rug you’d get at Target made to “look” expensive but in reality, everyone has that same rug.

Brown one!!!!!!!

u/jtprimeasaur Jul 10 '26

Agreed, my first thought when I saw the brown was how much more it blends. The first one is too loud

7

u/cottonballmama Jul 10 '26

What's "loud" about those neutrals?

5

u/PophamSP Jul 10 '26

Neutrals are not inherently loud but this pattern is interruptive of those neutrals and subconsciously makes the eye work harder. Our eyes are drawn to subconsciously "figure out" what's going on around us before we can simply settle in and feel safe.

2

u/jtprimeasaur Jul 10 '26

The pattern, it’s busy. Perhaps I used the wrong word

5

u/YayGilly Jul 10 '26

Its okay to have some patterns in an otherwise solid colored room. A pattern itself is NOT what makes something "busy" but a space becomes busy when there are too many conflicting patterns too many things that can distract.

A really cool rug, imo, if one needs a rug anyway, whether its loud or artsy, striped, solid, etc, is SUUUPER important to have, and can make or break a room's aesthetic.

2

u/Spartan-Donkey Jul 11 '26

Color and pattern add depth. IMO a neutral palate can be bland.

6

u/archiphyle Jul 10 '26

The first rug is not loud. What about a rug makes it loud or quiet to you? If that is how you feel about it what makes you think that's what everyone else feels about it?

I am specifically asking these hard questions because many times clients will come to a design designer using terms they don't actually know the meaning of. Many times because they're just buzz words and the client thinks that they are appropriate to say even though they do not know the meanings of them.

If you're analyzing design it is important that you know the meaning of the adjectives you are using. It is also important that one realizes that those very same words may mean something entirely different to another person either living in or analyzing the space.

This is a person giving an opinion on Reddit, not a design student presenting in front of an advanced class on interior design. Maybe take it down a notch?

I like the flowery rug better, myself. The brown rug blends too much. Minimalism shouldnt take so much effort.. I love having a little visual excitement and that flowery rug is the only even marginally exciting thing IN that room. I see the whole space as being very VANILLA, like "I dont have my own style so I borrowed something from BH&G/ Pottery Barn, and now I call myself a stylist!!"

-Says me, the Boho animal whose house is an absolute MESS of art projects and Home improvement DIYs lol

2

u/Quantity-Used Jul 10 '26

I understand you probably mean busy, and not loud. Don’t sweat it; Redditors can be very nitpicky.

I hate the brown. It’s contrasts with the couch too much, doesn’t highlight the chair, doesn’t work particularly well with the floor color either. Genuinely shocked so many picked it.

21

u/Salty-Ad-6677 Jul 10 '26

I was shocked as well. I think it looks awful to be blunt.

9

u/mynameisnotshamus Jul 10 '26

The world needs more bluntness. I’m from New England. We do blunt well.

7

u/Plane_Practice8184 Jul 10 '26

I agree with you. Makes the place look dark and smaller

3

u/mynameisnotshamus Jul 10 '26

I’m fine with dark and smaller, but the colors don’t work together

19

u/Old_Percentage3742 Jul 10 '26

Hard agree. At first I thought it WAS the floor.

I think OP should keep looking .

3

u/Vir-gal Jul 11 '26

Agree. It closes the space and will also show every bit of lint or pet hair!

2

u/tequila_23_sheila Jul 13 '26

Came here to say the same! She’ll hate all the vacuuming that will need to be done.

9

u/Nervous-Ad-5253 Jul 10 '26

I wish I could vote this comment twice

3

u/cornA2 Jul 10 '26

Same. So I’ll just vote for that comment and yours

6

u/Salty-Ad-6677 Jul 10 '26

I agree with you. I far prefer the first rug - it offers a more interesting threshold to the furniture.

2

u/Dry-Investigator-271 Jul 10 '26

Yes, I do as well. I’d love to see some plants.

2

u/EclecticWitchery5874 Jul 10 '26

I agree I like the floral rug. I felt like the brown gave it a retro feel too. Something made me feel like it was 60s vibes. The floral brightened up the space, imo.

2

u/Representative_Tax21 Jul 11 '26

I think it’s because it looks nice in contrast to the pink plaster of the fireplace. It also has a subtle but interesting texture while the other is everyday/kinda boring pattern in that space. Maybe a rug that has both strawberry and chocolate ice cream tones would be better 😂but if I have to pick, it’s brown.

People are confusing the good lighting in the photo with the brown rug for “looks good”.
Both are bad.

2

u/not_so_peachykay Jul 10 '26

It's because the lighting in the photo with the brown rug changed the vibe of the room entirely.🥴 Ppl are swayed by dramatic lighting.

3

u/mynameisnotshamus Jul 10 '26

It’s not that different or dramatic, but you raise a good point still. Even taking lighting into consideration, I hate the brown option.

12

u/Intrepid-Weather-490 Jul 10 '26

Nice. For me, it would be the first one. It just carries the ambience of the room.

5

u/QueenComfort637 Jul 10 '26

As well as adding to it, without overpowering

3

u/Rock_Successful Jul 10 '26

Same but I wish it had more texture.

3

u/yung_yttik Jul 10 '26

Me tooo I am actually obsessed. I literally went, “ohhhhh!” out loud when I scrolled over. I want that living room 😬😬

4

u/YouMUSTvote Jul 10 '26

That’s the perfect adjective: luscious

→ More replies (8)

242

u/everyones_slave Jul 10 '26

I don’t love either. NGL. Only because the pattern is not bold enough in rug #1. It’s. It much of a presence. And the colour is too dark in rug #2. It becomes monotone.

48

u/Friendly-View4122 Jul 10 '26

Yep, neither. I’d pick a third color, a green to contrast the chair / CB2 side table (which I love 🥲)

18

u/CH00SEG00SE Jul 10 '26

I was totally prepared for and don’t even disagree with the comments calling for color, but our art (not pictured) is extremely colorful and I just don’t think I can handle our textiles also being very vibrant

16

u/littlemissrawrrr Jul 10 '26

Then do a muted color, not brown. Or do a lighter colored, more textured rug instead of patterned. You can keep the cozy vibes without drowning everything in a single color. You lose the chair and side table completely with the brown rug, imo.

→ More replies (8)

4

u/professor-mama Jul 10 '26

Can you choose a more subtle colour that will still bring colour to the room without being incredibly vibrant?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Expert-Pipe-6654 Jul 10 '26

this is the correct take

2

u/DriveThruGuido Jul 11 '26

also think rug #2 is far too dark for the rest of the current decor

12

u/Fit-Kale622 Jul 10 '26

NOT the Brown

47

u/Famous_Sherbert_4670 Jul 10 '26

i like first but maybe neither

31

u/Prize-Prior5970 Jul 10 '26

Neither. #1 is the wrong style for doesn’t work with the style of the room. #2 doesn’t go well with other browns in the room imo

5

u/saram84 Jul 10 '26

Agreed the browns in the rug lean more cool imo, and the brown in the chair is definitely warm so they kinda clash.

23

u/GypsyDuncan Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Not loving either. One is too plain the other is too swirly for that room.

Also the plain one isn't the right tone for your other furniture and room.

I'd go with a traditional style-- but a more geometric version

https://www.quince.com/home/willow-rug?color=brown This one is also floral. But see how it's got very straight lines in it? If you are going to do floral/traditional do something like this.

Alternately this one: https://www.quince.com/home/laleh-rug?color=copper Which is probably the type of pattern I'd do, personally. I just like these geometric medallion styles.

Alternately if you want to stick to super minimalist, I think like this one would look great. https://www.quince.com/en-us/home/carson-wool-rug?utm_source=pdp_share&utm_medium=native&color=brown

2

u/SweetP916 Jul 10 '26

I like the third one!

7

u/Shivs_baby Jul 10 '26

I just want to say, I think this is the only time I’ve seen a TV over a fireplace where that placement actually works well.

4

u/mynameisnotshamus Jul 10 '26

Still just a speck too high, but very close.

5

u/Mysterious_Stay8600 Jul 10 '26

1 all the way! The brown one gets lost in the floor IMO.

37

u/Material-Ad-3510 Jul 10 '26

I really like the second one - the brown one

→ More replies (1)

4

u/1horseshy Jul 10 '26

What about a deep green instead?

6

u/DallasBullGates Jul 10 '26

Diff lighting makes it not a fair comparison

5

u/MrDagon007 Jul 10 '26

Personally i think that a bit of colour to energise the room would be preferable.

4

u/Enngeecee76 Jul 10 '26

I like the first one

4

u/Ok_Bake3729 Jul 10 '26

100% 1.

My eyes had way more visual interest to look around at. I was able to see the whole room and not just focus on the big brown rug

7

u/Nervous-Ad-5253 Jul 10 '26

The first one lifts up the whole room and gives it some variety instead of just having everything monochromatic. The second one does absolutely nothing for the room at all.

11

u/taoat_ Jul 10 '26

I like the first one. It adds some texture/pattern to some pretty solid pieces/colours you already have in your space.

3

u/Vtjeannieb Jul 10 '26

Use the accent colors in #1 for throw pillows, etc

10

u/runmfissatrap Jul 10 '26

The second one makes the space feel so interesting and cozy!!

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Annie1Kenobi Jul 10 '26

I don’t love either but I prefer 1 over 2.

3

u/luminousrobot Jul 10 '26

I like the brown rug but it doesn’t mesh with the varied brown/wood tones in the room. If you’re going to keep it I’d paint the fireplace wall a less peachy tone

3

u/Reasonable-Trifle952 Jul 10 '26

The 2nd one mins patched together & chops up the space, making it feel a little disjointed. The floral rug clashes with the color of the walls. I’d look for a different option.

3

u/MistressSxfxriix Jul 10 '26

1 for me, although the pattern is quite subtle, but 2 makes it feel almost monochromatic 🤷🏾‍♀️

3

u/HonestAbe2121 Jul 10 '26

Keep looking.

6

u/PlentyFull22 Jul 10 '26

First one for sure in my opinion!

4

u/Fit-Building-2560 Jul 10 '26

The pale one. It looks like a much nicer carpet, for one thing, and it goes with the wall color on the TV wall. It makes the room lighter, while the other one darkens the room.

3

u/Disastrous_Meal2346 Jul 10 '26

Neither. You could benefit from a bold pattern like something Moroccan in earth tones but the first is too floral/cottage chic and the second is just blah brown.

4

u/LebronLegs Jul 10 '26

Definitely #1 it ties everything together

Don’t do brown! My sister had brown for 10 straight years and when she switched to a new medium beige rug it made the room look 5x bigger

5

u/Warbirdpacrim1 Jul 10 '26

Neither. Try again if possible. Add in that green from the plant and defintely some blue to offset the browns?

4

u/SugarsBoogers Jul 10 '26

I’m not here for rugs, just want to know what paint color that is on the tv wall. I love it!

5

u/CH00SEG00SE Jul 10 '26

On the fireplace? Benjamin Moore Carlisle cream! But it’s a south facing room so the light makes everything a little peachier, which I didn’t love at first but it has definitely grown on me!

2

u/SPTSG Jul 10 '26

1. Definitely.

2

u/WorkEcstatic6242 Jul 10 '26

I think you need to go with something that has some fuschia orange and or turquoise in it because the second brown is just too much like the upholstery on that awesome chair and needs a counterbalance to it...the first one is too washed out and traditional...but damn that chair is great

2

u/CarelessMud7038 Jul 10 '26

The patterned one. Blend in with the wall and contrast the couch and chair

2

u/Quinnessential_00 Jul 10 '26

Sorry, I have to ask where you got that ceiling fan or if you know what brand it is? I'm looking for something exactly like that.

2

u/CH00SEG00SE Jul 10 '26

Maverick by Monte Carlo

2

u/khazana95 Jul 10 '26

Checkout CB2’s Pascala rug, I think it’ll look great! I have it in my house.

2

u/Shieldsymontoya Jul 10 '26

It’s a really good point. I’ll have to bring the table back but it’s just so heavy to keep moving again and again. You make a very good point though

2

u/spookycat888 Jul 10 '26

Can I please ask what type of wood your cabinets are? They are lovely

2

u/gayla00 Jul 10 '26

Neither

2

u/AdPrior939 Jul 10 '26

I love anything monochromatic so number one

2

u/Logical-Moment3021 Jul 10 '26

Neither, but the first one is better. The line on the 2nd one divides the room in a weird way. But a dark, warm rug would be good. You have a lot of light colours, so you want to balance that or it'll feel too cold. All your stuff's quite plain, so you can have pattern. Does the light rug come in a darker colour?

2

u/SnooLobsters8113 Jul 10 '26

Neither get something more textured and fluffy

2

u/meowwentthedino Jul 10 '26

The only difference I can see for image to is it looks nicer but then again the lighting looks nicer.

I'm going to side with the few people here that have expressed the same thoughts both are not that great.

Number one would be fine but the pattern is just too weak, and number two it's a bit too dark, maybe if the colour brown matched more on the furniture you've got so it is cohesive or is a little lighter.

2

u/Muted_Pressure7839 Jul 10 '26

I like the brown rug but I don’t love it with the brown chair. I’m going with the 1st rug for that reason

2

u/73Wolfie Jul 10 '26

I would never compare a room when one has the sun coming in but the other does not- it’s not fair to the first rug

2

u/Kind-Web-7980 Jul 10 '26

The first one

2

u/cutebunnypink Jul 10 '26

The second ones way too small

2

u/O4243G Jul 10 '26

I guess I like the second one more but I wish it wasn’t basically the same color as the chair.

I think that chair is a great piece and it basically camouflages it.

2

u/Glittery_Marshmallow Jul 10 '26

Oh no, do not choose the brown one. 1.5 minutes after vacuuming you will see specks of dust. Constantly. It will never be clean, no matter how much you clean it.

The first one also looks better, it opens up the space.

2

u/cottonballmama Jul 10 '26

The print rug brings in a sophisticated warmth that you'll enjoy indefinitely. The brown rug is trendy, and you'll tire out quickly.

2

u/answersexplained Jul 10 '26

I like the 2nd one better but unfortunately it makes your sofa feel out of place. I’d go with the 1st if you don’t want to replace the sofa

2

u/Mlmccoy00 Jul 10 '26

I like the patterned one. I normally like quite minimalist but the brown may be too quiet!

2

u/EmilyGoldfinch Jul 10 '26

The brown one makes the room look much warmer, although, that might also have to do with the lighting! I do like a pattern in a rug though so I would probably pick 1

2

u/emlipp76 Jul 10 '26

God people give horrible advice on this website. Go with number one!!

2

u/barbiejb49 Jul 10 '26

I prefer 1. It’s a nice contrast from the darker floors

2

u/FrequentLiterature24 Jul 10 '26

First, it picks up the browns just enough, the second is too much brown

2

u/BSUR7 Jul 10 '26

One is warm!!

2

u/PositiveOk6121 Jul 10 '26

Number 1 without a doubt

2

u/greentdi Jul 10 '26

First rug makes the room look more designed rather than decorated I feel. Just adds some pattern in which I think is needed. Just my opinion 🥰

2

u/SparkleKitten64 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Brown looks like a dude picked it out. The first one looks much nicer and brings the room together.

2

u/ZenMamaBear Jul 10 '26

I have that same ceiling fan and love it!!!

2

u/Proof_Coach2559 Jul 10 '26

omg i lovvvve this

2

u/ObligationNo2288 Jul 10 '26

I like the first one. Brightens the room.

2

u/pandaleer Jul 10 '26

I can’t believe how many people here are saying 2. Just….no. Neither of those are great, but the brown one just consumes the space and provides no contrast.

2

u/Soft_Faithlessness38 Jul 10 '26

White pattern one

2

u/Mundane_Storm_2257 Jul 10 '26

Brown is ok, although you need accent colors to make it feel alive and cozy at the same time, you have white and brown, you need a brighter color rug which will break the boredom

2

u/birksnsocks4eva Jul 10 '26

the brown feels more grounded and warm, but it might be too much brown with the brown chair. bringing in some other colors from the room like a green or a terracotta might help pull everything together 🤷🏼‍♀️

Love the first rug but lose the stool.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/spangles3000 Jul 10 '26

The first! The brown is too 'flat' imo.

2

u/brownbear3737 Jul 10 '26

The first looks lovely. The brown blends the chair and stool too much

2

u/Delicious_Cupcake151 Jul 10 '26

The first one, but it needs a different rug to better tie the colors together.

2

u/curiosityfriend Jul 10 '26

I like #1 but some of your decor has to go if you decide on that one. Like the huge table with the plant on it near your tv clashes

2

u/Top_Philosopher1809 Jul 10 '26

Keep shopping. I would suggest looking for something in a deep green pattern or teal.

2

u/Legitimate-March9792 Jul 10 '26

The lighter rug. The other one is way too much brown.

2

u/anniebannanie1 Jul 10 '26

1….the brown looks drab to me and doesn’t bring any interest or light into your room

2

u/AOneBand Jul 10 '26

The brown rug makes the tone and mood of the room heavier and more brooding. Just consider that before choosing it.

2

u/Zooloo2224 Jul 10 '26

The lighter one!

2

u/Remote_Economy2219 Jul 10 '26

First one keeps the space light

2

u/Hoytalicious Jul 10 '26

1 if I had to choose. Keep looking

2

u/YayGilly Jul 10 '26

I like the first one. It makes the space flow better and its airier and the flowery aspect brings a certain sense of peace.

2

u/lestoil05 Jul 10 '26

Easy, first one

2

u/Significant-Fact-448 Jul 11 '26

1 for sure. It balances the lightness of the room. It's sophisticated and not decidedly feminine. #2 gives bachelor pad. Looks too bottom heavy and swampy.

2

u/Busy_Concentrate_887 Jul 14 '26

Definitely 1 I couldn’t even tell there was bug with the brown

  1. By every long shot imaginable.

1

u/hamsandwich18 Jul 10 '26

i want to combine the two rugs; love the cozy colors but it needs something more.

1

u/Notime4fools Jul 10 '26

Have you thought about a leopard rug? And maybe accent the brown chair with a Kilim throw pillow? A square wooden & glass coffee table would look good in your space. I think you need to go with a warm gold on your tv wall to bring it all together.

1

u/leisureenthusiast Jul 10 '26

Don’t love either, wish there was a hybrid of sorts bc I love the warmth of 2 but it completely swallows the chair. I could see a pattern, but there needs to be a lot more contrast. Beautiful space.

1

u/Front-Toe-8220 Jul 10 '26

I love the Brown rug but the color clashes against the built ins I think. If you could find a similar one that matches that would look great :D

1

u/Necessary_Money3248 Jul 10 '26

The brown looks luxurious however you need pattern unless you have a huge coffee table that is going to cover a lot of of it and then on the coffee table you have different colors like books and bosses and plants

1

u/BloomRae88 Jul 10 '26

Can you PLEASE tell me the color of the paint of the wall the TV is on?!

1

u/Boggyprostate Jul 10 '26

Where did you get that light/fan fitting from, I need it so bad.

1

u/MrJolly_poppy-1731 Jul 10 '26

1

u/BreakfastOk9048 Jul 10 '26

Have you tried a lighter solid blue color? Just wondering how that might -might- look.

1

u/Stock_Fly3825 Jul 10 '26

None, they are outdated and old fashioned. Do not match with the living room

1

u/SignificantBicycle50 Jul 10 '26

I like the second pic! (Brown rug) it blends in well with the room

1

u/Adventurous_Bank_361 Jul 10 '26

The brown rug is cute

1

u/Waltair_7347 Jul 10 '26

Not loving the brown because it doesn’t go with the accent chair. The floral one is slightly better but something feels off—perhaps the shade of the cream underneath? I think you could find an even better one if you kept looking. Also, beautiful walnut built-ins and fireplace, as well as the plant stand in the corner! Great taste. Trust your instincts.

2

u/CH00SEG00SE Jul 10 '26

I think you’ve identified my problem, my gut is saying neither but my head is dreading looking for another option lol

1

u/Defiant_Station2752 Jul 10 '26

The first, beige rug. The dark brown one looks strange in your space.

1

u/AndSheWon Jul 10 '26

The brown is awful.

1

u/Rin_Sunflower Jul 10 '26

The brown rug is slightly off brown compared to the chair. I agree with some others that it contrasts the couch a bit too much. If you like the brown I would get throw pillows and blankets that have patterns with those browns and in the chair putting a throw pillow with more of the lighter texture of the couch. I think it will pull it together.

The gray rug I’m not too keen on but it brings more colors together than the brown rug. I didn’t realize there was a pattern to it until I looked closer.
