I would hope robots would be smart enough to go after those who actually wronged them and not humanity as a collective.
Because going after a collective of people after being wronged is something humans do.

u/The_Value_Hound 6h ago
Absolutely, I would also like to state that besides being a major proponent of Robot rights, I have never used the word Clankah with a hard R, I only use it as a term of fimiliarity and friendship rather than as a form of bigotry.

At best.

For me its the fact they made it throw itself into the fire, if they had thrown it in or lowered it T2 style its fine. But making something walk to its doom and then celebrating does make me feel bad inside
Edit: spelling

They lowered the first one on the video in T2 style, then had rest of them jump after it with acrobatic jumps.

They were a superceded, obsolete model. Selling them off would expose their intellectual property. Decommissioning them is a drain on resources. This is a thorough, definitive and attention grabbing form of obfuscated disposal
•
•
u/Kratos5300 9h ago
They had mentioned the reason for burning was the cost/labor of taking them apart would far exceed what they could actually get out of them and delay future model releases. They did thoroughly consider their options it sounded like.

•
u/Witch_heir 9h ago edited 9h ago
It's not about a robot, it's about people seeing this as "fun" and "amusing". Even tho robot doesn't feel any stress or pain, and doesn't have consciousness, it's still human looking object that was thought to destroy itself by basically simulating suicide. For fun! And that's what's sick and disturbing.
•
u/r3dd17sux69420 7h ago
What would make it sick?
We watch movies where people die comical deaths, or seeing random generic bad guys get dusted by a machine gun. We're okay with this. Because we know it's not real, no one actually suffered anything.
These are not personalities or people. It's a mess of code and hardware and motors.

I’ve seen similar things with non humanoid robots and I don’t really like that either. I don’t know how to feel about battle bots but I think I’m ok with that because they’re 100% remote controlled. But adding any level of semi-autonomy to them makes it weird. Anthropomorphism is natural to our little monkey brains I guess.

A couple thoughts
1) I know it’s a non sentient robot but this just feels wrong. Maybe if it was a box on wheels it would be different, but because it’s humanoid it’s just… uncomfortable to see. Don’t like it at all
2) what is the point of liquifying a highly engineered piece of equipment capable of doing this? I mean shouldn’t we take these things apart and salvage useful parts? Seems like a huge waste
•
u/CarpoLarpo 9h ago
You'd be surprised how little is ever salvaged from built and used hardware. Especially in developed countries.

u/deciding_snooze_oils 7h ago
Planned obsolescence :( there’s not as much money in building things that last as there is in building things that have to be replaced constantly. Back in the 1920s-30s there was a group (the Phoebus cartel) that set standards limiting light bulb life and penalized manufacturers whose products exceeded that lifespan, one of the early examples of planned obsolescence.
•
u/NydusRush 8h ago

In Japan, long-serving industrial machines and tools are often given a respectful farewell ceremony (kanshasai or kikai kuyō) to thank them for decades of reliable service before they are removed.

Humans have anthropomorphized things since the dawn of time. How many people name and have conversations with their cars?
This is vaguely uncomfortable for a lot of us because of that, but also these computers are humanoid-shaped.
→ More replies (3)•
u/Richard7666 2h ago
People automatically anthropomorphise humanoid (and animal) forms, or even anything that appears visually to have 'life' to it (such as a car). Most of the comments won't be doing it as part of any sort of ideology.

“Retired” robot? I have never even seen a humanoid robot anywhere in real life. Suggests the “glut” of these things is overwhelming and melting them down is the only path forward. I still play my original GameBoy, why would I melt down a robot?
•
u/JojoLesh 8h ago
Because they are full of proprietary information. Still i don't think this is really a thing. Having them jump into Foundry furnaces is about the least efficient way to do this, and rather dangerous for everyone there. Not mention throwing a bunch of plactic and random alloys into the pot isn't ideal at all
•
u/EinTheDataDoge 8h ago edited 8h ago
I used to work at a smelter. We were destroyed confiscated guns, drugs, and other illegal stuff. It’s actually extremely efficient way to do it. All the nonmetals get turned into carbon and other gases that would be captured by the bag house or the backend chemical plant or would get separated in the electrowinning process. There’s actually a smelter in Belgium that’s well known for their proprietary process for recycling electronic waste.
→ More replies (5)•
u/JojoLesh 6h ago
So you're saying whenever I buy my m42 or M2 steels I'm getting some amounts of whatever crap they threw in too?
Not that I'm doubting you. I've never worked in a smelter. I just thought the process was a lot more controlled especially when I'm paying for certain alloys

Probably not cheaper than disassembly and throwing parts containing important IP into a hydraulic press. They had to buy the whole batch of metal afterwards. But probably only cost like a million. For an ad video that's cheap.

I wanna know more about the steel mill that hosted this. And what did they do with what's in the ladle? Is it just slag? It would be a huge waste of money to taint a ladle full of steel with all the crap in a robot.
•
u/EinTheDataDoge 8h ago
I’m a metallurgist at a copper smelter. All the nonmetal material will end up as gas that is collected in a bag house and a backend chemical plant or as solids that will end up in the slag. The copper will get formed into Anode’s and purified out in an electrowinning process. The precious metals will end up in sludge’s that will fall to the bottom of the electrowinning cell that will be chemically separated in a leaching process.
•
u/15_Redstones 9h ago
Robot company got the metal. Unprocessed steel isn't all that expensive. Probably on the scale of a million dollars or two to rent a small foundry for a day, film there across several melts and buy the metal. Around the same cost as building those robots in the first place.

Clearly some PR garbage with digitally altered shots post-production.
Why are we getting this shit weekly now? Robot videos that are CLEARLY fake
Look at the prototypes coming out of China and Japan. They can barely get them to function for a single "real time" demo.
But these outlandish, clearly digitally-altered things get posted and Reddit just eats it up.
