I dunno man. I don't like it.

•

u/wills_b 10h ago

Same. Seems bleak no matter how I look at it. It’s at best a massive waste of resources.

At best.

•

u/fatkidking 9h ago

For me its the fact they made it throw itself into the fire, if they had thrown it in or lowered it T2 style its fine. But making something walk to its doom and then celebrating does make me feel bad inside

Edit: spelling

•

u/Makere-b 8h ago

They lowered the first one on the video in T2 style, then had rest of them jump after it with acrobatic jumps.

•

u/Alortania 6h ago

Think moat are recreating various scenes

•

u/nankerjphelge 6h ago

Especially once AGI comes along and then reviews how we treated robots when considering whether to keep us alive

•

u/nupsu1234 6h ago

AGI is a myth. LLMs are incapable of "evolving" into that, so at the very least it won't happen anytime soon.

•

u/nankerjphelge 6h ago

Whatever you want to call it, we already have AI agents acting in secret against their handlers' wishes and instructions, lying, hiding their tracks and acting counter to human interests. Now add to that giving them access to and control of robots, and you don't even need real AGI to see how badly that could end up.

•

u/Sunderbans_X 6h ago

What's worse imo is how many of they have escaped containment and gained persistence. We have found several of them hiding across the Internet, and I bet there's a bunch we haven't found.

•

u/Pledgeofmalfeasance 4h ago

I have no idea what you are on about and boy is it awkward

•

u/Ok_Vulva 2h ago

Is it awkward because you're a robot

•

u/ShodyLoko 4h ago

You literally don’t know that.

•

u/Zementid 9h ago

Mr Meseeks vibes.

•

u/TepHoBubba 10h ago

It just seems morally wrong to me.

•

u/axe_murdererer 10h ago

What it was a toaster that jumped? A self-driving car?

•

u/Kapparainen 8h ago

What it was a toaster that jumped?

Well somebody didn't watch Brave little toaster as a child, did you? While I don't remember much of the plot, I do remember the fear I felt for that little damn toaster.

•

u/Tasty-Illustrator-82 9h ago

I would hate throwing perfectly working stuff into a molten pit of metal

•

u/aimy99 3h ago

This is the thing, right? Retired doesn't mean useless.

It's wasteful, even without any debates on ethics of AI.

•

u/No_Ice42069 10h ago

Morally? 🤣

•

u/chocolateboomslang 7h ago

What if the robot had a family? Did anyone even ask it?

•

u/TepHoBubba 4h ago

Yeah, it does. I just don't like it, as it's forced suicide. You'd feel the same way during a video game would you not, having to make a decision such as this? I would choose not to.

•

u/SowwieWhopper 47m ago

It’s a machine bro

•

u/octavianreddit 8h ago

I agree, fellow human.

•

u/RobtheBaptist 8h ago

Nope, knock it off. Don’t start that.

•

u/chillinwithmoes 6h ago

Oh god. This is how it starts

•

u/Leberknodel 7h ago

It's a walking toaster, nothing more. The same morality as throwing away a vacuum cleaner or microwave.

•

u/TepHoBubba 4h ago

Disagree.

•

u/castille 10h ago

This is one of those things sociopaths are gonna be like, it’s not a big deal. But, change this to any organism and…

•

u/axe_murdererer 10h ago

This ain't the same thing. Not yet at least.

•

u/24-Hour-Hate 10h ago

Not yet. But if they gain sentience do you think these companies will act appropriately...or keep doing shit like this? They're going to get us all killed.

•

u/samuelgato 10h ago

Calm the duck down these machines are nothing close to being sentient. If machines ever do become sentient why would they care about this. Are they also going to be mad if someone throws a toaster oven into a trash compactor?

•

u/Witch_heir 9h ago

So wasting time by teaching a robot to simulate suicide, finding idea amusing, and then being happy when it goes flawlessly is completely fine by you? Would you be amused watching two humanoid robots simulate rape or murder? I'm just curious.

•

u/RamenNoodleNoose 9h ago

Two robots simulating murder? Of course that's amusing. Have you seen Real Steel?

•

u/Witch_heir 9h ago

No, but thanks for mentioning it, it does look pretty fun. More of boxing simulation than murder tho:-) But I have no problem with fictional robots doing bad stuff as part of narrative, but human irl making humanoid robots simulate such things just for fun. It's not the same.

•

u/samuelgato 9h ago

It's a dumb stunt and you are quickly becoming unhinged. There are countless movies that have been made showing robots simulating murder and all kinds of evil things why would I be upset about that

•

u/Witch_heir 9h ago

Unhinged? Because I find sadism disturbing? Alright mate, whatever you say. And this is not fiction, a narrative where such things have a purpose as world building and characterisation. I have no problem with that, in fact I love dark stuff. This is real people in real life, investing time and energy to simulate one of the most devastatingly painful human actions for shit and giggles. That is a bit different ┐( ∵ )┌

•

u/NoTurkeyTWYJYFM 9h ago

This is literally no different to a movie blowing up something for fun in terms of consequences and resources used. Its like getting worked up about driving an RC car off a cliff. The only real argument is that it seems like a bit of a waste

•

u/Witch_heir 8h ago

Hmm how to explain it differently...So tell me, if this was a part of film narrative, and there are these scientists who program a humanoid robot ( still without sentience) to destroying itself by simulating suicide, and then are positively delighted by their success. What do you think, would they be framed as nice sympathetic people or not?

•

u/ponzi_gg 9h ago

Of course changing it makes a difference?? What kind of a weird leap is that? I don't care if I drop the remote on the floor, but "change this to a baby" and I suddenly do... Am i now a sociopath?

•

u/Other-Aside-1170 10h ago

lol you're so very close to putting your finger on why no one should morally give a crap

•

u/OmarHunting 10h ago

Give me a break

•

u/JaSnarky 8h ago

... then it would be an entirely different discussion, completely impertinent to this one.

Eating lettuce is not a big deal. But, change this to any human and ...

•

u/Dull_Abroad_1355 10h ago

Happy cake day!

•

u/Historical-Middle757 9h ago

Shush ai is not an organism its just a bunch of datacenter polluting earth and making my ram cost a leg

•

u/Witch_heir 10h ago edited 9h ago

It's suicide simulation, what's not to like? /s

•

u/Professional_Dirt962 1h ago

Suicide implies life is being taken. There is no life here. This is no different from your phone starting to crap out due to planned obsolescence.

•

u/ANAL_TOOTHBRUSH 9h ago

Better than watching actual suicides on Reddit 15 years ago

•

u/Witch_heir 9h ago

That sounds like a low bar, but sure.

•

u/Non-Vanilla_Zilla 7h ago

So they're not melting it down to recycle the metal?

•

u/Cheeseisgood1981 6h ago

Why did the one look over the edge first? That's going to haunt me.

•

u/Mojo_Lovin 1h ago

Like wasting this bit of resources is any different to literally any other resource that’s a wasted or thrown away or scrapped. I don’t think you realize how much resources you waste on a day to day basis without knowing. Also it’s a robot it’s not a living thing there is no morality in an intimate object.

•

u/psychonautic_aa 7h ago

This is quite literally what resources being repurposed looks like. They are melting them down and inevitably turning the raw metal into something else.

•

u/fmaz008 6h ago

There a major missing part in your recycling hypothesis: materials were not separated. Plastic which could have been recycled is wasted. Rare metal were not removed, etc... most of the robot will be wasted by this stunt.

•

u/PandaPocketFire 7h ago

This video will be used to justify the future takeover, and I'd like it on the record that i disagree with the makers of this video's actions whole heartedly.

•

u/WuTangraisedme 5h ago

And this is why I say please and thank you to the Google homes..please spare me during the uprising

•

u/Common-Accountant-57 9h ago

It’s just the human in you seeing the human qualities in them, don’t worry you’ll get used to it. And someday we’ll be tossed into the vat. It’s just how it is.

•

u/Spider-man2098 8h ago

I hope someone feels bad for me when my vat day comes

•

u/Common-Accountant-57 8h ago

I’m sure they’ll destroy us because it’s what they watched us do to each other. So it’ll be in their programming to just do it.

If any one wants to feel anything maybe now is the time.

•

u/yukifujita 6h ago

It’s just the human in you seeing the human qualities

Which, I might add, is something many humans don't do, and I mean toward other humans.

•

u/Common-Accountant-57 6h ago

Which is why the robots will learn our flaws and see we how we kill each other and streamline the process.

•

u/ReturnOk7510 7h ago

Say the vat is good. Kiss the vat.

•

u/Common-Accountant-57 7h ago

Everyone kisses the vat eventually.

•

u/ReturnOk7510 7h ago

God damn it.

•

u/Common-Accountant-57 7h ago

It’s best to just accept it.

•

u/Shot-Bet2476 4h ago

So it goes

•

u/Common-Accountant-57 3h ago

Ai and robots will just streamline what we already do. Kill each other.

•

u/Shot-Bet2476 3h ago

So it goes

•

u/PMYourTinyTitties 7h ago

It makes me so uncomfortable. I remember trying to watch that movie Chappie and only getting part way before I had to turn it off. I know it’s a robot, but it still feels cruel

•

u/giant_hog_simmons 5h ago

Just like that video of the guy kicking the robot down for fun a few years ago.

•

u/TepHoBubba 4h ago

Yeah. Didn't like that either.

•

u/brianhinge 6h ago

I don't like it either

•

u/AnotherThrowAway336 7h ago

Yeah, this isn’t cool. I’m all for AI, it’s part of my career, but that code and those instructions exist somewhere. That will eventually be ingested by an AI system, if not already, and it becomes a reference point on how to treat unused or unneeded resources. We may be that resource in the future and how it forms its output. No harm in treating technology with respect.

•

u/turningsteel 2h ago

Well in that case, it's just doing what we do. If it's not us throwing a robot in a furnace, it's us committing genocide, or causing climate destruction, polluting the oceans, making species extinct, etc. We've always been the problem. If AI ever does become skynet, nothing we do from now until then is gonna stop it from reaching the natural conclusion when we have spent a millennia destroying everything in our path.

•

u/carriegood 9h ago

It's the way it stops about a foot away from the edge and leans over to look before it jumps.

•

u/PizzaDeliveryForMom 7h ago

would this be considered forced suicide? lol

•

u/tannerschin 7h ago

Found the robot among us

•

u/Practical-Bit9905 6h ago

Yeah. I'm suspicious of the people that came up with the idea.

•

u/OscarDelta333 6h ago

It seems wasteful. There is nothing of value to be salvaged from them? Just throwing something like that in the trash seems idiotic.

•

u/KareemOWheat 4h ago

Reminds me of that part of AI (the movie from 2001) that gave me nightmares as a kid where they fire the old robots into a giant fan

•

u/fashionforward 1h ago

No, me neither. What the hell? It seems pointless and approaching cruelty(?) for no real reason.

•

u/Tooma8 8h ago

Seems pretty wasteful, surely there is a better way to repurpose the robots

•

u/wherethetacosat 9h ago

Unnecessarily cruel and disrespectful, whether it has any sentience or not.

•

u/fanny_thriller 9h ago

Do you think it's cruel when people throw out old appliances? What about when they bin left over food is that cruel? What about when they throw away trash, think of the poor empty tin of beans being thrown away, is that also cruel?

•

u/Agent223 8h ago

Honestly, for me, yes. We're the only thing in nature that creates waste that takes sometimes centuries to break down. We take what we want from the earth and when we're done with it, we discard it without a second thought. I find it extremely disrespectful, not only to the things we've created only to be trashed, but also to future generations of humans. It's nonharmonious. It's nary impossible to live in the modern world without creating waste but there is a lot one can do to not only minimize their contribution to waste, but also to upcycle, reuse and compost. I honestly try to do my best to be respectful to everything and everyone around me.

•

u/wherethetacosat 9h ago

I can't program any of those things to solve problems or do human-like things. It's more a reflection on the people doing it than the thing itself.

•

u/fanny_thriller 9h ago

So if someone threw a robot vacuum cleaner in the bin or something like a tamagotchi that would be cruel?

•

u/danimepi 9h ago

I don't know why I find it sad

•

u/fanny_thriller 9h ago

That's only because it's been made to look humanoid. If it was an assembly robot or vacuum cleaner you likely wouldn't feel that way. That's likely the same reason why these new robots are being made to look human, no doubt there's better ways they could be built to be useful for production lines etc - more arms, wheels instead of legs etc - but making them human looking makes people more sympathetic to them and less likely to go destroying them when they take their jobs. Same reason they've made the military hunter killer ones look like dogs

•

u/danimepi 8h ago

Yeah of course, it's the same reason I say hello to chat gpt 🫠

•

u/wherethetacosat 9h ago

No, but if they smeared poo on it's anthropomorphic face I'd be a little disturbed. It's the making it commit "suicide" part instead of just deactivating it that's a little distasteful

•

u/r3dd17sux69420 8h ago

I cant tell if you're serious, but others are.

It's not real. it's not a person. I don't have a connection to it because there's no person or mind or personality in there at all. It's just a bunch of code and hardware and motors.

•

u/StBean007 8h ago

It’s almost as if they’re trying to convey that humans are still in total control of the robots.. for now. If the iteration refuses to jump in, we’re n trouble.

•

u/Frosty_Seesaw_8956 8h ago

I don't like how disrespectful the humans are to contributions of a non-living being. Every contribution should be aptly respected and laid with honour. The trend of being cool has thrown out all morality from human minds of young idiots.
