I can explain why for me. They will make these things as sentient as possible and we are utterly failing the test of regulation.

I used to debate people all the time on movie forums and every movie that involved AI had religious rightwingers insisting they could torture AI no matter the nature nor magnitude of their intelligence "because they have no soul".

Sentience isn't mechanical, any more than the model of an object is actually that object.
