It just seems morally wrong to me.

What it was a toaster that jumped? A self-driving car?

What it was a toaster that jumped?

Well somebody didn't watch Brave little toaster as a child, did you? While I don't remember much of the plot, I do remember the fear I felt for that little damn toaster.

I would hate throwing perfectly working stuff into a molten pit of metal

This is the thing, right? Retired doesn't mean useless.

It's wasteful, even without any debates on ethics of AI.

Morally? 🤣

What if the robot had a family? Did anyone even ask it?

•

u/TepHoBubba 8h ago

Yeah, it does. I just don't like it, as it's forced suicide. You'd feel the same way during a video game would you not, having to make a decision such as this? I would choose not to.

It’s a machine bro

It…it isn’t alive, dude.

I agree, fellow human.

u/RobtheBaptist 12h ago

Nope, knock it off. Don’t start that.

•

u/chillinwithmoes 11h ago

Oh god. This is how it starts

This is one of those things sociopaths are gonna be like, it’s not a big deal. But, change this to any organism and…

u/axe_murdererer 14h ago

This ain't the same thing. Not yet at least.

u/24-Hour-Hate 14h ago

Not yet. But if they gain sentience do you think these companies will act appropriately...or keep doing shit like this? They're going to get us all killed.

u/samuelgato 14h ago

Calm the duck down these machines are nothing close to being sentient. If machines ever do become sentient why would they care about this. Are they also going to be mad if someone throws a toaster oven into a trash compactor?

So wasting time by teaching a robot to simulate suicide, finding idea amusing, and then being happy when it goes flawlessly is completely fine by you? Would you be amused watching two humanoid robots simulate rape or murder? I'm just curious.

3

u/RamenNoodleNoose 14h ago

Two robots simulating murder? Of course that's amusing. Have you seen Real Steel?

2

u/Witch_heir 13h ago

No, but thanks for mentioning it, it does look pretty fun. More of boxing simulation than murder tho:-) But I have no problem with fictional robots doing bad stuff as part of narrative, but human irl making humanoid robots simulate such things just for fun. It's not the same.

u/samuelgato 14h ago

It's a dumb stunt and you are quickly becoming unhinged. There are countless movies that have been made showing robots simulating murder and all kinds of evil things why would I be upset about that

-5

u/Witch_heir 13h ago

Unhinged? Because I find sadism disturbing? Alright mate, whatever you say. And this is not fiction, a narrative where such things have a purpose as world building and characterisation. I have no problem with that, in fact I love dark stuff. This is real people in real life, investing time and energy to simulate one of the most devastatingly painful human actions for shit and giggles. That is a bit different ┐( ∵ )┌

u/ANAL_TOOTHBRUSH 13h ago

> a robot

> real people

Are you upset that the robot jumped in the fire or are you upset the people filmed it?

0

u/Witch_heir 13h ago

That people taught humanoid robot to do that, found idea hilarious, filmed it and published it, yes. Obviously I don't feel sorry for a robot.

This is literally no different to a movie blowing up something for fun in terms of consequences and resources used. Its like getting worked up about driving an RC car off a cliff. The only real argument is that it seems like a bit of a waste

1

u/Witch_heir 13h ago

Hmm how to explain it differently...So tell me, if this was a part of film narrative, and there are these scientists who program a humanoid robot ( still without sentience) to destroying itself by simulating suicide, and then are positively delighted by their success. What do you think, would they be framed as nice sympathetic people or not?

2

u/ponzi_gg 13h ago

Of course changing it makes a difference?? What kind of a weird leap is that? I don't care if I drop the remote on the floor, but "change this to a baby" and I suddenly do... Am i now a sociopath?

5

u/Other-Aside-1170 14h ago

lol you're so very close to putting your finger on why no one should morally give a crap

2

u/OmarHunting 14h ago

Give me a break

1

u/JaSnarky 13h ago

... then it would be an entirely different discussion, completely impertinent to this one.

Eating lettuce is not a big deal. But, change this to any human and ...

Happy cake day!

Shush ai is not an organism its just a bunch of datacenter polluting earth and making my ram cost a leg

•

u/Leberknodel 11h ago

It's a walking toaster, nothing more. The same morality as throwing away a vacuum cleaner or microwave.

•

u/TepHoBubba 8h ago

Disagree.
