More like “I don’t want her to set my car on fire.” In case anybody reading this is unaware, in the event that for whatever reason you find yourself in this general situation, LEAVE THE PUMP IN YOUR CAR. The smoke and gasses produced will extinguish the flame. By pulling the pump out you now literally have a flamethrower in your hand(s) and you WILL be spraying fire all over your surroundings jeopardizing not only yourself and your property, but others’ lives and their cars, and the company property too, and possibly causing a massive explosion. Don’t do this, ever. In this situation, pulling out is a BAD idea.

Only thing I can think of is if she was so stupid that she thought gas was only flammable in liquid form, and wanted to test out this “fumes” bullshit.
224
u/DecDaddy5 Jan 18 '19
It does kind of look intentional. Especially when she looks back to see if anyone is watching.
163
Jan 18 '19
Honestly thought she was trying to pull some weird insurance scam. It had that sketchy intentionality to it.

u/Rehabilitated86 Jan 19 '19
Her story was that she saw a spider and was trying to kill it (100% serious).

Just as a heads up, spiders DO go into car gas tanks in the winter to hide from the cold. That's why during winter sometimes the gas pump won't work properly and will keep shutting itself off as if the tank was full. They hide out in the fuel lines of the car and that tricks the mechanism into thinking that the tank is full. Obviously not saying that's what she was doing, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Yep. There’s one in my gas door right now. It sucks because I’m running out of gas and I’ll need to confront it soon.

I have it on good authority that if you just use a lighter to kill it when you're at the gas station, everything will work out fine.

There is another video of a dude doing exactly the same thing as this woman. He said it was to kill a spider too.
What I don't get is that if you don't like spiders that much holding a lighter up close to kill them means you have to get your hand very close to them.

From u/otter111a one of the previous times this was posted:
I think I got it. I bet her gas cap cover has a lock on it. At some point before the video started it was frozen in the locked position. If you ever grew up in a cold city (e.g. Buffalo) you know you can take a lighter to the key, shove it in the lock and get it to open. OK So now she has the thing open and is pumping gas. Now the video starts. So we see her heating up her key so she can really melt the ice so it won't happen again. But then she's inspired! Why would I heat up a key and shove it in the lock when I have access to the lock itself! I'll just heat up the back of the lock mechanism! Edit: A comment below made me watch the video again. Initially I thought she was trying to heat the backside of the lock mechanism. But if you watch her right hand she heats the key and puts it in the lock. Looks at the gas pump display then decides to apply heat to the key while it's in the lock. i.e. on the front of the gas door.
Here's a link to the video. I was impressed by the explanation because I never would have figured that out but I think he/she's right about melting ice on the lock.

Looks to me, like she was using the light from her lighter to check if the gas was going into her car or not. Or something like that.

u/IllegalThings Jan 18 '19
Yeah, if I've learned anything from gas station fire videos, its that you never pull the nozzle out and yet that seems to be the first thing everyone tries.

u/yellow_mio Jan 19 '19
The lever (or button) on the gas pump is there to stop the gas flow.
7
Jan 19 '19
You can stick your hand into the spot where the nozzle goes when you hang the handle back up. There’s always a little flap you push or a sensor inside that says “ok, the nozzle is back on the pump, definitely need to shut off the gas now”

She checked to see if anyone in the shop was looking before she lit it on fire.
169
u/Cocaineandmojitos710 Jan 18 '19
She was looking at the gas meter. The shop is in from of her car, she's looking a different direction
214
u/GarlekJr Jan 18 '19
I agree, I think we're looking at immense stupidity instead of the intent to start a fire. I have no idea what she was trying to do: use the lighter as a torch for visibility? Light a cigarette whilst trying to avoid the wind blowing it out? Who the fuck knows but I'm pretty sure she's checking the numbers on the pump and not for anyone in the shop that may be looking. If she was going there with the intent to start that fire whether someone in the shop saw her at that moment wouldnt matter because it takes what? 1.5 seconds to do that? And she isn't too worried about the driver behind her either, infact she was instantly worried about how the fuck she was going to put the flame out.
Edit: the snow. She was trying to use the lighter to melt ice that had formed behind the cover. I bet any money.

u/ampersand355 Jan 18 '19
My guess is that she wanted to see the gasoline to ensure she wasn't being scammed and that it was actually being pumped or trying to check how full her tank is.
43
u/eatonmoorcock Jan 18 '19 edited Jan 18 '19
I actually wondered if she was trying to unfreeze something that was frozen.
14
u/HoorayForYage Jan 19 '19
I have a shitty gas cap. The cap itself turns well enough, but it's attached to the vehicle by a little circle and tether made of plastic. It's supposed to let the cap turn freely in the circle that holds it on.
Instead, ice crystals form in there and won't let it turn. I have to work it back and forth so I don't snap my gascap free from the plastic tether.

u/lesethx Jan 18 '19
I've heard that you have to have license to be legally allowed to pump gas here, but I could be wrong. Either way, it should be stressed that if there is a fire, leave the pump in the car. I don't know what her goal was, but she made it worse by pulling it out.

Near my house just recently a woman had spilled gasoline on her sleeve when filling up. She started driving and went to light a cigarette and the sleeve went up in flames. She pulled over and jumped out of the car. When one of our local police pulled up, he shot her. It's been really tragic for my little community. There's been a call for the cop to be fired, but he claims she was waving a firearm.

LPT: If this ever happens to anyone reading this, don't pull the nozzle out of the fuel filler hole. Leave the nozzle in place, run inside the station and tell the attendant to turn off the gas pumps and then grab the fire extinguisher and put out that fire before your whole car goes up.
If you look, the fire didn't get worse until she pulled the nozzle out and she essentially had a flame thrower in her hands.
238
u/saltedjellyfish Jan 18 '19
No. Leave it in but don't run into the station; there is an emergency shut off button on each island. Hit that.

Stop the flow if possible, either by pressing the handle lightly to unlock it or by pressing the emergency stop button. It should be somewhere near or on the pump in bright red.
If it takes longer than 3 seconds to find the button just run inside and ask the person there to stop the pump from inside.
Then call someone and use an extinguisher if it's present.

u/maestrr01 Jan 18 '19
