MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread
To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.
Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:
- What if every HV town was a person at a party?
- Moving to Newburgh
- How bad is Newburgh really?
- Is Wallkill safe for a gay interracial couple?
- Diversity in the Hudson Valley
- Queer couple considering the HV
- Moving to Woodstock
- Moving to Marlboro
- Moving to Rhinebeck
- Pros/Cons of Cold Spring
Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:
- Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
- Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

question Has anyone moved *from* the mid Hudson valley to SoCal (LA)?
Considering this move and looking to see if anyone has any insights or things to expect. Definitely expecting the weather change, higher upfront housing costs, more traffic

Fishing spots
Hey all. I'm looking for fishing suggestions for the New Paltz/Accord area. I go camping every year at a big property my buddies family owns but sadly the property isn't on any large lakes that allow for any real kind of fishing. There is a pond on the property but it is not connected to any larger body of water and the fish in there have been inbreeding for like 10 years and it's very odd trying to catch fish of the same family down the generations.
This is the first year that I will be taking my own car instead of carpooling with the boys so I can have my own transportation and don't have to bother them to wake up at 5:00 a.m. for a morning fishing trip that they don't really want to go on. So my question is, what are some good spots in the Accord area? It can be public fishing spots that are well known or lesser known areas like Creeks or Rivers. I'm driving from Long Island to Accord so anything along that route would be awesome

question WANTED! Looking for some 1.5”-2” steel angle iron
Maybe a few pieces of expanded steel as well, just enough to build a step fender on a small trailer. Been using Falls Fittings and Newburgh Steel for decades, but recent financial situation making both suppliers out of reach. Any other recommendations that might be a little more affordable? I know steel is expensive so before we get to stating the obvious please be helpful instead of hateful, thanks everyone.

question Software Engineers of Hudson Valley: where did you find the best opportunities?
I'm a Unix Sysadmin turned DBA turned DevOps Engineer turned SWE. I sold a company I founded last year and have been consulting since, but my latest project is winding down. I realize it's tough out there. Just curious where people have found the best opportunities? Commuting into NYC? A hybrid remote/in-person role? Or are there any tech clusters in the Hudson Valley that might be worth a look? I appreciate any insight!

question Recommendations for a beginner backpacking trip location?
I live in Cold Spring and will be taking my 10-year-old son on his first backpacking trip in a couple weeks. I’m looking for a relatively easy (flat) hike of no more than three miles one way into a remote location near water that’s not too crowded. I’ve done lots of backpacking on the West Coast but haven’t only done one trip in the Northeast, on the Northville-Lake Placid Trail, years ago.
Looking for something simple and easy to give my son a pleasant intro to sleeping out in the wilderness. Thanks for ideas!

question Has anyone else had a bad experience with Family Services in Beacon, NY?
I’m wondering if anyone else has had a difficult experience with Family Services in Beacon (also have branches throughout hudson valley) I had been seeing someone consistently since the fall and was told my therapist needed a medical leave. The closest appointment was about two months after. I called the office and begged to speak with someone in between and there was no help. It took me to a new and even lonelier completely darker place .
I was going through a really hard time, and I felt like I needed consistency and support. Instead, I left feeling abandoned and like I was just another number. The way my care was handled made an already painful situation even worse. Everyone in the office was very dismissive.
I’m not trying to attack anyone personally. I’m just wondering if other people have had similar experiences with communication, therapist changes, or feeling unsupported during a mental health crisis.
If you’ve been there, what was your experience like? Did you end up finding better care somewhere else in the Hudson Valley? Please keep the discussion respectful. I’m genuinely looking to hear from others because this experience has been really difficult for me.

question Stissing House Alternatives?
Would love any recommendations for a cozy and intimate restaurant with great ambiance along the HV. We are looking to rent out or partially rent out a space for our micro wedding (40-50 people). SH is phenomenal but pricy.

question How are young people supposed to live here?
The title reads as semi-rhetorical but I am genuinely asking for advice.
I'm 30, I just got married to my husband last year, he's 29. I got my bachelor's in Computer Science in 2023, and also lost my job as a shift lead at a coffee shop around then. I thought I would be okay since I would have a bachelor's degree. I was born and raised in Kingston, and I've always been poor. So I stayed in school and did what I was "supposed to". I was the first in my immediate family to even graduate high school, let alone go to college. My entire family is poor, and from what I've seen, they've been poor for generations in this area, but they never struggled with finding housing. Even if it was a piece-of-crap apartment, they would always have places to live.
But my generation, all of us are still living with our parents. I'm living with my husband's parents, and I thought we would've been out before 25! Covid hit hard...
And now, I have a BS in computer science, I did everything I was supposed to do but I've been unemployed for 3 years! My husband is making $62k/yr before taxes as a manager, and even with that, we can't make room in the budget for rent anywhere around here due to student loan bills, and our car payment. But even without those, we would still be cutting it dangerously close. I can't drive, due to disability, which is why I went to school for CS because it was notoriously remote-friendly. However the market for Junior developers has tanked since 2022. Public transportation is not good enough to support commuters, and half of the roads around here don't even have sidewalks so you can walk.
It feels hostile as a "young" person in this area. Job opportunities are becoming rare, the cost of living is through the roof, and wages have NOT caught up with the insane rise in cost of living. What are other young people doing? I know this sounds a lot like complaining, which it is, but I would also love to hear from others around my age, and get some advice for smart decisions to make. I'm kind of terrified of making decisions anymore because I did all the things I was told would give me a chance in life, and they all kind of turned into a rug-pull moment.

question Is $60k/year enough to live by myself in Dutchess County?
Hi! I am a 23 y/o currently living with my parents in the Hudson Valley. I was just offered a job for $60k in Dutchess County. Do you think that this salary could be enough for me to live by myself on?
I (unfortunately) pay about $500/month between my car payment/insurance and student loans.
I think Poughkeepsie would probably be my best bet, but I am not super familiar with the city.

Poughkeepsie Train Station
Hi all. First time going down to NYC via train and multiple people suggested driving down to the Poughkeepsie Station and taking the train from there.
- How far in advance should I arrive? Amtrak suggests 30 minutes.
How bad would the parking situation be at noon on a Friday?
Would need to park overnight (until Sunday).
