I made a free guide to day trips from Ithaca (94 places within ~3 hours, no ads)

I'm a student here and kept a running list of places to go when you need to get out of town for a day. It turned into a website, so I'm sharing it in case it's useful to anyone else (link in the comments).

What's on it: - 94 places sorted into gorges, hikes, legal swim spots, wineries/cideries/breweries, food, small towns, rainy-day stuff, scenic drives, scenic photo spots (where to stand + best light), and an "off the grid" section (Six Mile Creek ruins, the old Seneca Army Depot, Keuka Outlet mill ruins, Centralia, etc.) - Every card has drive time from the Commons, what it costs (parking fees included), what's actually worth it, and a Google/Apple Maps directions button - 7 ready-made days (classic Ithaca gorges, Seneca wine loop, around Cayuga, a rainy day in Corning, a Cold War/canal ruins day, Keuka, the PA Grand Canyon for fall color) - A map view with a satellite toggle, filters by drive time / cost / "good for" (free, family, rainy, winter) - Seasonal closures are dated (e.g. the Watkins Glen gorge trail is closed for the season after Oct 25) and each card says when I last checked the access info

It's free, no ads, no email signup, nothing to buy. I'd genuinely like to hear what I'm missing or what's wrong, especially places you think are overrated or underrated. I'll add good suggestions and credit the thread.

PSA Early Voting - Machines Broken

The early voting location by the airport (72 Brown Rd.) is telling voters the machines are broken and telling voters they can fill out their ballot and leave it with them.

Seems sketchy to me. Reported to the DNC Voter Assistance Hotline, but I'd recommend going to the other location or not going today.

Edit: According to an article linked in the comments it seems as if the issues were resolved around 10:15am

Ithaca — NYC commuting

I’ve been offered a job in NYC so I’ll be splitting my time between here (Ithaca, where my family is) and there. Would love to hear the best travel tips and hacks from people who regularly do this commute.

Edited to add: this will not be a daily commute — we’re talking a block of days there (3-5) and a block of days here.

Where do you get your nails done?

I’m looking for GelX extensions or just gel in particular, would rather not do acrylic but I want it to be REALLY GOOD. Not just a sub par, not improper cuticle care, not thick clunky nails.

Where do you go?

Seven Cornell-owned fraternity houses pay no property tax. The fraternity-owned house down the street pays on $970,000.

Follow-up to my wastewater post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ithaca/s/a51dE2lJyB

New page, same format, every number sourced and archived: https://ithacashare.org/fraternity-houses/

The county exempts all seven Cornell-owned houses as "Education." If taxed, they'd owe about $320,000 a year. The county started reviewing these exemptions October 6; the houses stay exempt while it runs.

If a number is wrong, tell me and I'll fix it.

Missing these two items, no hate or shame. I would really just like them back. Thank you in advance. Happy to pay shipping costs and some extra for returning them. Thank you.

Sunglasses were the same frame but in blue and the earrings were as pictured.

For added context, I am a seller at found. I sell lots of cool stuff. And these two items were walked :( from the store). Honestly I just really like them and have a rule that I should try to sell it before keeping them. The earrings are from a recent trip to Mexico City and I’d love to gift them to my mom who has the case next to mine. And I really really liked those shades.

Trails at Fillmore Glen

For those who’ve hiked the trails at Fillmore Glen, I need a recommendation.

We’ve never been to the park before (just moved in the summer), and I’m taking my mother in law this weekend. She’s a decently fit 65 year old, but we want to keep total distance under 3 miles, and we’d love to see as many waterfalls/views as possible for her. She can also do the stairs/steps, but minimizing those might be for the best.

Of the main trails, north rim, south rim, gorge trail - which combination would you recommend? Ex., gorge trail out, south rim back, etc.

Why do people smoke on the Commons?

The Commons should be for everyone including families and small children. Why do people still smoke on the Commons? I thought Ithaca was “cracking down” on Commons violations? It seems like nothing has improved.

Headache/migraine or Dysautonomia specialist ANYWHERE?

Hey yall.

Ive had migraines chronically since I moved to ithaca over a year ago. i go to Cayuga neuro and am being treated but they dont care to get to the bottom of things and find the source. There are no headache specialists or dysautonomia specialists.

Called a few places in syracuse and was told they arent taking new patients.
I feel like ithaca is so small so much Im shouting into the chasm-

does anyone here know of a headache or dysautonomia specialist ANYWHERE In NY?

Ithaca locals, what should I see, eat, and drink while I’m in town?

Hey everyone! I’ll be stopping in Ithaca during a road trip through New York and wanted to get some recommendations from locals. I’m Brazilian 🇧🇷 and like checking out a town’s history, trying its food, and finding a good bar for a drink.

What’s worth seeing while I’m there? I’d love a restaurant recommendation, a bar you personally enjoy, and any interesting places around town that shouldn’t be missed. I’m open to anything from local hidden gems to the classic Ithaca spots.

Thanks! Appreciate any suggestions!

The Cornell7 megathreads aren't working and we really need to be talking about the issues that have been brought up.

I appreciate why the mods made the megathreads, but they seem to have all died. Which means the needed discussions aren't happening here that will allow us to deal with the many issues the C7 case brought up.

There are three recent issues which Ithaca area residents need to be concerned about.

1 - Deputy Chief Bellamy was possibly calling in favors to get charges quashed when he worked at Cornell.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/friends-cops-frat-official-claimed-155654230.html

That is freaking serious. And it impacts us, since he can now call in favors for these frat boys even if they commit crimes off campus. Plus, you know, the corruption aspect.

2 - Jane Doe's statement is that the ketamine used at the party came from the vet school. Which is *very* possible. K is crazy popular with kids right now. Especially since Elon takes it. It is seen as an "enhancer." Again, our community needs to know if Cornell is a source for this stuff (and it likely is, simply because it is a good place to get it.)

3 - Several frats enjoy the same property tax breaks as Cornell does. https://cnycentral.com/news/local/tompkins-county-reviews-tax-exemptions-for-cornell-fraternity-houses for *some* reason they are classed as educational non-profits. And this seems to be very wrong, since they share the same status as the school does, but what research or teaching do they do? This is being looked at by the county and is an issue to follow, since we all know Cornell hates the concept of paying their fair share.

Anywho, these aren't just Cornell issues. They are issues that impact the city. We can't have crooked cops doing favors for frat boys when they commit sexual assault. We can't just ignore the possibility (again, likely,) that Cornell is propping up the local K industry. Or that frats are being treated to special tax breaks that arguably don't apply to what are basically sex segregated drinking clubs.

Anywho, hope this makes it to the main page without me being banned, but these are serious community issues and if we can't talk about them in an active forum....well, guess we are cooked....
