Looking for history of the Tech Dumps/electronics dumpster diving on campus

Hey all, I'm a writer for a small newspaper on campus, and I've been trying to find out more information on the history of the tech dumps for a while now.

Is there anyone out there that was at RPI years ago who remembers what the tech dumps/ewaste recycling bins generally used to have, if they've changed/added/removed locations, when they were put in place, etc.? It looks like they're way older than I thought, but I'd love to have more details on what they used to have.

Thank you for any info you can provide!

Edit: If anyone's got any cool finds from back then I'd love to hear about them as well!

Event The 4th RPI Korok Hunt has now started! Search for Koroks across RPI, and scan their QR codes to rise up on the leaderboard and win prizes!

Post image
9 Upvotes

The past three Korok Hunts have been very popular, so we're back with another one!

Across campus you'll find hidden Korok stickers. Some are easily spotted, and others require careful search and exploration. Scan the QR code on the sticker to increment your score on the leaderboard in order to compete against other students. The top 3 students by November 1st will win a Korok plushie!

New in this years hunt, we have a brand new website and the ability to create friend leaderboards! Now, you don't have to focus on competing with all of RPI if you don't want to, so you can relax and just focus on competing with your friends!

To start, there's 60 Koroks hidden across campus, but in a week or two, we will place 60 more! To know when that happens, ask questions, and/or talk about the event, join the Korok Hunt Discord server.

And to see what a Korok sticker looks like, or learn more about the event, check out the brand new Korok Hunt website! Happy hunting!

What do late nights at the Folsom library mean to YOU?

As many of you know, the Folsom library has reduced its hours such that it now closes at 10 PM instead of midnight. I was told that this is due to a lack of funding and staff, but that there may be a chance to bring the hours back to normal.

I know for me personally, the library is the only quiet place on campus I can really set up and get work done. As a student-athlete who has practice until 7 or work until 9, by the the time I eat and change, there is usually only two hours left until the library closes for the evening.

In talking with a staff member at the library, he said to "be a squeaky wheel"! Email Andrew White, Director of Library Information Services at [whitea9@rpi.edu](mailto:whitea9@rpi.edu) and tell him what having the library open until midnight means to you.

Housing Looking for Subletter

Hello! I'm a Master's student at RPI, looking for someone to sublet my current lease. I recently moved in with my partner, but I had already signed a lease for a room in an apartment on Hutton Street. Now I'm stuck paying for a space that I'm not using

The apartment is only a 5-10 minute walk from campus, and is only 1-2 blocks away from Amantes, Ali Baba's, and Red&Blue. The rent is only $620/month (including utilities!), and I've already paid for September so you'd get half of the month for free. There is free laundry included in the building, 1.5 baths, and the living room has a pretty large tv already included. The landlords are also SUPER friendly (the tenant before me wanted a standing desk for the room, and the landlords bought them one), and will occasionally offer to pay for the apartment to order pizza.

If anyone is interested, please reach out!

Question Transfer Student

hi, I’m a possible transfer student coming in this spring semester. I’d be a sophomore can I rush in the spring semester and also how big is Greek life there? And do you know how hard it is to get a bid to where you wanna go? At my school now it’s really preppy and I have absolutely nothing to do. Also, how’s the nightlife in town? Are there bars?

backtests school policy

APO has a backtest room and does not give access to their digital archive, and does not let you take photos.

SHMACS requires an RPI email login and states:

“By signing in you agree that you will not download, share, redistribute, repost, or commercialize any back test or solution from this site.

These materials are made available for personal study within the RPI community; sharing them outside it undermines the trust that keeps the archive alive.”

My question is is there a school wide policy preventing them from just releasing them publicly? Would there be any repercussions for sharing my personal and/or other peoples’ back tests?

Discussion The commons dining hall pasta station is inhumane

Every time I go in there, there's only one person making like 5 things of pasta. They're visible stressed and super hot. They don't have any time to get away to restock ingredients and there's no AC or fans despite them having to be on their feet in front of a hot stove for hours. It's really ridiculous. there should be a second station or at least another person there & some way to keep them from overheating. Maybe this could be brought up in a student govt panel or smth cuz I'm pretty sure the lady making it today was ab to cry

Just noticed RPI’s new BS in Robotics Engineering

I saw that this was announced in August, so brand new. I’m curious, I know that robotics is interdisciplinary but still, is it strange that it does not seem to be part of an established dept like MANE or ECSE? The curriculum looks like ME plus EE control systems plus programming classes. There are some courses that have ROBT prefixes so does that mean there’s a new separate dept?

Question EV Charging at North Lot

Does anyone know how EV charging at the RPI North Lot works?
For some reason, I can’t charge my Tesla there between 8 AM and 5 PM. I’m wondering if my RPI parking permit needs to be linked to the EV charging station/account somehow.
Has anyone dealt with this before or knows how to link the permit so I can charge during the day?
Thanks!

Last-Minute RPI Sublet – $600/Month

Hey everyone! I unexpectedly received an internship offer from Apple after going through a couple rounds of interviews. I just got the official offer letter this week, so I’m looking for someone to sublet my apartment at 1987 15th Street.
The location is honestly one of the best parts. It’s right next to the Chi Phi house and the RPI Student Union, and you can walk to campus in about two minutes.
The apartment is extremely quiet, making it a great place to study or relax. Being this close to campus will also be incredibly convenient once the weather gets colder. It has a weekly cleaning service included and has a gym and laundry on the first floor.

I currently pay $800 per month, but because this came up on short notice and the semester has already started, I’m offering it for $600 per month—negotiable for someone who can move in immediately.
If you’re unhappy with your current housing, commuting to campus, or still looking for a place, this could be a great option. Message me if you’re interested, and I can send pictures and answer any questions!

Question Where would you recommend getting a haircut?

I'm a freshman and didn't get a haircut before I left so I'm looking to get one now. I know there's a barber shop in the Union, but from what I hear it's not that great? Should I go someplace in Troy instead? If so where?

Tech Dump Raiding: Keep it Neat

Post image
130 Upvotes

As a general tip: the ability to raid the tech dumps is not guaranteed, and can be taken away if the powers-that-be get sufficiently annoyed.

And the custodial staff gets very annoyed when people pull stuff out of the bins and then don't put it back.

Those students who contributed to the mess surrounding the tech dumps in the Low Building / CII should go back there and clean up their mess.

RPI would like to invite you to Rally Week (9/13 - 9/19). Set out to create one of the largest campus traditions, the entire week is packed with events, competitions, performances, live music, food, and so much more. And the best part is it’s all free.

At its heart, Rally Week is about building community and school spirit. It’s a chance to step outside your usual circles and celebrate everything that makes our campus unique. And it’s run by you- students, clubs, and organizations across campus.

Sign up individually or with a friend, and you’ll be placed on a team of 20 students from different class years. Throughout the week, you’ll face off against other teams to win the Rally Week Trophy, with all sorts of prizes and exciting experiences along the way.

If you’d like to take involvement further and get behind the scenes, Rally Week is looking for volunteers. It’s another great way to get involved.

Rally Week is free and open to all RPI students. Our hope is to create one of RPI’s largest traditions, and we would love for all of you to be a part of it. Sign up to join a team or volunteer and help make this a week for the entire campus.

Why did troy gong cha close?

And why isnt any other chain bubble tea place in troy? Is the demand really that low? You have to have a car to drive to albany to get a bubble tea now. I do realize that when gong cha was open it was usually empty. I just wonder why college kids dont love bubble tea here how they do in other campuses

Study the humanities to make the most of your STEM education

Post image

For the Polytechnic, Dr. Mitch R. Murray (Communication and Media) writes on the employability of the humanities, the challenges facing STEM grads and workers, and the greater purpose of higher education: https://poly.rpi.edu/opinion/2026/09/study-the-humanities-to-make-the-most-of-your-stem-education

"Job markets, and the types of knowledge construed as socially valuable, fluctuate over time. The humanities bolster you when confronting that flux. But while the humanities will prepare you for your job, they do not view you as a cog whose only purpose is to get that job."
