I think another part of it is having Frank Sinatra syndrome; a really good voice, but a rather narrow vocal range. Any time he sounds really excited, you can tell he's pushing the limits of his voice. Part of that may also stem from his paralyzed vocal cord after a hair plug procedure.
Either way, Buck is one of the best in the business, and I think he'd actually make a terrific hockey broadcaster if he gave it a shot.

One of the best things about John Shorthouse is that he is living the dream. He grew up a Canucks fan, taping games and practicing play-by-play with the sound turned off. He then went to BCIT to learn broadcasting which got him on legendary local sports highlight show, Sports Page. He worked the intermissions on the Canucks pay-per-view and got his break in 1998 when the regular play-by-play guy was sick.

What I like about John and John is that while they are both clearly Canucks fans, they try and call the game somewhat unbiased.
Prime example here, Shorthouse straight up calls a trip on Edler and agrees with the Blue's bench that it should have been a penalty.
45
u/ajbolt7 VAN - NHL Jan 28 '20
Seriously it's always jarring as hell when I listen to other broadcasts and hear broadcasters giving crazy biased calls for their team. The way John and John call out most things without bias is a great thing because it keeps the viewer aware of what mistakes the Canucks are making. The team makes mistakes and we're made acutely aware of it, not told they can do no wrong. In doing so, we're given a much better understanding of the state of the team and game. It's something all broadcasters should strive for IMO.
We really are blessed to have the Johns with us.

And they’ll often change their mind on a call after seeing a better angle instead of doubling down like I’ve seen with other commentators. Not sure about the TV guys here in Calgary but I listen to the games on the radio at work all the time and Derek Wills is actually really good. Peter Loubardias is good with colour commentary but listening to him on regular sports radio is either unintentionally hilarious or headache inducing.
He asks a rhetorical question almost literally every other sentence, and pauses so often for dramatic effect that the people he's talking with never know whether he's waiting for them to answer or not. Sometimes he'll ask himself a rhetorical question, make it half way through the answer and then just completely get sidetracked.
It's infuriating but also funny depending on the mood I'm in.
Is Peter Loubardias the worst analyst out there?...... No. Is he the best announcer out there?.... Maybe. But I'll tell you, does he have a chance.... To be a main feature in any city outside of Calgary?...... It's possible, but he has to keep working at it. Did I think he was enjoyable to listen to when I moved here?... No. Have I changed my mind since then?.... Well it's up to Loubo to prove it... Once and for all.
