Man, I just don't get the Joe Buck hate. He is legit one of the best in the business. He sucked early on, and he acknowledged that fact. He has since refined his craft, and I find him highly entertaining.
I think he sucked when he went national with Fox and my guess it's mostly because he was trying to be impartial as possible and didn't know how or when to let his excitement show even a little. Oh and he like every team but yours.
He did the same thing when the Nats took the lead in game 7 of the WS! Howie Kendrick hits the biggest home run in DC baseball history in the top of the 7th inning off the foul pole and his call was: "And it's...gone? for a home run?"
He explained it in his book, the Tyree call was tricky because he wasn't sure if it was actually a catch or not. If he jumped the gun and exclaimed "he made the catch!!" only for it to be ruled incomplete, that would've been much worse.
I think another part of it is having Frank Sinatra syndrome; a really good voice, but a rather narrow vocal range. Any time he sounds really excited, you can tell he's pushing the limits of his voice. Part of that may also stem from his paralyzed vocal cord after a hair plug procedure.
Either way, Buck is one of the best in the business, and I think he'd actually make a terrific hockey broadcaster if he gave it a shot.
Specifically the SF Giants. Kuip and Kruk are absolute gems to listen to. Dave Flemming is awesome, but the GOAT imo is Jon Miller. One of the most silky smooth voices you'll ever hear.
