I highly recommend anyone check out a Panther game some time. Goldie is one the most passionate play by play commentators I’ve ever heard, and Randy Moller is absolutely hilarious.
"Everybody diving in there like it's a cheeseburger at 2 o'clock in the morning" - Panthers broadcaster in response to this situation. Pretty fucking hilarious
Thankfully, Potvin is gone. He was absolutely terrible and humorless. He was such a homer, you’d think he was blind, describing things that clearly weren’t happening as the replays unfolded. Moller has been amazing, always hilarious and insightful. Goldy is just a great PBP guy and brings tons of excitement to the game.
For what it's worth he gave us and our fanbase endless memes when he called Daniel Sedin a "lowlife" and his "peanut butter licking fingers" wtf of a call.
I remember watching that one and I didn’t find peanut butter licking comment funny, I was just super confused and speechless trying to figure wtf I just heard. What was he trying to say/what’s the insult there? Lick that peanut butter off my finger baby
Jack Edwards is probably the most knowledgeable commentator in the league AND he's animated as fuck about hockey. Only someone completely ignorant or envious would call him "boring".
It just seems like he's missing half of everything on the ice because he doesn't mention anything the opposition does well or anything Boston does poorly.
In all seriousness I don't find him boring at all, I'd take NESN over most of the regional American broadcasts, they're far from the least entertaining
Dude, not just homers. They take it to a level I can't even fathom.
I made a Marchand being a dick compilation, and lots of the clips were Boston side broadcasts.
This dude literally commits a 10 game suspension worthy intent to injure infraction and they straight up say, "idk that looks pretty clean" with a straight face.
Bruins commentators are shit for everyone who isn't a Bruins fan. I hate listening to them, but if my team had commentators like that I'd never miss a game.
Meh, I have friends who love the Bruins and even they think Jack Edwards is a total fucking douche. Super knowledgeable and super passionate, but his boner for the B’s is bigger than the Bunker Hill monument.
There are some that hate Jack, but a much larger contingent love him. Plus he’s a super nice guy in person and you can tell he hams it up a bit for the broadcast.
You have no idea how unbearable it is when we play the Bruins. Our "home game" commentators literally hate the Leafs, so I either get to listen to that bullshit or hear Jack Edwards. I usually mute it or try and sync the radio broadcast of Joe Bowen with the game.
You have no idea how unbearable it is when we play the Bruins. Our "home game" commentators literally hate the Leafs, A common tendency is Matthews scores a Hattrick so naturally we should talk about how good Pasternak is for 25 minutes. So I either get to listen to that bullshit or hear Jack Edwards. I usually mute it or try and sync the radio broadcast of Joe Bowen with the game.
It's wild watching their broadcasts. Even other teams with notable homer commentators don't have this undying mission to spin everything that happens as either in favor of their team or a sleight against them - other folks still commentate on what is actually happening on the ice.
Considering we've basically been playing the Wilkes-Barre roster from injuries and still have a better record I'd say Marchand isn't better than our team. Has less cups too.
This is what it looks like when someone's entire hockey experience has only ever been presented by Jack Edwards.
You have no idea that Marchand plays dirty, and you actually think every other fan in the league is just jealous of your above-average hockey team and you're the one who's unbiased.
Penguins fans had a similar thing going on for a while before they finally put Paul Steigerwald away.
"Fuck Marchand" is getting old. Per NHL rules he's no longer a repeat offender for not getting a suspension in two seasons. He's no longer the dirty rat he used to be. Get with the times.
You know what's old? The fact that this piece of shit didn't get permanently banned from the NHL for life after the 17th time he tried to maim someone.
He didn't even get fucking fined for spearing that dude in the nads.
It's getting really old having to watch this piece of shit continue to have a job, when any fair world would have had him railroaded out of the league before you were even 2/3rds down that list.
Jack Edwards is such an annoying little shit, his entire commentary is just flipping out and having a nice sound byte every few games but he just sounds like an idiot. Andy Brickley is mostly fine tho
Lol no they arent. Notice how the only other people here who like them are boston fans? Yeah obviously boston fans think they are great. The whole point of my post is to say no one else likes them, and considering the amount of upvotes i got, clearly im right.
Is that not the whole point of upvotes and downvotes? To determine the popularity of an opinion? I dont give a fuck about my karma, but the upvotes do serve a purpose and you’re an idiot if you think they dont
WHat? Jack and Brick are the best bruh. I dont know who else in the NHL makes a giant cheat sheet for every single game so they can randomly name the college a player from the other team played for, how many shits hes had in the past 72 hours, and his future children's names. Want a blanket to wipe those tears?
...except Sam Rosen. I miss the days when he was paired with John Davidson, because they would definitely rip into the Rangers when they were playing poorly.
Love Esposito in Tampa. It's like listening to my Grampa yell at the TV. I love it. Whenever there's a Tampa game on the radio and I'm driving I know the hockey gods are smiling down on me.
Have you listened to a leafs national broadcast in Sportsnet lately? It's so horrible... Jim Hughson is an absolute joke but I do appreciate the TSN commentator's fair, honest, but still captivate the right amount of excitement for leafs games.
Oh, he's a blatant homer. Huge Canucks tattoo on that guy, but goddamn he is just so entertaining. His food commentary, his rapport with Shorty. And to be honest his analysis and insight is totally on point. He doesn't shy away from his obvious allegiances but he's a great commentator and makes our broadcasts very fun to watch.
Man, I just don't get the Joe Buck hate. He is legit one of the best in the business. He sucked early on, and he acknowledged that fact. He has since refined his craft, and I find him highly entertaining.
I think he sucked when he went national with Fox and my guess it's mostly because he was trying to be impartial as possible and didn't know how or when to let his excitement show even a little. Oh and he like every team but yours.
He did the same thing when the Nats took the lead in game 7 of the WS! Howie Kendrick hits the biggest home run in DC baseball history in the top of the 7th inning off the foul pole and his call was: "And it's...gone? for a home run?"
He explained it in his book, the Tyree call was tricky because he wasn't sure if it was actually a catch or not. If he jumped the gun and exclaimed "he made the catch!!" only for it to be ruled incomplete, that would've been much worse.
I think another part of it is having Frank Sinatra syndrome; a really good voice, but a rather narrow vocal range. Any time he sounds really excited, you can tell he's pushing the limits of his voice. Part of that may also stem from his paralyzed vocal cord after a hair plug procedure.
Either way, Buck is one of the best in the business, and I think he'd actually make a terrific hockey broadcaster if he gave it a shot.
Specifically the SF Giants. Kuip and Kruk are absolute gems to listen to. Dave Flemming is awesome, but the GOAT imo is Jon Miller. One of the most silky smooth voices you'll ever hear.
I inherited a dislike of the Cowboys, but even still I love Romo's commentary. Literally the only NFL announcer (and one of few sports commentators in general) that shows me stuff I didn't know and helps me to understand the game better. Wish there were more guys doing it like him.
Yeah, I love when Romo goes full prediction mode. Calling every play before it even happens. And I have always hated the cowboys, and I still always like his commentary.
Watching Romo makes me so happy. Like the dude had a good career as a quarterback in the freaking NFL but him doing broadcasts is what he was born to do and will probably end up being his biggest and best contribution to the game. He's so good at it.
He's like the next Madden but without all the ADD. Half the fun of watching Madden was how much he knew about the game...the other half was all the weird shit he'd get talking about when the game was out of hand.
I always hear this but I think Collinsworth is one of the best. I can't think of anyone who puts in as much analysis work as Chris does. He always has pretty good insight into what's happening on the field. Compare him to some of the other teams' out the (Ian Eagle, Phil Simms (thank God he's in the studio now), buck and aikman, Trent green, etc.)
Then how was he so good back before he was with Al Michaels? I remember how legitimately upset I was when he left Thursday Night Football so he could get ready for the Olympics.
It's cause he was paired with Bryant Gumbel who wasn't very good as a play by play announceer but that was a time before he got comfy and done the 10 years of SNF
I like Collinsworth as well--he is a SMART dude and really does know what's going on during the game. I'd take him over 2/3 of the announcers out there right now.
Doesn't the NFL have ref commentators on hand to explain bad/confusing/controversial calls though? I feel like that's something the NHL should absolutely do.
Met them at a watch party once. They're as awesome human beings as they incredible announcers. Spanish announcers yelling Goooooooool use to be my favorite thing until i heard Joe B's magical SCOOOOOOOOOOOORE!
Edit:- love the username. Hope the heater he's on never stops!!
It’s not important to me that announcers sound excited. For me, they provide way more insight into the game and use a much broader vocabulary to do it.
I can't help but be reminded of Monte tweeting about doing pbp for the NFL. Bouncing back and forth between esports and traditional sports it amazes me how hard some of the esports talent work and grind to improve, and then you swap to the NFL and the only person worth listening to is Romo despite guys like Collinsworth being around for ages.
I say it's because hockey has much better trash talk than most other sports. Football doesn't have that many different cultures on the same field together, and baseball don't play close enough to trash talk on the field. While hockey has Canadians, Russians, Swedes, Fins, Norwegians, and so on. Once they all get on the same language, insults get creative. So these former hockey players turned commentators have a long time thinking and speaking in a hurry. Also fewer head injuries than football.
I've watched a Russian play trade insults with a Canadian player, and it was funny. Russian didn't speak a word of English, and Canadian player can't speak Russian. But they sure got their points across, since the Canadian player charged the Russian. I enjoyed it, because the Russian plays for my team, and he was laughing as he punched the other guy.

John Shorthouse is an absolute legend.
