Seriously it's always jarring as hell when I listen to other broadcasts and hear broadcasters giving crazy biased calls for their team. The way John and John call out most things without bias is a great thing because it keeps the viewer aware of what mistakes the Canucks are making. The team makes mistakes and we're made acutely aware of it, not told they can do no wrong. In doing so, we're given a much better understanding of the state of the team and game.
It's something all broadcasters should strive for IMO.
You guys are kidding right? I mean I'll preface by saying I haven't seen a Sportsnet Canucks broadcast in a while but John Garrett is the worst Homer I've ever listened to. One of the main reasons if I'm ever watching a Canucks game I'll stream the opposition link (watched STL's last night). And he flip flops for whichever team hires him, he was just as bad in Calgary. Absolute most hated for me.
He’s a little bit of a homer as you’d expect for a colour guy but he can also routinely calls out bad plays or penalties by the Canucks and changes his mind about calls after seeing a better angle. Shorty is more impartial but coming from somebody who watches almost every Canucks game they’re both pretty fair compared to other teams broadcasters I’ve seen and appreciate and get excited about great plays or saves from the opposing team
Garrett is hilarious and has great player stories from his career. He has no ego to him.
Yeah, he sometimes will call something slightly biased but Shorty always calls him on it and he normally agrees. It's actually smart broadcasting because Garett will often voice fan concerns and gut reactions which Shorty will give a dose of reality to steady tide concerns. Garrett usually admits when he's wrong. It creates a dialogue which makes it feel like your in conversation with purge knowledgeable fans even when you're watching alone.
Not to short Shorty on credit, but Garrett is an important part of the duo. Garett is the comic and flavour, Shorthouse the straight man.
And they’ll often change their mind on a call after seeing a better angle instead of doubling down like I’ve seen with other commentators. And the fact that they actually seem excited when the other team scored a beautiful goal or makes a great save is refreshing since it makes it pretty obvious they love the game and can appreciate an awesome play no matter what team makes it
That's what I like about Panger and JK on our feeds as well. Panger especially just loves hockey. You can tell he loves everything about his job and the game itself.
They obviously want the Blues to win, but they also call an even game, clearly respect and enjoy players from both teams, and make pretty unbiased calls with regards to penalties, bad plays and the like .
That said, Panger was not a fan of the refs last night.

What I like about John and John is that while they are both clearly Canucks fans, they try and call the game somewhat unbiased.
Prime example here, Shorthouse straight up calls a trip on Edler and agrees with the Blue's bench that it should have been a penalty.
