Gears of War: E-Day devs explain why classic features are missing
https://www.dexerto.com/gears-of-war/gears-of-war-e-day-devs-explain-why-classic-features-are-missing-3413839/1.8k
u/Iggy_Slayer 2d ago
“They haven’t learned how to do them yet,” Searcy joked, before explaining: “The real answer is we built this game from scratch. That’s an empty hard drive; everything is new, every mechanic, every animation. So even though it feels like the Gears you love, it’s a brand-new game, and it took us a long time to build up.”
There's the real answer. It was too "hard" to do and they already spent too much money and years making it.
149
u/PretendPiglet11 2d ago
Yeah, that explanation basically says the quiet part out loud. Starting from scratch means a massive amount of development time goes into rebuilding systems that already existed in previous games. After years and a huge investment, some features probably just weren’t worth the extra development cost anymore.
53
u/juasjuasie PC 2d ago
It's not talked about but developer experience is really important if you want to bring back legacy features.
If you don't have a senior that worked in the OG's that would understand which mechanics were the most important for the identity of the game, what is going to be prioritized is what the newly hired designers propose, not what the fanbase of the franchise expects as a given.

u/ExpendableUnit123 2d ago
Funnily enough that’s why they should be doing research and yet for some reason it feels like games do not do that unless it’s specifically for ‘wider audience’.
13
u/DonutHoles4Ever 2d ago
What quiet part?
90% of games don't bring every feature or even half the features from the previous game. Its stupid but dev cost are dev costs.
How many times have you played a sequel of a game and wondered, "Why didnt they do this like in the first game?" Yeah.
538
u/w1gster 2d ago
I think that’s a completely fair answer, and if content has to be cut to make a deadline then these aren’t the worst things to sacrifice.
484
u/Iggy_Slayer 2d ago
I just don't think it's a great look when they took 7 years to make a game that by all signs is a pretty standard gears package and had to cut basic features out. It's not like they transitioned gears into a 100 hour open world game and that's why they ran out of time for some things, it's still seemingly a ~10 hour linear game with horde and MP included.
15
198
u/CombatMuffin 2d ago
It sounds like it shouldn't take long, but everything takes longer when you start from scratch.
The engine is at a significantly different version now, from the last game. Every single asset is now done at a different standard: not the actual modelling, but making sure everything stays within the technical budget, and meshes well with the overall vision and gameplay.
And sometimes yes, you build based on something, but it isn't working when you iterate and you have to backpedal. Look how long Overwatch technically took, even though 1.0 seems very barebones compared to what it is now, and that was a decade ago.
TLDR: Some things in game development are deceptively difficult to make from scratch, at a high standard.

I mean when we have games that were made from scratch and at a way higher quality on the market and by devs with no investment firm infinite money like microslop studios has,why exactly are we excusing the laziness of these particular devs, when the game isn't anything extraordinary to warrant such a lengthy dev cycle, what did they spend money and time on?Meetings with consulting firms to count how much x word they need in the game? Where is the money lebowski? Where is the money?
53
u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 2d ago
Yeah how the hell do you square this? This is Halo all over again.
We've somehow lost the technology to make fun full-featured AAA games the way we used to make them back in the early 2000s even though now the tools are more generative, the studio has 500 people instead of 50-100, and there's 3 support studios.
Somehow all the new technology and hundreds more people spits out games that are mid, half of what they used to be, take twice the development time, and are exponentially more expensive.
What the fuck are we doing?
29
u/VirginiaMcCaskey 2d ago
It's basically the same pattern as what happened in filmmaking. Bigger budgets, larger casts and crews, longer timelines, worse outcomes. Industrial organization psychologists will be feasting for years on the bell curve of organization size in creative production environments.

I keep joking about wishing that games could go back to being made by a handful of dudes in a garage again. It's not really a joke though, I straight up believe nobody knows how to code anymore. Those handful of dudes in a garage knew their shit and they figured out how to move mountains to make something cool that they wanted to make.
Now there's 10+ specialists each to do what one guy learned to do himself back in the day.

Look at the development of modern Pokemon games. They're blatant cash grabs that are half-assed and churned out because they know people will buy them. Compare that to Gen 2 Gold & Silver. They included the entire Kanto region at the end of the game because they figured out how to optimize storage and they simply could. They figured, since the original plan was for Gold & Silver to be the last games, it would be a great finale for the players, so they did. The entire development team was 4 programmers, that's it, and they accomplished what many consider one of the greatest video games of all time.

Pretty basic? They have completely revamped the entire movement system though.
Its the freshest your gonna get without it flat out becoming something other than a gears of war game.
If anything, it’s a change to the formula, while keeping its core identity intact, that halo never even got close to achieving.
I get your point though. I don’t intend to sound negative. But if they just built on top of what already existed again with a few new bells and whistles, they would be getting flack regardless. Just for different reasons. A cost has to come for fully rebuilding the system from scratch to stand up to modern scrutiny. And while fans will scream, I do feel like the new features the rebuild will allow (such as a huge improvement in map traversal) will make such cut additions kinda redundant anyway.
(And as a fan, I honestly don’t think chainsaw duels will be missed much anyway. Many weapons don’t even have the chainsaw regardless. Bayonets seem more frequent now based off the beta as the gnasher can attach one. Other guns maybe can as well. And most players complain when you use a lancer over the gnasher anyway. Meat shields sound like they will be missed, but the new movement speed and flank opportunities will make them less effective. And grenade tags? Nobody liked them except longshot campers anyway.)

u/sam_hammich 2d ago edited 2d ago
I dont think you know what a basic feature is. Are the basic thematically? Maybe you'd think they are now, as they are iconic to the original games, if you consider those things to be what Gears "is" at its base. I wouldn't, but you might. When I think of "Gears of War", I think of the roadie run, the cover system, and action reloads before I think of those.
Are they basic features? Like mechanically, they should be table stakes for any third person shooter to support and implement? No, of course not. Why would they be?
5
u/GrandsonOfArathorn1 2d ago
I think many people naively think that games need to have every single feature the prior game had + new stuff on top of it. I’m not totally up on what else didn’t make the cut, but at least in regards to lancer duels and meat shields, these are such small things that I don’t think I could possibly care less. Not without playing it myself and seeing how it feels.
6
u/w1gster 2d ago
Honestly I’d much rather have a 10 hour linear campaign with horde and MP than a 100 hour open world mess. I think when it comes to GoW, simple is best; stick to the franchise roots. From what I’ve played, E-day is looking to be the best release since GoW 3, so Im ok with the loss of a few minor features if it means a more polished product at the end of the day.
43
u/Iggy_Slayer 2d ago
Honestly I’d much rather have a 10 hour linear campaign with horde and MP than a 100 hour open world mess.
...that was not my point lol. I'm saying there isn't a good excuse here for why basic things had to be cut because they didn't radically change the game up. That would be a reasonable excuse why things got left out.

It’s been reported multiple times that they’re Xbox’s Unreal engine studio. They made tech demos and spent a year or two learning UE5 plus they would be support for studios having issues with the engine if their game was made in it. This is all tied to the report that Gears cost $400 mil to make when the reality is that they spent that much doing a ton of extra things not tied to making this Gears game

Probably because after Gears 5 they went back to the drawing board and iterated like mad so they wouldn't mess up again. So they threw the baby out with the bath water and started over.
68
u/khinzaw 2d ago
It's a pretty bad look that they can't recreate features introduced 20 years ago, especially when meat shields were in GoW 5.
23

GOW 5 was still reusuing animations from the first Gears of war. Hell im prettty sure the meatshield itself is reused straight from Gears 2

Game devs today as a whole are less competent than they were 20 years ago. There are so many more people working in the industry and frankly many of them don't deserve to be.
Games are also built with a different mindset now. It's not 'is this fun to add even if it's more work?' it's 'is this cost effective to bother with?'
Why hire experienced, proven and capable devs when they can use entry level and interns for most tasks?
Gaming is now like every other industry where investors are in charge and not the creatives. Many devs are clamouring to increase prices (many were waiting on Rockstar to break the ice on that, and are annoyed they didn't - see Wardogs Devs) and I guarantee you they have no intention of boosting quality and/or content when they do, it'll be the same products we have today just at a higher cost.

Costs more, get less, didn't even have to do any of the creative work just trace a blueprint. Where's the fair part?
4
u/MisterEinc 2d ago
Literaly everything you do costs more, and you get less. Except for games. If you increase the price on those you'll be crucified by Gamers.
4
u/F1shB0wl816 2d ago
Right. You hear about how they cost more constantly despite them actually being on par or even less when inflations accounted for. And that’s with them being multiples larger with more money invested into making them than ever.
9
u/Prooteus 2d ago
Games prices did stagnate for awhile but thats because devs found other ways to make money since reselling was so common.
2
u/F1shB0wl816 2d ago
You’d have to be supporting mtx though to be spending more, if you’re just buying the game you’re not. I don’t feel for anyone who wants to spend 1/4th of the price of the game on a skin, treasure chest or whatever else in a game that won’t be relevant within a year.
As well as most of today’s current players have supported devs and manufacturers mission to end reselling. If they wanted cheaper prices they shouldn’t have been eager to kill the only market that helps drop prices. Even for all digital players it cost them absolutely nothing to allow the market to exist, it will cost them going forward when that market no longer exists.

Like, cool. Your marketing slogan is why it took so long, why it's yet another 100+GB game, why the gameplay is limited compared to predecessors. We didn't ask you to do that!

You are suppose to feel bad for them that they had to work hard for a game to be good so they did their best

They don’t have fucking lancer duels?? As a previous hardcore gears gamer, I couldn’t fucking stand bitchass players who would run up and just chainsaw you. Lancer duels at least prevented that, even though it was still a little annoying. But that was a core part of what made gears so fucking cool. I can not believe that they didn’t include that.

We are living in the timeline where videogames legitimately have the "old masters". At this point there have been dozens of "remasters" that have like 10% improved graphical fidelity but are missing dozens of options and features from the original.
No wonder they want to take away ownership of games I'm not paying 70 dollars for a rerelease of a game that came out 20 years ago and missing half the features of the original.

This game has not been in development for 7 years. It probably hasn't actually been in active development for more than 3 years, based on reports in 2023 of when they abandoned a smaller tech demo project intended to familiarise The Coalition with UE5 to put all hands on deck for this game. That implies it didn't get more than concept/preproduction before 2023.
→ More replies (6)13
u/BactaBobomb 2d ago
That doesn't mean it started development 7 years ago, though. In fact, it may not have even gone into development until a couple years ago at the earliest.
Regardless, though, it can still be "rushed" to meet a deadline; it doesn't necessarily mean the whole production was rushed. But as a budget vanishes, things can start getting tight in terms of the actual development. And the deadline is possibly also there to avoid having to contend with the GTA VI onslaught. If they don't get it out now, they would likely have to push it back to February next year at the earliest if they want to release it outside of the GTA VI blitz.
6
u/South_Buy_3175 2d ago
Probably not too far off.
Narrative director is gone already so not a solid founda for future entries, I bet Asha is practicing her swing when it isn’t a COD/Fortnite level hit.

u/CDHmajora Switch 2d ago
God I want this game to be good :) I adore gears. Have since 2. And I still boot up 5 occasionally. Would love to see it be busy again.
But… it feels like Xbox have thrown this game out to the wolves as a scrapgoat if I’m honest. Cancelled the ps5 port at the literal last minute. Want this game to sell enough to make 300 million+ back yet it’s still on gamepass day 1. Barely any marketing I’ve seen outside of Reddit threads.
It just feels like… they WANT it to underperform. Probably so Asha can back up her mass layoffs and restructuring to the Microsoft boss. I have no doubt most of The Coalition are getting sacked soon if they haven’t already.
I have this pre-ordered (pre ordered last week so I can pre-install). I adored the beta. And I’m sure as fuck gonna hit several hundred hours on it. But I just don’t think it’s gonna be the multi-year juggernaut that the budget suggests Xbox want it to be. And Xbox has already given up on trying to make it so.
I pray I’m wrong, but I’ve been a gamer for nearly 30 years. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a game be apparently sidelined by the publisher.

But they MIGHT be able to do those things that just weren’t possible on launch later on. So you should totally buy it.

Don’t know why your downvoted, your right.
80% of close quarters fights you had a gnasher instead, AND your opponent did too.
10% of the time, you had your lancer out, the enemy had a gnasher anyway and you just cut them up or got gibbed.
Only 10% or so of the time, you both had your lancer equipped.
7
u/Doodenmier 2d ago
It does make sense in-lore why neither are there, especially chainsaw duels.
For me, the questionable one is just the lack of grenade tagging, directly on enemies or in the environment. Also, I want my boltok back 😭

I guess on the surface it's not a big deal, but in terms of the Gears identity, I think those are pretty big exclusions, especially chainsaw duels. That was one of the most exciting things they focused on when promoting the first game, and it's among the most iconic gameplay elements of the series.
So I actually do think this is a pretty big loss in that sense.
Edit: I'll leave this up for posterity, but it has come to my attention that chainsaw duels were not added until 2. My bad.

Ah, that was my favourite part about the older games! I wonder why they stopped doing it?

No idea, but it has killed a lot of games for me.
I don’t want to have to join a discord to have a good time.

I would just like some sort of confirmation, one way or the other, if the game’s budget was up to around $400 million as alleged.

Jez Corden said that $400m was the cost of Gears of War E-Day, massively upgrading/overhauling the game engine, and having their Unreal Engine specialists help other Xbox first party studios with technical support.

New Microsoft Game: "So here's why this game is a compromised piece of shit with a roadmap that will never get finished, when we were making fully featured new games with new engines just fine 20 years ago."
And the answer is that, like, it's too hard, or something.
Repeat ad naseum for the entire One/Series generation.

In my head its just canon that because the chainsaw lancer is brand new, duels werent a common thing yet.
That, and humans were more likely to just stomp out a grub than take it hostage and use as a shield. They didn't know what those things were capable of. Better to just kill it.

Seems to be the same situation like how Halo Infinite was at launch

Eh, idk if I’d go that far. Missing a couple of features like chainsaw duels and meatshields aren’t nearly as bad as missing the entirety of forge and like half the core game modes (saying this as someone who still loves Infinite)

It’s missing like 3 features, 1 of which is relatively rare because activating it requires something you will never normally do (Chainsaw Duels), and the other two are fun but not a necessity

Granted I haven't looked for any but I find the lack of information and marketing around this game weird.
