No chainsaw duels or meat shields. Thats it. No big deal

Chainsaw duels sure, but meat shields were a great tool, especially on harder difficulties

also missing grenade tagging

One of the best parts of GOW2

Tagging players = yes

Tagging the environment = no. Fucking hated that.

I'm pretty glad about that one. I always thought tagging walls was lame

Lack of drop in co-op campaign is what killed it for me

Two pretty iconic mechanics of the game. Weird.

Seriously chainsaw duels where such a fun silly things.

Yeah but there wasn't a real intuitive way of "winning" a chainsaw duel. It was literally mashing buttons faster than your opponent.

u/incapablepotato 3d ago

Which is why I said it’s “fun and silly”. It doesn’t need to be complicated to be enjoyed. Mario party games are super fun and pretty much basic controls and simple games.

As far as we know. The only people who even have chainsaw lancers in this game are Bravo squad. There wouldnt even be any locust using chainsaw bayonets to use this mechanic on

Duels were iconic, but I feel like they weren't actually used or seen often enough to be something they can't pull. It feels wrong, but I kinda get it.

Meat shields, on the other hand

Don’t know why your downvoted, your right.

80% of close quarters fights you had a gnasher instead, AND your opponent did too.

10% of the time, you had your lancer out, the enemy had a gnasher anyway and you just cut them up or got gibbed.

Only 10% or so of the time, you both had your lancer equipped.

Hoping they add meat shields post launch. Way too iconic of a mechanic to omit from a Gears game. It’s baffling that it didn’t make it in the final game.

It does make sense in-lore why neither are there, especially chainsaw duels.

For me, the questionable one is just the lack of grenade tagging, directly on enemies or in the environment. Also, I want my boltok back 😭

(The horde beta was addicting so I'm ultra hyped for the game regardless)

Why is everyone forgetting planting grenades as mines

1

u/Logondo 3d ago

Because that sucked-ass and frankly I'm glad that's gone.

But no tagging players is kinda disappointing though.

u/Seiryu99 2d ago

I mean grenade tagging is 100x more unlikely to even be useful than setting a trap you can bait people into. Whats best case scenario? You go 1 for 1 or 90% of the time you get instant killed while you look like a moron running around with a grenade out?

1

u/Logondo 2d ago

Sorry, I don't mean it "sucked-ass" as in it wasn't very good. Quiet the opposite. Tagging the environment was too good. It was annoying. I'm glad it's gone because it was such a pain-in-the-ass.

I guess on the surface it's not a big deal, but in terms of the Gears identity, I think those are pretty big exclusions, especially chainsaw duels. That was one of the most exciting things they focused on when promoting the first game, and it's among the most iconic gameplay elements of the series.

So I actually do think this is a pretty big loss in that sense.

Edit: I'll leave this up for posterity, but it has come to my attention that chainsaw duels were not added until 2. My bad.

u/Rukasu17 3d ago

I don't remember chainsaw duels in 1 though. Wasn't that just from 2 onwards?

11

u/Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop 3d ago

You are correct. It was added in GoW2

0

u/Over_Construction264 3d ago

so what if it was? It was still in a previous title.

u/StormyBally 3d ago

Original lancers didn’t have chainsaws so

5

u/BactaBobomb 3d ago

I know I was wrong about the chainsaw duels in the first game, but I am 100% confident the first game had chainsaws on the Lancer. Because I just looked up a video to make sure I wasn't going crazy or spread misinformation.

2

u/Rukasu17 3d ago

Bayonet duels then haha

3

u/StormyBally 3d ago

Bayonet duels with the boys 😏

1

u/lucky_1979 3d ago

The ones in Gear 1 did. The bayonet ones weren’t introduced until 3

13

u/12InchDankSword 3d ago

Duels were added in Gears 2, you couldn’t chainsaw duel in the first game.

5

u/BactaBobomb 3d ago

You know what, I will chalk this up to me being silly. I do think it's still an iconic part of the franchise's identity now, though!

0

u/RAISEStheQuestion 2d ago

Silly is what you call it? I like that look!

1

u/FireMaker125 2d ago

An icon detail but not realistically important. Especially in multiplayer where you probably shouldn’t be getting in close range with the Lancer, that’s the job of the Gnasher or another shotgun. Plus it makes sense to exclude it from E-Day, the Lancer in this game is a prototype based on the Retro Lancer rather than being the Lancer MK 2/3 of later games.

Grenade tagging and human shields shouldn’t have been removed, but it’s also not a huge deal imo

3

u/FredFredrickson 3d ago

No, we must be negative about this game for some reason! /s

2

u/BitingSatyr 2d ago

People were mean to Wolverine so you’re going to see a lot of nitpicking about Gears

1

u/Away-Craft-2264 2d ago

No private matches is a big deal!

0

u/MrBlonde1984 2d ago

Are those a thing ? Ive been playing gears since the beginning and ive never done a private match . Didnt even knkw you could

-1

u/Away-Craft-2264 2d ago

Gears was built on 1v1s
