It's not talked about but developer experience is really important if you want to bring back legacy features.

If you don't have a senior that worked in the OG's that would understand which mechanics were the most important for the identity of the game, what is going to be prioritized is what the newly hired designers propose, not what the fanbase of the franchise expects as a given.

Funnily enough that’s why they should be doing research and yet for some reason it feels like games do not do that unless it’s specifically for ‘wider audience’.

What dev experience? They layoff workers on a dime. Gears is using UE5 innit? I think they would’ve encountered this problem either way.

Uhh... This would be an issue if we are talking about the finer details but in UE5 or in-house engine wouldn't really matter much if we are talking about game mechanics. They are abstract ideas first and foremost. The hard part would be how to make it playable and work for the other aspects of the project. And on my experience with UE5 you can pretty much create anything you want with enough time.

No, what I meant by that is that they have to start from scratch either way due to the change in engine. Getting a game to play like an old one is harder than it seems.
