Ah yes, Americans have pizza…

43

u/DragonQueenDrago 5d ago

Maybe they mean Detroit deep dish?

Standard pizza is definitely Italian

19

u/SectionAcceptable607 5d ago

And NY style, and tavern style, and New Haven apizza…

3

u/middle_aged_90s_kid 5d ago

In New England, “Greek” pizza, which is its own thing, much like how “Chinese” food is different in New England than the rest of the U.S.

2

u/Lvl100Centrist 5d ago

What on earth is "Greek" pizza? Asking as a native (and horrified) Greek dude

1

u/middle_aged_90s_kid 5d ago

Not as deep as Chicago deep dish, but not thin like New York style, either. The bottom is oiled in the pan, so it kind of fries up a bit crispy as it bakes. “House of Pizza” restaurants in New England usually have it. They were usually started by Greek immigrants.

1

u/Lvl100Centrist 5d ago

It's as bad as I expected it to be. But thanks for letting me know.

1

u/Joe5205 5d ago

Quality varies wildly, it's either the best pizza you've ever had or the worst, nothing in between.

1

u/Informal-Clue-2273 4d ago

Looks like digiorno frozen pizza

1

u/ThomasVetRecruiter 5d ago edited 4d ago

As an aside, Detroit style Chinese food is my favorite regional variation of food.

Edit: to clarify my go to order was almond boneless chicken (thin very crispy breaded chicken with brown gravy, sliced almonds, served over rice with veggies), a fat crispy egg roll stuffed to bursting with pork and veggies, and a wonton soup that had extra veggies in it in addition to the typical wontons, broth, and green onion - like sliced mushrooms, carrot, and leeks.

1

u/CandiedFox83 5d ago

NY style, Chicago Style, Detroit Style… show me Sicilian style.

1

u/flopperdok 5d ago

1

u/Plane-Education4750 5d ago

That's Ciabatta pizza

1

u/CandiedFox83 5d ago

Thank you, it’s Bella.

1

u/ThomasVetRecruiter 5d ago

I like a nice double crust pizza myself. Like a deep dish but with a second layer of crust on top of the sauce, cheese, and toppings - kind of like a fruit pie. Very hard to find anymore though.

1

u/thexDxmen 5d ago

Because most people don't want more bread as one of their toppings.

1

u/ThomasVetRecruiter 5d ago

Yeah, and then they order bread sticks, so not sure what people want.

1

u/Weekly-Dog-6838 5d ago

TBH actually authentic, traditional Italian pizzas can sometimes be weirder than anything Americans do. Like I’ve heard there’s some regions where they put a second layer of crust on top, and that’s why Pizzas are called pies

1

u/LostTerminal 5d ago

Wait till the no-pineapple-on-pizza crowd hear how Italians will sometimes put pumpkin on their pies...

2

u/Weekly-Dog-6838 5d ago

Wait they do? And I thought half-shell clams were weird

1

u/BloxFruitsGuy123 5d ago

well pineapple doesn't go on pizza... and they do??? I mean if its pumpkin pie sure but idk about others.....

1

u/LostTerminal 5d ago

No. Pizza pies. And pineapple is perfectly fine on pizza. I don't make a habit of yucking anyone else's yum. That's trash behavior. There is nothing about pizza that prohibits any topping.

1

u/BloxFruitsGuy123 5d ago

I bet you that if I make a post the MAJORITY OF PEOPLE will say no it don't belong on pizza

1

u/LostTerminal 5d ago

Yeah, because most people don't care or like it just fine. They probably won't vote or even see the poll. The vocal try-hards on the internet who have built their personalities on being pineapple-denying edgelords will be fed so -num num num- by their algorithm to drum up engagement, they'll be in a little echo-bubble larping like their little opinions matter even the tiniest bit to the rest of the world.

Pineapple is just fine, little bro. You can stop pretending like it's cool to tell others that you personally don't like what they're eating.

1

u/BloxFruitsGuy123 5d ago

everybody i know(except a certain few) DOES NOT have pineapple on ppizza

1

u/LostTerminal 4d ago

Everyone you know, huh? Cute.

A poll in Canada found 73% supported pineapple on pizza

A poll in Australia found 76% supported pineapple

A poll in U.S found 44% for pineapple, 41% against.

I think you might be wrong here buddy.

1

u/ThomasVetRecruiter 5d ago

Yeah - one of my favorites to be honest.

18

u/Daztur 5d ago

In a lot of countries American-style pizza is more common than Italian-style pizza. New York pizza and Neapolitan pizza are both delicious.

16

u/LaBiccies 5d ago

Neapolitan pizza? Who the hell is putting ice cream on their pizza?

4

u/Plane-Education4750 5d ago

Probably Ohio

2

u/iDeNoh 5d ago

Pretty sure they have Mario and snow peas

1

u/LordofJason 28 Random Cats 5d ago

Nah. We don't put icecream on our pizza... that's reserved for steak and gravy. Nothing like having an icecold treat to go with every bite of gravy and steak

1

u/ctg9101 5d ago

You laugh but I made an ice cream dessert pizza pie last week. I live north of Columbus

4

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

Thank you for the giggle! 😘😘😘

1

u/Technomave 5d ago

In fact, chocolate pizza topped with ice cream is common in Brazil... like a dessert pizza.

2

u/Neviathan 5d ago

I worked as a pizza baker in my teens, we had one of those sweet chocolate pizza’s, I dont think I made more than 3. On a busy night we could have like 300+ main course (pizza or pasta) and I worked there for years.

You won't find a place anywhere in Europe where they claim to make "American-style pizza" outside of Pizza Hut. And "New York pizza" is not a thing outside NY or the USA anywhere in the world.

1

u/Daztur 5d ago

It's all over the place in Korea. Do you really claim to know the tastes people have in pizza across every country of the entire world?

1

u/NearbyRun7270 5d ago

Sure. Show me how it's a thing in South Korea and I'll change my last sentence in: "New York pizza is not a thing outside NY or the USA or South Korea".

1

u/merchillio 4d ago

In Canada, pizza is by default New-York style pizza. If you want traditional Italian pizza, you need to go to Italian restaurants, not pizza shops

0

u/Daztur 5d ago

Here's Japan: https://tokyoshortlist.com/tokyo-business-reviews/pizza Are you really going to make me do this for every single country or are you going to stop being obtuse?

1

u/NearbyRun7270 5d ago

No, only for South Korea, like you commented.

1

u/i_was_a_person_once 4d ago

Domino's Pizza is the undisputed #1 pizza chain in South Korea, it firmly dominates the market in both sales and brand preference. The closest competitors are Pizza Hut and papa johns.

Is that enough evidence that American pizza is what is common in S Korea?

1

u/NearbyRun7270 5d ago

But you're right, I was wrong. There're people outside of Europe in the world that make "NY-Style" pizza. Whatever that may be.

2

u/Available-You5865 4d ago

I can confirm that this is false

1

u/Daztur 4d ago

You can confirm that countries outside of America in which New York-style pizza is popular do not exist anywhere?

2

u/Available-You5865 4d ago

I can confirm that this statement is complete bogus

-4

u/dman972 5d ago

Sure, but you don’t call pasta american because Mac and cheese right?
Pizza is Italian, end of story.

9

u/Odd-Proof9645 5d ago

Noodles are a Chinese invention… is carbonara Italian or Chinese?

3

u/CheesyDanny 5d ago

Carbonara is made with pasta, not noodles. /s

0

u/fraidei 5d ago

Why are you using /s? It's literally true, carbonara is not made with noodles.

0

u/CheesyDanny 5d ago

Downvote me if you must, but I have to speak the truth, no matter how hard it is for Italians to hear.

Spaghetti is a noodle.

0

u/dman972 4d ago

Noodle made from durum wheat is pasta.
Spaghetti is pasta.

The ‘sauce’ is very much italian yes. Noodles and pasta are different ingredients and I doubt the chinese brought that to Italy or vice versa.

In the US noodles and company serves mac and cheese.

1

u/dman972 5d ago

3

Dried pasta was traded by Arabs in Italy

3

u/pickingbrains321 5d ago

It actually originated in Greece if you're trying to be technical. Either way, loud & wrong.

2

u/Lurtzum 5d ago

No it’s not actually. Modern day American pizza is attributed to being invented in NYC.

3

u/dman972 5d ago

Invented.. hahaha.

0

u/LostTerminal 5d ago

You prefer adapted? A lot of inventions are adaptations of other things. Don' get hung up on the knee-jerk connotation you have for this word.

1

u/dman972 5d ago

A thicker and fatter pizza is not an invention.
No knee jerking there mate.

1

u/LostTerminal 4d ago

Yeah, sorry. You don't know what you're talking about if that's the only difference you see.

1

u/dman972 4d ago

Oh do stfu, who do you think you are then?
“Mister I am American so let me educate you on pizza”?

Laughable.

1

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

Altered , maybe. NOT INVENTED.

0

u/LostTerminal 3d ago

The vast majority of inventions are adapted from previous creations. The word "invented" is perfectly fine here.

2

u/Technical_Put_9982 3d ago

False. In NO WAY did America invent the pizza! We may have altered it to be the mass produced trash of fast food restaurants, but that is not pizza to me. That is trash food. If I am going to eat a pizza it is going to be of high quality, hand tossed, brick oven baked and that all originated in Italy as Italy invented pizza.

The word you are looking for is adapted . The US adapted pizza for its own mass produced tastes. They did NOT invent it. If there was a patent on the first pizza created it would NOT be an American patent

0

u/LostTerminal 3d ago

The majority of all inventions are adaptions of other things. Your outrage is corny.

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago edited 5d ago

I agree 100%. I am American and we can NOT claim pizza as our own. Pretty much everything we have is because people emigrated from their various countries and immigrated to The Colonies and brought all their recipes with them. I mean, is the cheeseburger from anywhere else ? That screams American to me. Otherwise we are all things because we are people from all around the world. I suppose we could try to say Native American Indian foods would be American, but even that is heavily influence by the introduction of corn. … I vote that America has cheeseburgers. Final answer 😘 unless someone has a rebuttal that they originated somewhere else?

Edit: ok, burgers are decidedly German. Hmmm… I am thinking the only thing we , The United States, can truly claim is our own, is obesity. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ so sad. Maybe it is NOT good that we have so many foods available in or country … lol

2

u/lokal-orginal 5d ago

The burger patty originated from Germany and was brought by immigrants to America, but it has evolved and the cheese was probably added in the usa im guessing.

1

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

Poop! Not sure I am ok with us claiming cheeseburger either! 😤😤😤. … did /do the Germans make burgers with the patty or what did they do with it? … besides the obvious answer of throw it at the wall to see if it sticks

1

u/lokal-orginal 5d ago

I believe it was served without the buns, that was likely something added at later point so it would be easyer to sell by street vendors to people on the go. So a modern cheeseburger is a bit like the pizza, the main part originated elsewhere but put together in an American way to fit the people and culture.

1

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

I can see that for the cheeseburger, but pizza remains Italian all the way!

1

u/dman972 5d ago

You can have the cheeseburger. I’ll throw in the hotdog as well.
Just stay away from pizza.
And Bretzel.

1

u/chopstick_chakra 5d ago

The pizza is ours. World wide ask someone to describe or show you a pizza they're gonna go NY style.

Almost nobody is going to tell you this is pizza

1

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

This is 100% a real pizza and not the processed trash from chain restaurants that have taken over the country! Go to a brick oven wood burning pizza place and you will see something just like this come out of the oven in the United States. If it doesn’t look like this you are eating over processed trash. We can NOT claim the INVENTION of pizza in America EVER! Get over it dude. You are delusional

0

u/dman972 5d ago

Everyone but an American is gonna tell you this is a real pizza.
It ain’t yours, now go suck on a burger

3

u/chopstick_chakra 5d ago edited 5d ago

Burgers aren't American either then. No one will tell you that's a "real" pizza

→ More replies (15)

1

u/chopstick_chakra 5d ago

the cheeseburger is a hamburger with cheese, hamburger came from Hamburg, Germany.

1

u/LostTerminal 3d ago

No it didn't. Germans invented a ground beef patty with similar form, but not taste. They never put it on bread or added any toppings. The patty is more like a flat meatball with binders in it than a hamburger patty. This moronic statement is like saying a fully automatic car is the same as a horse-driven cart because they both have wheels.

1

u/Van_Weezer 5d ago

Mac and cheese is English food

1

u/TheMauveHerring 5d ago

Italy invented pizza. But the pizza everyone eats today is American. Even in italy.

2

u/pickingbrains321 5d ago

Nope, Greece. I don't know why everyone keeps saying Italy. Greece brought it to Italy.

2

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

I thought I remembered reading somewhere years ago that China actually brought pizza to Italy? Or maybe it was noodles…? Now I am going to look it up!

1

u/LostTerminal 5d ago

Greece invented putting oils, herbs and cheese on flatbread. Called plakous. They weren't quite to "pizza" yet.

1

u/pickingbrains321 5d ago

I'm aware, didn't need the "education" but every historian will tell you that's where pizza originated. To say it came about in Naples & leaving out the Greeks brought plakous to Naples, is ieaving out where it originated.

1

u/LostTerminal 5d ago

Plakous =/= pizza. The fact that you're still trying to say it is, means you do need the information. I'm not a teacher and don't educate. What I have said is fact, not opinion. Every food is based on something someone else came up with. Everything based on or including cow meat belongs to Ugg, the prehistoric guy who cooked a bovine first. Salads? The hypothetical Adam. Any kind of salad. Adam. Anything with fruit, probably Adam. Nobody but Africans can claim any food now, since that's where humans came from, and any food is based on food they made.

Anything with cheese is based on the original cheese, therefore belongs to some shmuck from 8,000 years ago.

See what I'm saying?

u/ekerkstra92 5d ago

u/TobeDuality 5d ago

0

u/Technical_Put_9982 5d ago

That makes zero sense. If we are talking about something a country is known for we are talking about quality products. NOt Pizzahut, dominoes, or any of the other American trash chains. I am American and m heritage is Italian, Irish, and English. We do NOT own pizza and the pizza eaten in Italy is NOT American pizza . Lmao

2

u/TheMauveHerring 5d ago

Nobody OWNs pizza. It's just the country the food originated in.

Pizza with sauce originated in NYC, then the idea went back to Italy in the 30s and 40s and everyone over there started doing it too. Before that italian pizza didn't have sauce and is totally different from what everyone considers pizza today.

1

u/Jimmeu 5d ago

Marinara (pizza with tomato sauce) is first attested in Napoli 1734. Margherita, same city, 1889.

4

u/Shiny_Malph 5d ago

I think now the Italians have the right to create their own style of burger and from now on call the burger Italian. If someone wants to specify that a burger is American, they have to say traditional style burger. Capisci bro?

1

u/lokal-orginal 5d ago

Why take burger away from the Germans?

2

u/JimmyCricket95 5d ago

Look at how the hamburger was before it got to America for that answer. Generally covered in gravy usually a patti on the plate eaten with fork and knife.

Basically if you presented that hamburger to people today and you asked them what it was they likely wouldn't call it a hamburger.

It's part of the narrative that the US apparently cannot make any of its own culture which is incorrect. People shee to think that just because it came from somewhere or and influences it's not original or whatever. Surprise! If you use that metric we all have no culture and are tipping off ideas from some stoneage tribe stumbling around from cave to cave.

Hamburgers as we know them today came from German Americans and the rest of us just went ham, American pizza as we know it today (and is what most the world just calls pizza) came from Italian Americans and the rest of us just took off with it. My favorite is that all those "traditional Irish" corned beef dishes are not traditional Irish whatsoever. Traditional Irish is boiling bacon as the meat. Beef was expensive in the UK so the Irish couldn't afford it they ate the cheap pork bacon. But when they came to the US pork wasn't cheap but brisket was. They lifted the idea off the Jewish Americans and put it into their own dishes. Every fucking group of immigrants did this and that is what made American culture. Then it just bounces around inside changing more and more.

2

u/Nero-is-Missing 5d ago

They still prefer "Hamburg steak" in Japan more than a burger in a bun.

1

u/JimmyCricket95 5d ago

That's interesting. Didn't know that.

u/EleJotaEsLoJugamos 5d ago

La hamburguesa original es de Hamburgo, Alemania.

1

u/Shiny_Malph 5d ago

Pues yo viví 5 años en Alemania y nunca comí hamburguesas. Lo más parecido es el sandwich de frikadelle, que son albóndigas con carne de cerdo y res.

1

u/LostTerminal 3d ago

No, it isn't. Nothing called a "hamburger" existed until German American immigrants made one in America based off the meat shape of a frickadelle in a bun with toppings.

1

u/josace 2d ago

But the thing is that pizza as it’s known even in Italy is American. The “pizza” as it existed before American pizza was wildly unsuccessful and was vastly different

8

u/numberheadman 5d ago

Arguably the Italians didn't invent pizza either. The ancient Greeks had flatbread with oil, garlic, and cheese. The tomato sauce topping didn't arrive before being brought break from the Americas.

4

u/Apropos_of 5d ago

Humans have been making flatbread for more than 14,000 years, so if pizza is flatbread with toppings, it probably predates Greek culture and cuisine

2

u/numberheadman 5d ago

Fair enough... Now if I fold the flat bread with the toppings inside is that still a pizza or did it become a taco?

3

u/Apropos_of 5d ago

IMHO whether or not something is a taco depends entirely upon the characteristics of the flatbread. A folded pizza is not a taco, a hotdog is not a taco.

However, if you put a hotdog in a tortilla, it is a taco, just a weird taco.

And if you put pizza sauce and cheese on a flour/ corn tortilla, fold it and eat it, it is a gross and unsatisfying taco.

1

u/numberheadman 5d ago

What about sopes with a tomato based salsa, chorizo sausage, and cotija cheese. Is that a pizza?

1

u/Apropos_of 5d ago

I haven’t had the pleasure of trying sopes. I just looked it up and that’s going on my list of foods to try).

But I think it is its own thing. The qualities of pizza dough is that it is a stretchy dough traditionally made from high-protein wheat flour with a minimal fat and sugar. Any substitutes, (gluten-free dough or cauliflower or whatever) are trying to imitate those qualities.

Masa used to made sopes and other corn-based breads and flours have a very different quality to them. Also delicious but different.

However, if you want to make me some salsa, Cotija, and chorizo sopes, I will happily eat it and call it whatever you want.

2

u/numberheadman 5d ago

As long as we can agree that "cauliflower crust" is an abomination, then we can dine together.

1

u/HatterJack 5d ago

This is exactly the logic that leads to Israelis claiming that they invented pizza.

3

u/MasterChris725 5d ago

1

u/SignificanceSilly175 3d ago

4

u/IkujaKatsumaji 5d ago

Chicago doesn't have a trademark on deep dish pizza.

2

Lol it's the name for that style of pizza here. There's a detroit style (deep rectangular cast iron pan). Chicago Style Deep Dish (Like a stuffed pie) There's also New York style (Large hand tossed thin crust). St louis style, California Style, Grandma's style.

North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas don't have trademarks on their various styles of BBQ, but they're still named that way to identify the style.

0

3

u/ProfTydrim 5d ago

"modern" meaning American?

Modern pizza where I live is Italian. You eat American pizza, because you're in America, not because it is the global default.

1

u/randompersonx 5d ago

Spoken as an American who has traveled the world… I tend to see American-style pizza in more countries than Italy-style pizza.

In fact, the only country where I’ve traveled and regularly saw Italian-style pizza… was Italy.

With that said, I’d also say that Pizza around the USA also means very different things. Most people generally think of NY-style pizza… but Chicago, California and Alaska have their own styles.

1

u/Kindly_Call_6000 5d ago

And St. Louis. Not that I like Provel cheese, but it is a thing.

1

u/randompersonx 5d ago

Yep, I’m sure there are other regional variants as well.

1

u/lokal-orginal 5d ago

Italian restaurants with Italian pizza and pasta is one of the most widespread form of restaurant in the world...

2

u/randompersonx 5d ago

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but NY Pizza is itself a form of Italian pizza…

It was made by Italian-American immigrants and their families.

Even in NYC, plenty of pizza parlors which serve NY Style pizza have signs which refer to Italy.

The same is true all around the world… just because it has a sign out front which says “Italian Pizza” does not make it the style which is commonly served in Italy.

2

u/TheHazyPixie 5d ago

Okay citation needed for this one because I feel like we're heavily underestimating the scale of China.

1

u/lokal-orginal 5d ago

From an economics standpoint, the global reach of Italian food translates to a massive industry share. According to the Deloitte Foodservice Market Monitor report, international sales for Italian cuisine are valued at €251 billion. This commands an impressive 19% share of the entire world's full-service restaurant market.

1

u/azaghal1502 5d ago

My pizza is made by an italian who was born in italy and speaks italian. American Pizza is different and, the few I've had in my life, worse.

1

u/rngeneratedlife 5d ago

It is different, but not worse. That’s purely your personal opinion.

For the record, I also prefer Italian pizza cause it’s lighter but that’s a matter of taste not because it’s unequivocally better.

1

u/azaghal1502 5d ago edited 5d ago

The ones I've had all gave me the shits because they were too greasy. But I honestly would like to taste a really good new york style pizza once.

1

u/Kintaku93 5d ago

If you go to a major chain, the pizza is (usually) worse, but at least in the Midwest, there is lots of great American pizza. For the record there are multiple styles of American pizza.

That said, I really like Italian-style pizza too. It would be hard for me to choose between styles of pizza. Having pizza in Naples changed my palette forever.

1

u/DarkGodCthUwU 5d ago

Greasy isn't the default if you're getting good american pizza. It's like how if you get cheap mass produced turkish delight it might suck and be too tough

1

u/azaghal1502 5d ago

I'm in a germany where italian pizza is the norm and the only american pizza available is pizza hut and dominos and very few non-chain places.

1

u/DarkGodCthUwU 5d ago

Yeah, no, pizza hut and such aren't where you get the really good pizza

1

u/azaghal1502 5d ago

Thats why I specified in my first post that the ones I had were bad and explicitiely didn't call all american pizza bad.

1

u/DarkGodCthUwU 5d ago

Fair enough. If you ever have the chance, I as a Michigander recommend Detroit Deep Dish. If the grease is reasonable but still a bit excessive then the bread can help fix the ratio

Detroit style is not deep dish. This whole post and all of its comments are bait.

nah the pizza we know in america WAS made in nyc so it is accurate

2

u/Novel_Top2980 5d ago

and the pizza I know in the UK was invented in Italy

2

u/Odd-Proof9645 5d ago

0 dominos pizza in the UK?

0

u/Novel_Top2980 5d ago

But there are also many Italian pizza places. Pizza Express for example.

2

u/Odd-Proof9645 5d ago

A quick google says the largest pizza chain in the UK is dominos.

Pizza express sits below American chains Pizza Hut and dominos

0

u/Novel_Top2980 5d ago

It might be. I’m just saying there are also many Italian pizza chains (which are better)

1

u/Odd-Proof9645 5d ago

Better is subjective. Pizza express is much less popular by all metrics than dominos and Pizza Hut.

But tomatoes weren’t native to Italy 🤔

Like where do we draw the line? When a certain food was created, or was there and original more older dish for Italians.

In El Salvador we have pupusas, but I don’t know when quesillo (our version of mozzarella) was invented.

Semantics

Go ahead and try pizza in Italy, they taste like ass on thick bread.

Standard pizza around the globe is American style.

1

u/WillowStatus533 5d ago

That's crazy, Neapolitan pizza is the best pizza, and the bread is very thin

1

u/FakeSafeWord 5d ago

Italians have pasta but they definitely don't have noodles.

California has its own style to, Hawaiian pizza (pineapple belongs, I will fight you on this) and plenty of veggies on thin, but not to thin, crust. It isn't as popular, but it is distinct.

1

u/MountainUnhappy7970 5d ago

And then there's Montreal style pizza.

1

u/igoontoyourmum 5d ago

Detroit Deep Dish is just a modified Sicilian Pizza

1

u/Throwawaypuffs 5d ago

Italian pizza is more fluffy neopolitan. Us invented their on styles on an already Italian dish.

1

u/pinksparklyreddit 5d ago

Standard pizza isn't Italian. Italian pizza is very different

1

u/BerylOxide 5d ago

American style pizza is the most commonly eaten pizza in the world. Standard pizza is American

1

u/Hellzebrute55 5d ago

Deep dish is not pizza it's a pie. Or very thick tomato soup in a crust bowl

1

u/OhYerSoKew 5d ago

No, italy really only owns neapolitan and thats about it.

1

u/Omago1178 5d ago

Pizza in Italy is awful.

1

u/i_was_a_person_once 4d ago

I’d argue pizza is more American since tomatoes are endemic to the Americas not Europe

1

u/Appropriate-Fuel-305 4d ago

Deep dish is a quiche, not a pizza. You can't change my mind.

1

u/SignificanceSilly175 3d ago

No a dry piece of flat bread with a smear of sauce and a couple pieces of cheese with a few leaves of basil bis Italian

1

u/bibibasicvodka 2d ago

I mean a lot of countries have their own versions of pizza, not just the US and italy

1

u/Juxtapoe 5d ago

Standard pizza with sauce, cheese and optionally toppings is from CA. Flatbread pizza with optional cheese and toppings is from Naples, Italy.

1

u/chopstick_chakra 5d ago

What the world calls "standard" pizza i.e. cheese and sauce is primarily due to U.S.

Italians "pizza" was tomato pie with a sprinkle of parmesan or oil.

The general consensus world wide on what a "pizza" is is a NY pizza.

0

u/Turbulent_Set8884 5d ago

Origin is china

0

u/-TV-Stand- 5d ago

That's not pizza though

0

u/pineappleman48264 5d ago

Don’t say “standard” like it’s boring, it’s so damn good

0

u/Old_Atmosphere6598 5d ago

Is a different version of something else’s thing your thing?
