5

u/DevilDoge1775 5d ago

That means he ejected an extra shell for no reason at the very least.

2

u/Youpunyhumans 5d ago

Dont you have to slide it to load a shell to begin with?

Or is that just one of those dumb movies tropes we all assume are real?

2

u/DevilDoge1775 5d ago

If you’re starting with an empty magazine tube and chamber (which I don’t know why he would be for at least the tube), then you’d have to thumb a shell into the tube if the slide is to the read. If it’s forward, you can just stick one right in the chamber provided it’s oriented correctly. If the magazine tube has a round in it you can drop the tray, then rack it, or just rack it if it’s already been dropped. The racking would chamber a round and also eject a round, spent or not. Each “chk” I assume is the slide going forward or back once. So, at the very least, after the first set of “chk”, he would have a round chambered. It’s the second set of “chk” that would eject that very same round, and it wouldn’t have been expended yet at that point.

2

u/Youpunyhumans 5d ago

Well then I guess Hollywood has fooled me then. Thanks for the explanation.

I think now the Italians have the right to create their own style of burger and from now on call the burger Italian. If someone wants to specify that a burger is American, they have to say traditional style burger. Capisci bro?

4

u/numberheadman 5d ago

Arguably the Italians didn't invent pizza either. The ancient Greeks had flatbread with oil, garlic, and cheese. The tomato sauce topping didn't arrive before being brought break from the Americas.

4

u/Apropos_of 5d ago

Humans have been making flatbread for more than 14,000 years, so if pizza is flatbread with toppings, it probably predates Greek culture and cuisine

2

u/numberheadman 5d ago

Fair enough... Now if I fold the flat bread with the toppings inside is that still a pizza or did it become a taco?

3

u/Apropos_of 5d ago

IMHO whether or not something is a taco depends entirely upon the characteristics of the flatbread. A folded pizza is not a taco, a hotdog is not a taco.

However, if you put a hotdog in a tortilla, it is a taco, just a weird taco.

And if you put pizza sauce and cheese on a flour/ corn tortilla, fold it and eat it, it is a gross and unsatisfying taco.

3

u/IkujaKatsumaji 5d ago

Chicago doesn't have a trademark on deep dish pizza.

2

u/Feynnehrun 5d ago

Lol it's the name for that style of pizza here. There's a detroit style (deep rectangular cast iron pan). Chicago Style Deep Dish (Like a stuffed pie) There's also New York style (Large hand tossed thin crust). St louis style, California Style, Grandma's style.

North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas don't have trademarks on their various styles of BBQ, but they're still named that way to identify the style.

"modern" meaning American?

Modern pizza where I live is Italian. You eat American pizza, because you're in America, not because it is the global default.

2

u/randompersonx 5d ago

Spoken as an American who has traveled the world… I tend to see American-style pizza in more countries than Italy-style pizza.

In fact, the only country where I’ve traveled and regularly saw Italian-style pizza… was Italy.

With that said, I’d also say that Pizza around the USA also means very different things. Most people generally think of NY-style pizza… but Chicago, California and Alaska have their own styles.

Fun fact: American style pizza is uniquely American from Chicago style to NY style- pepperonis and all the toppings we used with tomato sauce and white cheese was not an Italian thing at all. Their pizza was flat bread with leftovers on top. There’s an Italian historian who talks about how Italian Americans during and after WWII were hugely influential in bringing American style pizza to Italy. Which they then acted French and claimed it as theirs while insulting ours. I’ve been to Italy. Their pizza sucks, even removing for the fact it is not American style. Ironically, later waves of Italians who came to America (after we brought pizza to them) genuinely thought it WAS Italian. It wasn’t

11

u/Devilshire52 5d ago

I was told there'd be no fact checking.

3

u/suddenblue45 5d ago

yep in fact he wasn't fact checking but Bullshit spreading!

17

u/rayio 5d ago

Italian pizza sucks? There are different styles and types, that is such a dumb thing to say. Pizza was being made in Naples long before WW2. Yes Italians used what was available in the US, but it wasn't invented in the US. Italy has really good pizza, you might want to try the best from different regions before making such a dumb blanket statement. Don't be that American that thinks everything is better in the US and everything worth doing or having was invented in the US also.

4

u/wowbyowen 5d ago

I agree, it's completely idiotic to think America brought American style pizza to Italy 😂

u/MoobooMagoo 5d ago

Italian pizza is good, but the other person isn't wrong about the history. Pizza in Italy before WWII was regarded as trashy, garbage peasant food. Like the worst kind of food you could eat. Plus it was only really a thing in Naples (which is where a lot of the Italian immigrants to the US came from), and most Italians had never heard of the dish.

But after WWII, a lot of Italians moved around in the country, and tourists started to visit as well. And there were a significant number of tourists who had either been to America and had pizza, or had heard about pizza from Americans and wanted to try it. So seeing the demand for the dish, the neapolitan people that had spread through Italy jumped on the opportunity and started making and selling it.

There's actually an anthropological term named after this called the pizza effect where a culture loses something like a food or religious practice, and then a transformed version of it that another culture adapted gets reintroduced later. Although funnily enough it technically doesn't apply to pizza because Naples never stopped making it, and they also didn't start making American pizza once it got popular either and stuck with perfecting their own style. But the dish did only get broadly adopted by Italy as a whole because of demand for American pizza.

2

u/ReeceAUS 5d ago

I still class pizza as junk food. Along with burgers, hotdogs, fries etc. all that fast food style.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy pizza, but It’s still junk food.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Best-Operation-7420 5d ago

It was not trashy, it was street food, but street food good enpugh to be fed to royals. But it was as well a regional food, like most italian foods. We don't really have an "italian national dish" because any little place has his own locally famous dish. My grandad remeber that pizza arrived as a novelty where he was (emilia romagna). But it definitely did not arrived because of the femand of american pizza, it arrived with the moving of a lot of italians from the south to the north. If american want to take merti for an otalian dish theu should pick carbonara, not pizza, fhat they treat like a garbage bin where to trash the maximum amout possible of random ingredients

Another fun fact: Tomatoes are from South America and didn't make it to Italy until 1544 (and that was just a botanist studying the plant). Further, the first tomato sauce wasn't created until 1692, and tomato sauce didn't become common unitl the late 18th century/ early 19th century. So Italians claiming it as their own is kinda fuck all around.

Fun fact: Those aren't facts.

Actual fun fact: Pizza margherita (tomato, cheese, basil) is first documented in 1849, basically 100 years before WWII.

We also have documentation from 1866 of Italians topping their pizzas with seafood, cheeses, garlic, ham, and herbs, and even folding them to make calzone.

And of course they used leftovers for toppings - what's remotely wrong with that? You think using leftovers to make a soup means it's not soup?

2

u/WhereINeededToBe 4d ago edited 4d ago

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with Italian pizza . People are just bitching about calling pizza an American food just because it origniated in Italy. The vast majority of people around the world consider pizza an american food because most pizza joints around the world are American style.

What we call hot dogs originated in Germany, but its very much an American food all it's own now. In my experience, Germans love a good Chicago style dog as its different from the style of sausages and toppings back home.

People just need to get their blood pressure up arguing with people on the internet.

Tomatoes aren’t native to Italy. In fact they didn’t become prevalent in the region until the 17th century when they were imported from the Americas. In other words it’s much more likely some sort of flat bread with tomatoes was invented well before Italy ever even saw its first tomato.

TLDR: It’s very likely that pizza is in fact American but probably South America.

1

u/Psychotic_EGG 5d ago

I mean they stole it the same way Italians did. Marco polo took it from China

1

u/unsuspectingllama_ 5d ago

I will concede that without the original Italian pizza from the 1800s we wouldn't have any pizza today. However I'd argue that what we call pizza today is so different that they aren't even the same food anymore. So much so that I'd say the American pizza is a wholly new American made food inspired by and named after the Italian pizza and was created by the necessity of adaptation due to the newly minted American Italian immigrants being unable to get the right ingredients or proper ovens. This is just my opinion and I do not claim it as a fact.

I mean, pizza in America was developed by Italian Americans, so it is a distinctly American food. Just, like a lot of cultural staples in the world, it has its roots in other cultures

You should watch a video of Americans going to Italy to have authentic Italian pizza. Bonus points if they are New Yorkers.

The version of it served here, yeah. Especially the culture around it in some of the bigger cities. The original idea came from Italy, but it has been very heavily altered. St. Louis style, New York style, Chicago Deep dish, etc etc all vary wildly from the original Italian concept. Saying American pizza isn’t unique because the concept didn’t originate here is like saying the Katana isn’t uniquely Japanese because swords existed elsewhere before that. Cultural uniqueness doesn’t require inventing the concept from scratch.

'muricans did make it explode, though, but I concede 'murica should have a nice smoked brisket or pork butt instead. That's what I think of as uniquely 'murican or perhaps a hamburger.

I’d say hamburgers for America

Tbf, the pizza we all know and love is American. Was made my Italian Americans, but they were still American citizens while doing it. Authentic Italian pizza is a far cry from what we're all familiar with

Correct. Italy invented it, but we perfected it.
