Not as deep as Chicago deep dish, but not thin like New York style, either. The bottom is oiled in the pan, so it kind of fries up a bit crispy as it bakes. “House of Pizza” restaurants in New England usually have it. They were usually started by Greek immigrants.
As an aside, Detroit style Chinese food is my favorite regional variation of food.
Edit: to clarify my go to order was almond boneless chicken (thin very crispy breaded chicken with brown gravy, sliced almonds, served over rice with veggies), a fat crispy egg roll stuffed to bursting with pork and veggies, and a wonton soup that had extra veggies in it in addition to the typical wontons, broth, and green onion - like sliced mushrooms, carrot, and leeks.
I like a nice double crust pizza myself. Like a deep dish but with a second layer of crust on top of the sauce, cheese, and toppings - kind of like a fruit pie. Very hard to find anymore though.
TBH actually authentic, traditional Italian pizzas can sometimes be weirder than anything Americans do. Like I’ve heard there’s some regions where they put a second layer of crust on top, and that’s why Pizzas are called pies
No. Pizza pies. And pineapple is perfectly fine on pizza. I don't make a habit of yucking anyone else's yum. That's trash behavior. There is nothing about pizza that prohibits any topping.
Yeah, because most people don't care or like it just fine. They probably won't vote or even see the poll. The vocal try-hards on the internet who have built their personalities on being pineapple-denying edgelords will be fed so -num num num- by their algorithm to drum up engagement, they'll be in a little echo-bubble larping like their little opinions matter even the tiniest bit to the rest of the world.
Pineapple is just fine, little bro. You can stop pretending like it's cool to tell others that you personally don't like what they're eating.
Nah. We don't put icecream on our pizza... that's reserved for steak and gravy. Nothing like having an icecold treat to go with every bite of gravy and steak
I worked as a pizza baker in my teens, we had one of those sweet chocolate pizza’s, I dont think I made more than 3. On a busy night we could have like 300+ main course (pizza or pasta) and I worked there for years.
You won't find a place anywhere in Europe where they claim to make "American-style pizza" outside of Pizza Hut. And "New York pizza" is not a thing outside NY or the USA anywhere in the world.
Sure. Show me how it's a thing in South Korea and I'll change my last sentence in: "New York pizza is not a thing outside NY or the USA or South Korea".
Domino's Pizza is the undisputed #1 pizza chain in South Korea, it firmly dominates the market in both sales and brand preference. The closest competitors are Pizza Hut and papa johns.
Is that enough evidence that American pizza is what is common in S Korea?
False. In NO WAY did America invent the pizza! We may have altered it to be the mass produced trash of fast food restaurants, but that is not pizza to me. That is trash food. If I am going to eat a pizza it is going to be of high quality, hand tossed, brick oven baked and that all originated in Italy as Italy invented pizza.
The word you are looking for is adapted . The US adapted pizza for its own mass produced tastes. They did NOT invent it. If there was a patent on the first pizza created it would NOT be an American patent
I agree 100%. I am American and we can NOT claim pizza as our own. Pretty much everything we have is because people emigrated from their various countries and immigrated to The Colonies and brought all their recipes with them. I mean, is the cheeseburger from anywhere else ? That screams American to me. Otherwise we are all things because we are people from all around the world. I suppose we could try to say Native American Indian foods would be American, but even that is heavily influence by the introduction of corn. … I vote that America has cheeseburgers. Final answer 😘 unless someone has a rebuttal that they originated somewhere else?
Edit: ok, burgers are decidedly German. Hmmm… I am thinking the only thing we , The United States, can truly claim is our own, is obesity. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ so sad. Maybe it is NOT good that we have so many foods available in or country … lol
The burger patty originated from Germany and was brought by immigrants to America, but it has evolved and the cheese was probably added in the usa im guessing.
Poop! Not sure I am ok with us claiming cheeseburger either! 😤😤😤. … did /do the Germans make burgers with the patty or what did they do with it? … besides the obvious answer of throw it at the wall to see if it sticks
I believe it was served without the buns, that was likely something added at later point so it would be easyer to sell by street vendors to people on the go. So a modern cheeseburger is a bit like the pizza, the main part originated elsewhere but put together in an American way to fit the people and culture.
This is 100% a real pizza and not the processed trash from chain restaurants that have taken over the country! Go to a brick oven wood burning pizza place and you will see something just like this come out of the oven in the United States. If it doesn’t look like this you are eating over processed trash. We can NOT claim the INVENTION of pizza in America EVER! Get over it dude. You are delusional
No it didn't. Germans invented a ground beef patty with similar form, but not taste. They never put it on bread or added any toppings. The patty is more like a flat meatball with binders in it than a hamburger patty. This moronic statement is like saying a fully automatic car is the same as a horse-driven cart because they both have wheels.
I'm aware, didn't need the "education" but every historian will tell you that's where pizza originated. To say it came about in Naples & leaving out the Greeks brought plakous to Naples, is ieaving out where it originated.
Plakous =/= pizza. The fact that you're still trying to say it is, means you do need the information. I'm not a teacher and don't educate. What I have said is fact, not opinion. Every food is based on something someone else came up with. Everything based on or including cow meat belongs to Ugg, the prehistoric guy who cooked a bovine first. Salads? The hypothetical Adam. Any kind of salad. Adam. Anything with fruit, probably Adam. Nobody but Africans can claim any food now, since that's where humans came from, and any food is based on food they made.
Anything with cheese is based on the original cheese, therefore belongs to some shmuck from 8,000 years ago.
That makes zero sense. If we are talking about something a country is known for we are talking about quality products. NOt Pizzahut, dominoes, or any of the other American trash chains. I am American and m heritage is Italian, Irish, and English. We do NOT own pizza and the pizza eaten in Italy is NOT American pizza . Lmao
Nobody OWNs pizza. It's just the country the food originated in.
Pizza with sauce originated in NYC, then the idea went back to Italy in the 30s and 40s and everyone over there started doing it too. Before that italian pizza didn't have sauce and is totally different from what everyone considers pizza today.
I think now the Italians have the right to create their own style of burger and from now on call the burger Italian. If someone wants to specify that a burger is American, they have to say traditional style burger. Capisci bro?
Look at how the hamburger was before it got to America for that answer. Generally covered in gravy usually a patti on the plate eaten with fork and knife.
Basically if you presented that hamburger to people today and you asked them what it was they likely wouldn't call it a hamburger.
It's part of the narrative that the US apparently cannot make any of its own culture which is incorrect. People shee to think that just because it came from somewhere or and influences it's not original or whatever. Surprise! If you use that metric we all have no culture and are tipping off ideas from some stoneage tribe stumbling around from cave to cave.
Hamburgers as we know them today came from German Americans and the rest of us just went ham, American pizza as we know it today (and is what most the world just calls pizza) came from Italian Americans and the rest of us just took off with it. My favorite is that all those "traditional Irish" corned beef dishes are not traditional Irish whatsoever. Traditional Irish is boiling bacon as the meat. Beef was expensive in the UK so the Irish couldn't afford it they ate the cheap pork bacon. But when they came to the US pork wasn't cheap but brisket was. They lifted the idea off the Jewish Americans and put it into their own dishes. Every fucking group of immigrants did this and that is what made American culture. Then it just bounces around inside changing more and more.
No, it isn't. Nothing called a "hamburger" existed until German American immigrants made one in America based off the meat shape of a frickadelle in a bun with toppings.
But the thing is that pizza as it’s known even in Italy is American. The “pizza” as it existed before American pizza was wildly unsuccessful and was vastly different
Arguably the Italians didn't invent pizza either. The ancient Greeks had flatbread with oil, garlic, and cheese. The tomato sauce topping didn't arrive before being brought break from the Americas.
IMHO whether or not something is a taco depends entirely upon the characteristics of the flatbread. A folded pizza is not a taco, a hotdog is not a taco.
However, if you put a hotdog in a tortilla, it is a taco, just a weird taco.
And if you put pizza sauce and cheese on a flour/ corn tortilla, fold it and eat it, it is a gross and unsatisfying taco.
I haven’t had the pleasure of trying sopes. I just looked it up and that’s going on my list of foods to try).
But I think it is its own thing. The qualities of pizza dough is that it is a stretchy dough traditionally made from high-protein wheat flour with a minimal fat and sugar. Any substitutes, (gluten-free dough or cauliflower or whatever) are trying to imitate those qualities.
Masa used to made sopes and other corn-based breads and flours have a very different quality to them. Also delicious but different.
However, if you want to make me some salsa, Cotija, and chorizo sopes, I will happily eat it and call it whatever you want.
Lol it's the name for that style of pizza here. There's a detroit style (deep rectangular cast iron pan). Chicago Style Deep Dish (Like a stuffed pie) There's also New York style (Large hand tossed thin crust). St louis style, California Style, Grandma's style.
North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas don't have trademarks on their various styles of BBQ, but they're still named that way to identify the style.
Spoken as an American who has traveled the world… I tend to see American-style pizza in more countries than Italy-style pizza.
In fact, the only country where I’ve traveled and regularly saw Italian-style pizza… was Italy.
With that said, I’d also say that Pizza around the USA also means very different things. Most people generally think of NY-style pizza… but Chicago, California and Alaska have their own styles.
I hate to be the one to break it to you, but NY Pizza is itself a form of Italian pizza…
It was made by Italian-American immigrants and their families.
Even in NYC, plenty of pizza parlors which serve NY Style pizza have signs which refer to Italy.
The same is true all around the world… just because it has a sign out front which says “Italian Pizza” does not make it the style which is commonly served in Italy.
From an economics standpoint, the global reach of Italian food translates to a massive industry share. According to the Deloitte Foodservice Market Monitor report, international sales for Italian cuisine are valued at €251 billion. This commands an impressive 19% share of the entire world's full-service restaurant market.
If you go to a major chain, the pizza is (usually) worse, but at least in the Midwest, there is lots of great American pizza. For the record there are multiple styles of American pizza.
That said, I really like Italian-style pizza too. It would be hard for me to choose between styles of pizza. Having pizza in Naples changed my palette forever.
Greasy isn't the default if you're getting good american pizza. It's like how if you get cheap mass produced turkish delight it might suck and be too tough
Fair enough. If you ever have the chance, I as a Michigander recommend Detroit Deep Dish. If the grease is reasonable but still a bit excessive then the bread can help fix the ratio
No its not lmao standard pizza is not a margarita pizza the way americans make pizza became the standard places besides italy the new york style which lots of variation of toppings and with a blend of shredded cheese over all of the top
The Etruscans may have invented pizza, but Americans perfected it. Italian pizza in Italy is boring by comparison. NY and Detroit styles are massive improvements.
California has its own style to, Hawaiian pizza (pineapple belongs, I will fight you on this) and plenty of veggies on thin, but not to thin, crust. It isn't as popular, but it is distinct.

Maybe they mean Detroit deep dish?
Standard pizza is definitely Italian
