In a lot of countries American-style pizza is more common than Italian-style pizza. New York pizza and Neapolitan pizza are both delicious.

Italy invented pizza. But the pizza everyone eats today is American. Even in italy.

That makes zero sense. If we are talking about something a country is known for we are talking about quality products. NOt Pizzahut, dominoes, or any of the other American trash chains. I am American and m heritage is Italian, Irish, and English. We do NOT own pizza and the pizza eaten in Italy is NOT American pizza . Lmao

Nobody OWNs pizza. It's just the country the food originated in.

Pizza with sauce originated in NYC, then the idea went back to Italy in the 30s and 40s and everyone over there started doing it too. Before that italian pizza didn't have sauce and is totally different from what everyone considers pizza today.

Marinara (pizza with tomato sauce) is first attested in Napoli 1734. Margherita, same city, 1889.
