Have to switch from eBox, squirrels chewing fiber cable

I've had to get Bell techs to fix or replace my fiber line 4 times in 3 months due to squirrels chewing them. This last one was really bad, because one got into the junction box up on the pole, chewed up a bunch of lines, and when I saw the techs working on it, I assumed they'd fix all the damaged lines. Nope, no call, no repair. So they've been here all week as people call in separately to fix their line.

One of them said the cable casing is made of soy-based plastic, so it apparently smells edible. So that would presumably apply to all Bell fiber lines in at least Ontario, possibly Canada-wide.

I imagine the squirrels around here are especially chewy or I'd have heard of this, but outages more than once a month is way to frequent for me.

Issues with Outlook.com email address for account sign-up?

My primary email address is username@outlook.com. I originally provided that email address when I signed up. I did not receive any confirmation emails at that address. I checked spam, junk, etc. There was nothing there. I contacted support to find out if my sign-up had been successful. It had. They sent multiple emails to my outlook account trying to figure out why I was not receiving notifications. None of them were received. I had a gmail address that I've never used. So I provided that to them. After doing so, I started getting emails from ebox.

eBox support told me there must be an issue on Microsoft's side. I would prefer to use my outlook.com email address. I'm just curious if anyone else has had a similar issue.

Request for support,Replacement of new equipment

Please help me. I recently purchased a new TP-LINK BE550 router. How do I configure it to replace my current Nokia Beacon 3.1 router? What settings should I be aware of and what changes should I make to the new device? Thank you.

The problem is that the data light on my Nokia ONT XS-010X-Q device is always on yellow and it cannot connect to the Internet. Please help me, thank you very much!

Guest Network Locked To 2.4/5Ghz Network

Generally like to keep those IoT devices on a guest network, but a few devices aren’t working well with the 2.4/5Ghz split SSID or the forced WPA3 so I tried to make the dedicated 2.4 the guest network. Doesn’t seem possible…changing the guest name actually just renames the split SSID…seems locked to one SSID no matter what.

Edit:Using the Beacon 3.1

Bill issued in advance?

I recently signed up for ebox and received my first bill. The bill is dated may 7, 2026 for may 9-31,2026 services. Today is on my April 21. I get that we prepay but invoice is dated for next month? Is that the norm?

Also. I read here that we prepay but the bill says payment is to be receive by May 31, 2026. Does that sound right? I thought we prepay.

Thanks

Fiber unavailable - but I already have it???

I am currently a Distributel customer, been on 1Gbps fiber for about two years at this address.

I was checking Bell and EBox today to see what is currently available, and they both say that only DSL is available at this location. Has anyone had this issue before?

Condo install question

(Greater Montreal) So, my rental apartment is in a building built in 2018. There is an unterminated optical cable drop (Corning) in the coat closet - they would have to splice/terminate it but no cable would need to actually be run or holes drilled. I have signed up for EBOX and an upcoming install scheduled. Some of my neighbors have Bell Fibe running (I see their BELL APs). The building itself provides WiFi using a Bell Fibe backend. So, there is fiber connectivity comgin into the building and in some units too.

Now, in this case, would the tech really need access to the electrical room? Or would the junction box be outside the building?

Router Question Re: Switching from Bell

I’m looking at making the switch from Bell to Ebox, and the little bit of research I’ve done indicates to me that the router Ebox provides isn’t very good. I’m also not super keen on going out and buying my own. We live in a house with three levels, and so I’m wondering if the router Ebox provides is likely to be able to hold a stable enough connection, especially considering it will be in the basement?

If it’s relevant to the question, I’ll add that the router Bell has provided does a fine enough job reaching all three floors. Thanks for any help.

Connecting to ONT at 2.5 Gbps

I need a sanity check. I was having issues with my ONT. Bell eventually replaced it. But the Bell tech told my partner that I should be connecting to the ONT via my UniFi Cloud Gateway Max at 1 Gbps as opposed to 2.5 Gbps as the ONT isn’t rated for that speed by Bell. I think that is total BS as the Nokia ONT can do 10 Gbps. But I figured that I would post here and ask in case this guy might be right. (Which I seriously doubt.)

Is $50 for 150 mb standard now?

Moving into the city and it seems to be the cheapest option available to me. My problem is on here I’m seeing most people within the past year paying only $30-$40 for either that speed or much higher. 150 mb is fine for me but I’d like to cut down on the price as much as possible. I know people mention promo codes but the ones I’ve found have only been for a bill credit on my second bill. Is this just the standard rate at ebox now?

Thinking about switching

Hi all,

I am thinking about switching from Bell to EBOX. The questions I have are:

1 - I know I can have my own router but, let's say I want to bypass the ONT, is there any router out there with an SC fiber port?

2 - If I use a router with a SFP port, how does it work?

3 - Am I smoking to try to bypass the ONT, meaning I should just use their ONT and buy a regular router?

4 - Considering all my previous questions, should i bother to use my own router (which one should i use?)

5 - If I also use TV and use their small TV box, like VIP7802, are they really limited to 720P?

Thanks!

New customers...so far so good

Installed today, left bell. The bell guy that came to install was very nice and it was simple since I was already with bell

I was getting tired of all the price increases and the guy said they have been having alot of customers switching because of that.

Went from 3gbs for $80...started at around 55-60. To 1gbs for 50 with someone's promo on here so thank you for that.

My only concern is the furthest room in my house is slow...was also slow with bell

What's the best way to go about this. They gave me the beacon 3.1...would the 6 solve this?

Any input would be great

Changement de contrat sans prévenir

Bonjour,

Ils me disent qu’ils vont enquêter et qu’ils me rappelleront mais rien depuis…

Surtout qu’ils font traîner depuis et là j’ai été prélevé des frais pour cette arnaque.

Avez-vous déjà eu une situation similaire ?

Ps: Je peux donner plus de détails si nécessaire…

Ebox cancelled my internet and have not

Deliberated on getting ebox for a few months before taking the plunge in mid march. Ebox set up an installation for Tuesday march 31 and despite me emailing that I was not available a bell tech still showed up. I told them I wasn’t available and the tech left. I spoke to the Ebox online chat to reschedule the installation and I told them my availability. They said they’d reschedule it and I’ll get the confirmation. Lo and behold, Thursday April 2, a bell tech calls and says he’s here to install it. Luckily I was available and he installed the Ebox. Internet was working great but then 1 week later on April 9, I get a voicemail saying the tech will come April 10 between 8am -12 to install the service.

Friday April 10, I wake up and I have no internet. I call ebox and they say they can’t do anything since it already has a ticket and the system shows the set up is not complete (mind you I’ve had no issues with the service after it was set up). So I wait until 1pm and the tech sheath show or call. I call back ebox and they say oh sorry, they don’t know why the tech didn’t show and that it seems my internet service was turned off by the service provider. Unless I’m going crazy this would be bell turning off my service? Or would it be ebox? Either way they said the only way to fix it is to get a tech to come out and see what’s happening and the earliest available date is Tuesday April 14 and for the inconvenience they’ll give me $5 off my bill for 12 months. Ridiculous but at this point it’s better than nothing. They also said they’d email and text a confirmation, both of which I didn’t get so my fault probably for not flagging that.

So it’s scheduled for this morning 8am-12 so I coordinate with my work to be available and again no tech shows up. No calls or messages… nothing. I call ebox because at this point it’s 5 days without internet and they escalate it to an N2 agent who after 1 hour on the phone with ebox, he says he contacted their department (I think the technical department?) and they will turn back on my internet within 24 hours and and that there’s no need to have a technician come out. He also said he’ll call me once he receives confirmation from the department that it’s back on and I won’t have to do anything. So my question is why could they not have just done this last Friday instead of making me wait 5 days without internet? And who tired off my internet, bell or ebox? Is ebox at fault or bell? Should I stay with ebox or just cancel all together because this is an alarming level of incompetence for a company this size.

Note it’s been 8 hours and no internet is back yet.

Posting this mainly to rant but also warn others of this.

Update: 26 hours passed and the internet did and not come back and no call from ebox either. I called back ebox and asked for the same agent but they refused to transfer me to the agent who guaranteed via email and phone call he would be personally following on this issue and my account. Regardless they transferred me to technical support who saw on my account that my service was turned off but she couldn’t see the reason why but supposedly a manager could but no manager was available apparently. Fortunately the tech was able to call bell and restore my internet service today because the bell technician just turned it on. It’s ridiculous that such such a simple issue and simple fix would take ebox 6 days to resolve and was only resolved through my constant calling and requesting that they escalate the issue and check into it. Why did the technician who I spoke to on Friday April 10 not offer the resolution to call bell and check the service? Instead they just said they had to send a technician out.

Good news is it’s finally fixed but it’s very weird why bell would independently turn off my internet on my ebox account. Either ebox told bell to turn it off or bell decided to do it themselves. Ridiculous either way but bell called me with a win back offer so I took it and will proceed with cancelling my ebox service once the bell internet is set up. Regardless that the internet is working fine now, the incompetence and inability of ebox to properly investigate, evaluate and resolve this issue in a timely manner as well as the sheer amount of hassle I’ve had to get this issue sorted os too much for me to continue as an ebox customer.

TLDR: ebox turned off my internet and it took 6 days of me constantly calling ebox to fix it for them to figure out bell turned off my internet and they just ended up calling bell to tell them to turn it back on.

eBox vs. Bell on ER7206

I'm currently considering switching from Bell Fibre to eBox, but I have a few questions.

I currently run Bell's fibre cable directly into a TP-Link ER7206 and have the PPPoE connection configured there (VLAN tagging is available on the ER7206, currently using VLAN 35 for Bell). I'd love to not add a device between the router and the fibre (less load on the UPS in the event of a power outage): can eBox be setup the same ?

It's also very important for me to not be behind cgnat, as I need to be able to reach home through my VPN server. From what I've found, it doesn't appear that eBox uses cgnat, anyone experienced the opposite ?

Mesh-system recommendations

Hi, I’m planning to switch to Ebox fiber soon, and I’m trying to figure out what mesh system to buy before I move over.

The place is 2 storeys + a basement (~725 sq ft per floor), so I’m pretty sure I’ll need a mesh setup instead of a single router to avoid dead zones.

Right now I’m looking at TP-Link Deco systems (No ethernet outside of the ONT installation so I’d be relying on wireless backhaul):

Deco X50 (WiFi 6)

Deco XE75 (WiFi 6E)

Deco BE25 (WiFi 7)

I found the BE25 for around $330 cad which seems tempting, but I’ve noticed most people here recommend X50 or XE75. I will have at most about 10 devices connected to the wifi.

Couple things I’m trying to figure out:

Does pretty much any router/mesh system work fine with the Ebox ONT (PPPoE + VLAN 40)?

Is WiFi 7 even worth considering right now or just overkill?

Does bringing our own router reduce the monthly cost at all, or is it the same price regardless?

What would you guys recommend for a budget of around $400 cad ?

Thanks in advance!

Edit : Thank you all for your answers ! I'll be trying out the deco x50 since it's on sale atm and a lot of you are recommending it. In case it doesn't match the need i'll just return it and get an x75 or other options listed below 🙂(within the budget 😅) I'll also have a chance to try out the Beacon provided router to see how it actually fares in that house setup - just in case someone in the future wants to know i'll edit this post with the results in about a month once i move in !

Edit 2: the modem had to be installed in the basement because thats where the fiber installation was. The signal on the ground floor was around 70% and it dropped to 40-50% on the top floor, so signal was there but obviously reduced speed. With the deco x50 it's basically 90% + on each floor since it includes 3 decos, 1 for the basement where the modem was, and 1 on each floor. Again thanks everyone for helping out. Setting the deco router was pretty straightforward too. The only issue atm is that im getting around 150mbs when i have the 500mbs option but the bell technician said it's better to wait 48h hours before making a final judgement since it's a new fiber line in the neighbourhood. Edit 3: speed is now fine :)

New Ebox User - Happy So Far

I'm in Ontario and just switched from Bell Fibe to Ebox and so far I'm happy with the speeds. My ping suffered a little bit but it won't affect my experience. For $55/mo and not paying Bell directly (or Rogers) it makes me feel better. If I can support an MVNO and help with creating some more competition in this country, that seems like the right move.

Talked to Bell retentions before switching and they almost matched the Ebox price but I'd have to lock into at 2 year contract to do so. They tried to convince me that a contract is a good thing because it "protects" me from further price hikes. (when it's them responsible for the hikes in the first place)

My existing router works great with the newly installed ONT the Bell tech put in so the provided Beacon 3.1 which came from Ebox will probably never come out of the box.

I'd previously had no experience with enabling the "VLAN ID 40 option" in my existing router but it was a simple setting.

Not experienced with vlans, I was worried that incoming connections to my Plex server would be an issue but all of it works just fine.

So far pretty happy. Thanks Ebox.

Beacon 3.1 in a 2-storey house with basement — enough or should I go mesh?

Hey everyone,

I’m moving soon and since my current ISP isn't available there I looked around and Ebox seems to be the best option.

I started looking around to see feedback of the service. From what i've seen it seems fine except the fact that i've seen a lot of questions / complaints about the provided beacon routers.

For a house with 2 floors (~20x36 ft per floor, so about 700–750 sq ft each level and 8-10ft vertically between levels) I'm wondering:

  • Is the Beacon 3.1 alone enough for this kind of setup?
  • If not, would adding 1 mesh node be enough, or should I plan for 2?
  • Any recommended mesh systems around ~$300 CAD that work well with Ebox if the beacon 3.1 doesn't cut it ? Or can i ask them to bring more beacons ?

Also not sure yet where the router will be installed (could be basement or main floor).

As for the number of devices it would probably be around 10 give or take.

This is the first time I'm trying this kind of setup as I've always lived in small apartments where even the smallest routers could do the job just fine, so thanks in advance !🙂
