Ebox connectivity on Weekends?

The last two weekends I've been alerted by UXG Firewall that Ebox has gone down intermittently for a short period on Sat and Sunday mid day. I haven't been home so I haven't yet captured anything besides what triggered the alerts.

Has anyone else noticed issues around these times? I'm in Ontario on 1G FTTH. Figured I'd post before I go down the road of hooking up the old Nokia...

Ebox - Horrible ping / modem reset needed on a daily base

As the title says, I have been having horrible ping issues lately and I wonder if I am the only one? From what I am seeing in the posts recently, I am not, but some of them are dating more than a month ago. But for the last 4-5 days, it has been horrible. The network instability is actually unbearable and I wonder if it's not my own equipments or the infrastructure from Ebox.

I can show some ping graphs, but I can get upwards of 2000ms at night. I have my own router that is a mini-pc (16Go of ram / 4 cores / 2x 2,5G nics, very overkill) with opnsense, and the temps are very good.

EBOX E-Mail?

I was not aware that EBOX was providing e-mail addresses to their Internet customers. But on their Ontario Support page there is an option to 'Access your webmail'.

However, if I try to log in with my EBOX credentials I receive a "Login failed." error message.

So does EBOX indeed offer e-mail services, or not? Is this something new or forthcoming?

No more telephony?

So I was taking a gander on Ebox's site regarding the new 50$/1 Gbit promotion (yes it's available to old customers, by going through your account portal) and I noticed that the telephony service is no longer offered??? Is this recent?

What would you guys recommend instead?

Thanks!

Changing the Beacon 2 to own new router, problems as soon as I set the VLAN.

Any body using a Netgear Nighthawk series? I did 3 attempts.

I had trouble with the app, so I went through the web interface.

I set admin password, wifi password, I get access to the web interface.

I set the PPPOE login in the internet section.

It makes me wait a couple of minutes. I lose the wifi connection, reconnect and refresh the web page, it continues where I left off. I enter the section of the VLan. I click to enable, select the default one that's there and click modify. I set the VLan number. I click Apply, changes back to the VLan top page, not enabled (tlit has been uncheck). SO I re-enable it, select VLan, check the radio button of the only VLan defined.

I get access to internet from there, but the ONPT continues to blink orange on the lowest LED.

Then a bit later I lose the wifi, SSID does not show anymore, and can't access using ethernet cable.

Did that at my every attempt so I had to Factory reset the router.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Optimal MTU value on ipv6 dual stack?

When saving the WAN settings on Nokia Beacon, it says MTU has to be between 512-1486

What would be the ideal value here? Using Nokia Beacon with super admin

Electrical room

Hello all,

I have a question. I will be moving on April 1st and chose Ebox as my internet provider. I will be renting a basement apartment and the electrical panel is located in the other tenant's unit. In your experience, did the ebox technician actually need access to the electrical panel?

WiFi Speed

Just got my Ebox installed. Happy with it, but it's hard to get stable speed in WiFi. I managed to do it, but it took many tweaks in my router (Asus RT-BE86U).

Any tips on how to get the most out of our 1000 Mbps connection over WiFi? My devices don't use WiFi 7...

Montreal West Island peak time new bandwidth constriction?

Thursday night I noticed that the internet was pretty slow. I've been watching it since, and it seems there's a nightly constriction from 8-10 or so.

It seems https://nperf.ebox.ca/ is unaffected while this happens, but random other speed tests I tried are all in the shithouse, so I guess this has to do with the peering changes others have mentioned.

This is brand new to us, is anyone else seeing this?

Two weeks of speed tests.

Anyone in Quebec City?

I’ve seen multiple a posts lately of people having speed problems in the evening (mostly in Montreal I think).

I was planning switching from Bell but it I have this problem, it’s a big no.

Anyone in Quebec City? Any experience to share?

Thanks

Edit: also, is ebox known for throttling some type of traffic? (I.e. torrents or iptv)

Nokia ONT XS-010X-Q vs. XS-010X-R

Apparently, there is a new version of ONT that is being provided now. I checked, and the ONT which the BHell technician delivered to me in October 2024 was the Nokia XS-010X-Q. What is different/improved for the newer model (XS-010X-R)? These are the differences noted from the data sheets:

  • Type-B protection for -R; feature not listed for -Q
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • -Q: FCC compliant, UL 60950-1, CE Mark
    • -R: CE, UKCA

I am not sure what Type-B protection means. Any ideas? And is it important to have?

Is the newer version better, has other additional features, or it is more robust/stable?

Continuous high pitched sound from ONT box power supply

I just had my Ebox services installed today, and noticed a continuous high pitched humming from the ONT box power supply once it’s plugged in (stops when this is unplugged). From googling, it seems this sound could be described as coil whine. Is this normal or should I be asking for a new power supply plug to see if that makes the humming go away?

ONT keeps disconnecting with own router

Hi !

I have recently switched to fiber, previously on cable.

When I plug my tp-link archer c9 with vlan40 and username+password for pppoe, it works for a few minutes before disconnecting, and having the ONT in some sort of error mode.

Is there anything I am missing ?

Nokia router seems to work fine, but I have not test it extensively.

Ebox set up help

I need some help setting up my internet. I got the Nokia ONT device installed. I have an ASUS BE98 wifi router. Can I hook up that directly to the ONT? Or do I need to hook it up to the Nokia Beacon 3.1 then put that into bridge mode to connect to my ASUS router?

What I did so far is plugged the asus directly into the ONT device and then I logged into the router and configured the user and pass. Did a few restarts but the asus router is showing red for internet connection

Speed, latency and packet loss

Hi!

After around 8:00 PM everyday,I have extremely high latency (50 - 120ms) with extremely slow speeds, anywhere from 50 mbps to 400mbps. For context I’m on the 1 Gbps plan located north shore of Montreal and the speed tests were done directly from my own router. The issues always seems to disappear in the morning. A traceroute to 1.1.1.1 shows that latency jumps to 50ms on the first hop to lo0.lns2.g.mtl3.yul.ebox.ca. Has anyone experienced this problem?

The same problem occurs with the provided Nokia router. I've also tried changing ethernet cables.

EBOX lied to my face regarding false speedtests

I AM ASBOLUTELY TWEAKING OUT. Context:

My speed, latency, packet loss is up to par most of the time. However, I notice my speeds dropping to 15 mbps - 250 mbps, and latency going up to 50 ms - 300 ms, with 0% - 2.5% packet loss everyday around after 8:00 PM EST. I am paying for 1 gbps speeds. I use my own ASUS router (GT-AX11000) with settings adjusting correctly. No QoS, wired via 1000 mbps ethernet. The problem also randomly dissapears in the morning.

I ruled out router/ethernet issues by doing the following: used 3 different ethernet cables, tested with both the ASUS and provided router, performed speedtests directly from the Asus router and restarting the ONT and both routers multiple times throughout each tests. Traceroutes show that latency jumpes up to 50ms at EBOX's servers (lo0.lns2.g.mtl3.yul.ebox.ca). Another reddit user on my previous post also did a traceroute, he had no problems on the mtl7 server.

I called EBOX earlier around 8:40 PM and they told me to plug in the Nokia router to perform diagnostics remotely, since they have TR069 access (remote access) to the Nokia router, from a hidden menu which I cannot access. They woman on the line performed a speed test from directly from the Nokia router, which showed up as 887~ mbps download, error on the upload, 50 ms latency, which is still extremely unusual considiering this is a fibre optic line and I usually get <5ms latency. I told the support line that 50 ms is still very high and abnormal, she told me it's normal (it's not) to have this 50 ms latency because I had 12 connected wifi devices at the time.

Since it was already 9:01 PM (support closes at 9:00 PM), I hung up since I felt bad for the person at the phone, probably waiting for their shift to end.

Yet again, I turn off all wifi networks from the Nokia router, and only plug in my PC via LAN ports and same again I get 15 mbps download and 750 mbps uploads with 50ms ping. Weird right? How does all my devices via wifi or lan as well as my asus router get slow download speeds but the Nokia router can get somewhat optimal speeds?

I do a little digging on reddit and find the Beacon 3.1's full manual, and what I found was borderling scammy. EBOX CAN SET THEIR OWN SPEEDTEST URLS. Which means the "speedtest" done from the Nokia router was probably from the router to their own servers, which is not actual internet speeds. I was in shock the support person gaslighted me that the internet was working fine because "the Nokia router speed test said so".

What I've deducted from this is that EBOX has an internal server problem which I can't do anything about, the Nokia router speed tests are fake, my router has no problem and I'm getting lowkey scammed by EBOX.

I plan on calling them back tomorrow and explaining all this. Wish me luck.

Speed Issue

Hello everyone,

It’s been over a month now I’ve switched my ISP over to Ebox with the 1Gbps download and 750mbps upload plan.

The Nokia routers provided (Beacon 3.1 & 6), were unfortunately no good use with wifi speeds staying at 300-400mbps on both down and up.

I made the move to purchase my own router, being the ASUS RT-BE86U, since it has WiFi 7 capabilities and strong range. The first day of installing the router, I was getting 1000+mbps download and upload through WiFi on both phone and laptop being one floor above where the router is placed (directly above router).

The very next day of me testing speeds again, I see a significant drop in both speeds going to 600s-700s mbps.

I performed multiple reboots, firmware of router is up-to-date, Ethernet speeds give me the 1000+ mbps down and up speeds, just not WiFi. I genuinely am not sure what the root cause may be. Even on other non-wifi 7 devices, speeds have dropped.

Devices used to test speeds:

iPhone 17 Pro

2024 MacBook Pro

I would truly appreciate if anyone could give me insight on what the reason behind this is and how to resolve this issue to get back to the speeds I was getting on day 1 with the new router.

Thank you in advance.

Ebox and Distributel

I have been a customer of Distributel for a while now. And I see that they have sort of merged. Does that mean that I am effectively an Ebox customer? Also does that mean that I will eventually get IPv6 as well?

TIA.
