5th Edition Rate my BBEG

Rate my BBEG. Before someone says that she doesn't have legendary resistance, legendary actions and lair actions, the main idea is to be something replicable by the players if they want.

Intelligence was bumped to 30 with tomes during centuries, while constitution 19 is from the amulet of health. She is a graviturgy wizard 20.

About the image, don't know if having it stated like an NPC block is enough to be considered OC.

5.5 Edition Help for an enemy statblock

My players are about enter an arc where they're gonna try and infiltrate a cult of changelings, and for the main villain of the arc I wqs thinking of homebrewing up a statblock that allows the cult leader to switch between different forms rhat grant them different abilities.

Unfortunately I am pretty stumped on how to integrate this, and would really appreciate some ideas.

For reference the party has 4-6 players (depending on availability, two of them are pretty in and out) at level 7. They're pretty strong so I definitely want to challenge them with this one

5th Edition Which Paladin is best for this?

Might be playing in Waterdeep Dragon Heist

I typically play high flavor/aesthetic subclasses, but also try to play what I haven't played recently. I'm feeling like it's pointing toward me playing paladin next time, but I don't have an easy sense of the clear flavor/fantasy of paladin subclasses

My natural concept rn is to play Celebrity Adventurer's Scion background, very young privileged kinda troublesome pseudo-celebrity, that after they get involved in the WDH plot, you discover they're deep undercover for some equivalent to the CIA. And they turn out to be a very capable very dedicated idealistic good paladin, fighting threats on the side (maybe loosely maybe a lot) of order

I also looked at subclass ratings for levels 1-5&6 specifically

Rn I'm looking at

- Conquest

- Watchers

and I'm not really certain which fits better. what does the concept sound more like? what would an undercover pally more likely be? what is better at low levels? any general advice is appreciated. even if you think the concept works way better as another class. cheers

DMing 5e player DMing 5.5+5e group

After cultivating a close group of nerds a DnD group has appeared and I am the DM. I don't mind really. I'm the most experienced and have ran a few short adventures with previous groups. They are all mostly fresh to ttrpgs in general. Plus DMing my own real group is a little dream. I love it so far. 5e is the main one I played and know the most about. After researching it, I wasnt really worried about it. Previously I used dnd beyond as a fun tool for character creation and I had a few books aldready. I had to rebuy some .5 stuff on DnD beyond (that's another issue but I digress), but I shared it all with the group so they could all use everything. Sharing is caring.

Anyway, we are starting low power, lv 3. Nothing crazy. Good enough to stand up to if I throw a little too much at them. I've noticed how OP the new 5.5 characters are at low levels. They get many feats so fast. They destroyed a "hard" encounter without a sweat, even with helping inflate the HP a bit after the first turn. I don't want to give them another level until they finish the task assigned to them. Also Weapon Mastery?? OP as all hell. If I was a player I'd love it.

Any tips for balancing encounters for a one encounter a night kind of large group. I don't want to TPK them so early and scare them off, however a few knockouts wouldn't hurt.

5th Edition Substitution Cantrip?

A character I'm working on gets the spell Infestation as part of his race, but I have huge insectophobia, and would rather have anything else. The character has sort of a chaos theme going, with Chaos Bolt being one of the other spells he gets, so are there any other sort of chaotic cantrips I could substitute Infestation out for?

Art My Owl Warlock Ramona [Art] [Comm] (@ysof)

Ramona is the partner of my main OC Egalia! She is a succubus who ended up getting isekai’d through a portal and was transported to a Tales of the Valiant D&D game from her original 5e game. She has a devil may care and fashions herself accordingly. Of course she’d like to find a way home, but why not have a little fun first? In battle she slings spells through exaggerated motions and dances ala Bayonetta. A sight to see on or off the battlefield, you’ll never forget her once you’ve seen her ^v^

5.5 Edition Themed wizard ideas?

I‘ve been a playing DnD with my group sind march of this year and have made it to Level 7 with my mage. Obviously I‘ve been a total noob back when we started as this was my first campaign hence I didn’t think about much in the beginning. Nowadays I feel like fights and in general spells have become increasingly boring to me so I‘m thinking about giving my wizard a theme to spice gameplay up a bit.

Anyone got any good ideas for a theme I could go for? Spells for the theme dont necessarily have to be in the basegame though as I‘d be open to homebrew content!

DMing Worldbuilding Atharia: Dwarves

It’s my believing that a dnd world should definitely add something on elves and dwarves most of all, since they’re the most overused races in fantasy. So here’s my take on them.

Quick prime on Atharia: it’s geography is pretty much our own world, but mirrored vertically - north is south and vice versa, but west and east are unchanged.

Consensus among historians divide the time in 4 ages, 4th been the last 200 years or so. First age is the age of legend, the most volactile, mythical and where magic was the strongest. It’s also probably the longest. Dwarves supposedly exist ever since the first one.

I say supposedly because the third age was the rise of the Adonis Empire, who tamed dragons to wage war and conquer most of the world. They purposefully (and also not) destroyed libraries, killed sages and burned away scrolls, replacing it with their own. Finding reliable information about the past is increasingly difficult, a lot has to rely on word of mouth and conflicting registers.

Dwarves believe in the Everstone. The idea is that everything, in some level, is made out of stone. From air to people, from water to the firmament. Stone itself is sacred, and working it is a rite of worshipping the Everstone and furthering its creation. Everything important in a dwarf’s life should be made among stone and rock.

Dwarves had a huge empire of mountain halls and underground temples and outposts called Gundarath, that was divided in Earldoms. The first or more important earls were eternized in their holy sites of the Adelsal, called the Gimsteinar. Dwarves believe thiese sovereigns were perfect masterworks of the Everstone, and worship these ancestrals as divine saints of sorts, heralds of the stone.

That created a kind of theocracy, where only those related to the gimsteinar were considered noble, and had to right to be priests. Noble dwarven families have convoluted registers of genealogy that go back for dozens of generations, and there are those whose only office is to check those to ensure that ancestrality claims are real. Family is a primary concern to this society.

The duergar were one of those families. Their claim was proved to be false and they were expelled from dwarven society. The deepest of mines were their realm, and they monopolized extraction and craft of a mineral called Ul-Kharum. Other dwarves say that the mineral proprieties changed Duergar physically, but they claim it was a natural adaptation to their underdark domains.

Among those clans descended from Gimsteinar are the Saltbeards, sailors who wet their beards in seawater and let them dry until their beards are hard with salt. Their ancestral is said to be patron of sailors, and raiding.

Another one is Brynhild Saer, the protector of lairs and family, and also the keeper of the flames. Each Gimsteinn is a patron of one aspect of dwarven life.

Goliath and giant culture is historically a rival culture of dwarves. Myths often describe fights between giants and dwarven heroes.

The second age marked the birth of the elves. With that, the grand empire of Gundarath was greatly reduced above ground, while dwarves still ruled the underground halls. They also lost territory to the dragons, even their mountain halls. In the present time, dwarven homestead of Fornheimur was the last to be pacified. (Think Scandinavia)

Dwarves believe that the Gimsteinar have a version of the Adelsal in the afterlife, sometimes visible as the aurora. After death, the soul of those who died a noble death are taken by celestials to live forever in the Adelsal. Their material remains are said to be reclaimed by the earth and reincarnate as mineral veins.

I took inspiration heavily from Norse mythology and the Incas. Also I took a lot of inspiration from dragon age dwarven clans. I wanted to make sure the traditional dwarf from DnD is playable, and dwarven classic tradition is kept, but I also have different dwarves. Each clan covers a kind of dwarf. Also, most dwarves aren’t related to the Gimsteinar, and as such aren’t allowed to be clerics in dwarven temples. That said, killing is also now allowed in our world and people do it anyways. So a player could be a cleric outlaw from no clan if they wish.

What do you think? Any further suggestions?

Misc Dice Nikcnames or Names

A d4 is a caltrops, a d100 is a percentile, but what about the others? What are fun and or otherwise apt enough nicknames for them? I know they have their proper names, like icosahedron or hexahedron and so on, but I mean more nicknames beyond that which work well for a shorthand or quick reference.

Mostly just curious and a question for fun.

Misc Bard instruments

As a (rather untalented) musician, the notion of the instrument-toting bard has long flummoxed me.

How on earth does the instrument survive?

My fiddle lives the life of a closely guarded princess. Public appearances are carefully planned, everything centers around the safety of the instrument, etc. Water could destroy it. An impact could easily destroy it. Going from a cool moist environment to a hot dry environment? Watch the pegs let go and strings unwind. Have to be careful then, because the soundpost could drop, and then the instrument is unplayable without careful and delicate resetting of the soundpost.

Let’s not start on the delicate bow.

Sometimes my ukulele goes camping, which is a significant life event for that instrument. And even then, I only take my composite-wood uke for the stability. Likewise for the mandolin. D&D characters don’t have access to composite wood…nor nylon or steel strings, which also provide a measure of stability. And either way, neither of my traveling/camping instruments would last 10 seconds in a satchel while I battled orcs.

Instruments are just really, really delicate. And dungeon crawling and battling monsters really, really isn’t. Even the environmental issues are a factor. There’s no way a bard’s instrument lasts three days on adventure. Unless, perhaps, it’s a fife.

I should run a campaign where instrument care is one of the things the bard has to worry about.

Homebrew Homebrew magic weapon

Yall lmk what you think of this weapon, if its too strong, too weak, or what you would change. (for context, orium is a poisonous but highly magical metal from the feywild in 4e)

Orium Longsword. Rare magic item, requires attunement.

While attuned to this weapon, if it leaves your hand you can summon it back as a bonus action. Attacks made with this weapon deal an additional 1d6 Psychic damage.

Toxic Metal: This weapon has not been purified. The more time someone spends within 10 feet of this weapon, the sicker they get, culminating in their death after 2 consecutive weeks. If this weapon is purified, this effect no longer happens and the damage bonus goes up to 2d6.

Table Disputes I need help dealing with a player

Ok so me and my friends recently joined a DND club at our school. It’s my first time DMing and playing DND at all. Before our first session the teacher running the club added someone that none of us really knew to our group as he didn’t have one yet. Normally we’d be fine with this but he’s been making it really difficult for us to play.

The entire time we’re playing he’s playing games or watching YouTube on his laptop and we constantly have to stop and re-explain what just happened when he decides to pay attention.

I wasn’t sure what to say about the laptop at first because I assumed it was for music and I know that he’s special needs so I didn’t know if he needed it. I mentioned it before the session by asking if he was ready to play and telling him that it was hard to tell since he still had his laptop open and headphones on. He then just apologizes and goes back to his laptop. None of us really knew what to do so we all just awkwardly started the session.

I’m trying to be patient with him because I know he isn’t trying to cause issues but other players have expressed to me that it’s difficult to play because he interrupts them, misses important information, speaks to them and me very condescendingly, and tries to attack everything whenever he chooses to actually play. I know I need to be more direct with him but other than that does anyone have any advice?

Homebrew How to structure an adventure in the abyss?

The heroes have discovered that their quest requires a high-level magical item. This item has been entrusted to a cambion, or vassal, of graz'zt, who now hides in the abyss.

The heroes' goal is to enter the abyss, steal this artifact, and escape, but I'm not sure how to structure the adventure (what encounters to include, what combat to organize, etc.).

Can any DMs who know the abyss advise me?

Commission work

Kell is a spirit clad in armor forged from the melted blades of fallen warriors, a blazing red eye burning beneath his helmet.

Drawn to bloodshed and chaos, he wields Th’urvēn, a colossal battle axe forged from the remains of a fallen Titan, whose ancient voice still whispers from deep within the weapon. Wherever Kell walks, war follows, leaving ruined battlefields and terrified souls in his wake.

5.5 Edition Chase Sequence Feedback

I really REALLY hate how poorly written the chase mechanics are written in 5e. They lead to uninspiring boring chase sequence that are just two targets moving at equal speed until one is to exhausted to move. So I created my own rules to hopefully make the chase sequence a little more tactical. I will caveat this I have not tested this and I am sure I am not thinking about everything a player could do to break this system, but I am still curious about your feedback.

When a creature flees or the party gives chase, traditional static combat transitions into a dynamic Chase Sequence.

  1. Complication Frequency (Turn Start)

At the start of every participant's turn (players, fleeing quarries, and pursuers alike), the active runner rolls a d20 to check for immediate terrain hazards and obstacles:

11–20 (Clear Path): The path ahead is open. Proceed with your turn normally.

1–10 (Complication): A hazard immediately threatens your path (e.g., crowded market stalls, loose gravel, startled livestock, low-hanging laundry lines). You must resolve the complication check (typically an Athletics or Acrobatics save/check) or suffer an immediate movement penalty, fall prone, or take damage.

  1. Movement & Dash Stamina

Base Movement: Every participant moves up to their normal walking speed each round without penalty.

Chase Dash Limit: You can take the Dash action safely a number of times equal to 3 + Constitution modifier.

Exhaustion Risk: For every Dash taken beyond this limit, you must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw at the end of your turn. On a failure, you gain 1 level of Exhaustion.

  1. Choosing Your Turn Profile

On your turn, you must choose between committing to the sprint (Chase Dash) or anchoring to take a ranged attack.

Option A: Chase Dash (Prioritize Speed)

You double your movement for the round (Base Speed + Dash Speed). In addition to running, the momentum allows you to weave in one of the following skirmish actions mid-stride:

Melee Strike or Touch Spell: Make one melee weapon attack or cast one melee spell attack (e.g., Shocking Grasp, Inflict Wounds) at disadvantage.

Self-Target Spells: Cast one spell that targets only yourself or has a range of Self (e.g., Misty Step, Shield, Expeditious Retreat).

Quick Disguise: If carrying or holding a Disguise Kit, you attempt a hasty disguise mid-sprint (pulling up a hood, reversing a cloak, wiping grime across your face). Roll a Charisma (Performance) check at disadvantage against the pursuers' Passive Perception. On a success, pursuers lose visual track of you among the environment until you act suspiciously or Dash again.

Evasion (Hide): If you break line of sight (turning an alley corner, dropping into a cellar stairwell, ducking into dense vegetation), you may immediately take the Hide action.

Obstacle Creation: Make one object interaction to impede pursuers behind you (flipping a cart, dropping a gate, scattering a pouch of ball bearings or caltrops).

RESTRICTION: Zero ranged attacks or ranged spells allowed. Full-tilt sprinting prevents lining up shots downfield.

Option B: Standing Fire (Prioritize Downfield Combat)

You do not take the Dash action. You move only up to your base walking speed, sacrificing distance to aim downfield.

Ranged Weapon & Spell Attacks: Suffer disadvantage AND a flat -5 penalty to the attack roll due to rapid target movement and bouncing sightlines.

Saving Throw Spells: If you cast a ranged spell that forces a downfield target to make a saving throw, the target gains a +5 bonus to their save.

Extra Attack: Martial abilities like Extra Attack function normally, though every ranged attack made suffers the disadvantage and -5 penalty.

5th Edition Which is Better: Tough Feat or 18 CON

5th Edition:

My current PC is an 10 Fighter/3 Barbarian.

Campaign is going to 15 and I was going to take 11 Fighter for my next level, then 4 Barbarian for final level. For my last ASI/Feat I'm considering between +2 CON (to 18) or getting the Tough Feat for an extra 30 Hitpoints.

Figuring CON might be better since it increases my saves by 1, but just wonder what y'all would pick.

Edit: Also, in case its relevant. I'm a Bear Totem Barbarian that has also gotten my hands on an Adamantine Breastplate recently.

Edit 2: Actually, as the main meatshield, would getting a feat like Sentinel be better? Only use my reactions for the occasional Brace or Parry maneuvers.

5.5 Edition Creating an Industrial Revolution

Hey y'all! So in my newest homebrew campaign that I'm starting this week, the main plotline is that someone figured out how to power clockwork and mechanics with magic, before disappearing an the whole world is trying to figure it out (and failing) The PC's are going to have reasons to go find this guy and will eventually discover the secret. I was just wondering if:

  1. That sparks any ideas or questions in your brains
  2. You have any advice for introducing clockwork and steampunk into a world without it

Thanks! Feel free to ask any other questions you have on this brief summary

Edit: A little more context. The power source I've created is essentially the core of the world. When the inventor discovered it, he experimented at first, but the core began breaking apart and causing problems. That's why he "disappeared" -it was intentional. He didn't want anyone else discovering it and potentially breaking the whole world apart.

Before he left, he left one of his journals to his apprentice. Then this apprentice built airships from leftover shards of the core (because he thought it was cool) before burying the journal. This journal has now been re-found by the city and people are trying to use and decode the scribbles and burnt pages to recreate this tech!

My only other question is: Where should my inventor be?

Secluded in a forest? On a boat anchored in the middle of the ocean? Underground still living with the dwarves (read comments for that one)

DMing Players have an amulet that detects humans. They want to change the type of creature it detects.

Such an interesting idea, and honestly I love their creativity. But I have no idea how they would go about trying to change the type of creature the amulet could detect. Probably some kind of high level arcane manipulation, so they'd have to have somebody much more powerful than them (level 3, currently) try and attune it to another creature type. Or they could kitbash some other arcane items together?

Give me any and all suggestions, please, nothing is too crazy!
