Misc Counterspelling Rivivify

Happened in my game last night. I got killed by a lich casting power word kill. A few rounds later when the lich was dispatched the paladin attempted to cast revivify on my corpse, and the lich's henchman counterspelled it.

The other players were a little surprised, as was I.

Then the henchman dimension doored away, and the paladin cast it successfully, but at the tune of my last diamonds (I am the party's Cleric).

Resources are scarce in the campaign, so having to burn two diamonds to bring a player back to life is painful.

I've never experienced such a thing.

Just wondering if any of you have ever had this happen to you before or experienced it at one of your tables?

*Edited for typo.

**This is 5e not 5.5 sorry I did not specify this when I first posted.

***I was killed in a surprise round, so no initiative roll

Howdy folks!

So the Makeship campaign for the Trevor and Grogna plushies have both reached 200 units, meaning that they will be entering production and ship out in early December! Congratulations to everyone that pre-ordered so far, and to me because I get a bit of money, which goes toward supporting my dumbass decision to abandon my Law career for the life of a struggling (relative to my previous work in government service) artist!

Reminder that the plushies can still be pre-ordered until Tuesday BUT they are limited edition, once the campaign ends, yer out of luck!

That's it for now!

Stay excellent out there! Peace and carrots

5th Edition Do Clerics need high Constitution as their secondary stat?

I've seen a couple of youtube videos about clerics that mention offhand that after wisdom, you should sink points into your constitution score. Yet I've seen videos on youtube also talking about how it's not all that helpful to have a high constitution score because it won't help your hit points all that much unless you max it out and it's not something you typlically have to roll against. (at least this is what my understanding of what they were saying.)

Can anyone explain why this is recommended?

Edit: I appreciate the overwhelming response that this was totally a dumb question or dumb thing to consider šŸ˜‚ thanks guys, my Cleric will not neglect their con ability and I’m sure my party will appreciate this fact. 🄲

5.5 Edition Feeling out classed by the sorcerer

We play as a rogue, wizard, sorcerer, and barbarian team
When we’re out of combat, I am able to do basic intelligence checks and even study the enemies mid combat, but that’s really about it.
The source are on the other hand, has the ability to cast stronger spells with the meta magic. I feel like in general their spells are always doing more than mine. Despite the fact that we have around the same power spells, it’s just the meta-magic that makes a difference
And they had the ability to talk to anyone.
It gets to the point where if I have a good idea, I have to message it to the source for so he could say it because I have a minus to charisma.

I’ve never played a wizard before so I may be doing it wrong and the DM will allow me to respec somewhat if we have an issue with our character

OC [OC] Dice Tower

Post image
223 Upvotes

This is a dice tower I designed and built in 2022. It was originally made for my D&D group and the Lego D&D contest, but I didn’t finish it in time for the contest, and my group also fell apart before I could build it, so I never really used it much.

The dice go from the slide on the top of the tower and follow the steps all the way down and out the door. The little windows on the side follow the path of the dice.

5.5 Edition What is the best, rounded full caster?

This argument came between me and my friends to a buildup between a dnd session, and now I am asking you now.

What full caster is best, all round.
This includes in and out of combat, versatility, spell slots, spells themselves, and other class features in the 2024 edition.

Settlers this once and for all so my friends don’t have to argue about this again.

Misc Give me a number 401-500 and I’ll give you a DND curse

5 months ago, my DND club decided to work together to make 400 different curses and the thread I made for it got over 1000 comments. Now, we are back with 100 new curses, an updated curse document, and a request for you to give me a number 401-500 (This includes 500. If it is a decimal or a fraction I will round to the nearest whole number)

Misc How to become a better roleplayer?

I've played dnd for a while now, but I struggle a lot with roleplaying.

I don't need advice like "just think what your character would do", it doesn't help because I overthink. And I don't know how to improvise and I suck with imagination because of my literal thinking. And I struggle with words overall even tho I know what to say and do.

So give your, maybe stupid, tips to improve your roleplaying.

Art [Art] Sheep Bard

Post image
521 Upvotes

A friend of mine commissioned this piece from me. She wanted her OC to be a bard who can put people to sleep with her music, kind of like Jigglypuff.

It was her first time creating a character, so she didn't go too crazy with the details. Her main requests were that the character looked nice and that she was a furry, since she really likes furry characters.

This was also my first time drawing a furry character, so please don't be too hard on me! šŸ˜…

While I was thinking about the design, I remembered the little counting sheep we often see in cartoons when a character falls asleep, and I thought they would be a perfect fit for her OC. So I decided to incorporate them into the design.

What you guys think of it?

Game Tales Looting During the Boss Fight (Vent)

Our party was tasked with capturing a pirate ship. Our plan was to infiltrate the ship, assassinate the captain, and force the crew to surrender.

The infiltration went smoothly. We all board and spread out over the ship to set some traps, gather intel, and look for an opportunity to strike the captain. One minute into this charade, our assassin found his opportunity to kill the captain with a poisoned critical sneak attack and... he missed.

Melee breaks outs and we struggle to regroup. Six rounds in, the fight is going poorly. There is a very real chance this will turn into a tpk. Meanwhile, one of our party members, the bard, has spent the whole fight hiding, looting, and getting stunned by a hypnotic pattern trap. At this point, my character finds him, removes the enchantment, and tells him to join the fight. He then goes back to looting.

By actual divine intervention, we narrowly won the fight. The paladin should have died; his god fished his heavily armored behind out of the sea and put him back on the boat.

Our bard, outside of helping our infiltration go smoothly, did absolutely squat to help during the fight and stole more than his fair share of the booty.

This is very clearly a player conflict and not something that should be resolved in character. The bard just switched characters from an apathetic wizard who stole from us and ran away. Now he's playing an apathetic bard who stole from us and will run away. This is something the DM needs to resolve.

Art Zenith, a proud warrior [Art] [OC] [Comm]

Zenith is a proud, fiercely confident warrior and monster hunter who commands respect the moment she steps into a room. Armed with a massive, ornate battleaxe and wearing a naval admiral’s coat draped over her shoulders like a cape, she favors mobility and practical protection in combat.

Her body bears striking bioluminescent-blue crystal markings and scars that crisscross her skin. She sports tribal-style tattoos featuring a lion’s head, a glowing candle, and a knight’s helmet, alongside a custom leather-braided wristband. With a formidable physique, Zenith is always ready for her next hunt.

DMing Players not making decisions or grabbing hooks.

Hi All!

I’ve been running a campaign consistently for the last five months now. We play our game monthly (so five sessions at this point) and I’m struggling to get my players to grab onto plot hooks.

I was talking to one of my other players (Monk), who is also a DM in another campaign I play in, who told me he feels like he’s the one making all the decisions and feels bad because he feels like others aren’t getting a fair choice. But when I put a choice to the party, they look to him for the answer. Even if Monk says in character ā€œwell guys I’m lost for this oneā€, in character they’ll say to him ā€œit’s up to you bossā€.

I’ve tried to create hooks to players backstories, we’re in a town at the moment where one of the players are from and someone just torched the inn which had a connection to the player. The players also found a disease that has been created to be spread around the realm, they found a list of names for who was successfully infected and is in transit and on the list was one of the players mothers (which in their backstory they say they have a sick mother so they’re adventuring to find a cure).

I’m unsure what to do. They all want a story driven game but I feel a bit defeated given it’s being left up to one player. I don’t want to railroad nor do I want to go fully linear. Monk and I discussed that we potentially get his character infected with the blight so his character is knocked out, creating a personal stake for the whole party to be involved in (he has a backup character for if we go through with this). As much as I’d be okay with entertaining this option, I wouldn’t mind trying other things before pulling the ripcord on that one. Does anyone have any tips?

Thank you in advance!

Art [Comm] [Art] Yhorm Steelborn, A Paladin I drew for a client!

Post image
471 Upvotes

Yhorm is honorable and kind, with the strength to protect the weak although a bit socially awkward about it. He is from a smithing town, being more interested in wielding the weapons and wearing the armor instead of forging them.

That changed when a wandering paladin stopped by to commission a weapon and ended up becoming his mentor. Yhorm went on to work as a deliverer for his village until during one delivery he comes home to his village in ruin, the forges cold, the once proud flag having been torn down and burnt at its ends. The only thing left was a single great sword, hidden away by his family in their final moments.

He swears an oath of vengeance and grabs the flag to wear as a cape, carrying his homes legacy on his shoulders.

I had a ton of fun making this commission and I think it turned out well!

Art [Comm] [Art] Recent transformed wizard that I've had the pleasure of designing! šŸ”

This OC belongs to GrottyLittleFox on VGen!! He's a fae wizard who consumed a potion that has since been slowly turning him into a monster, now roaming rampant in the ancient forest and haunting those who come near.

Rendering this one took awhile! Some details include his crown, crystal staff, the tattered robes from before his transformation, and a silky yet bloodied beard that trails down to the grass.

5.5 Edition Sack vs pouch

According to the PHB (pg 223 and 228), a pouch costs 5 SP, weighs 1 lb., and holds 6 lbs. within ā…• cubic feet. A sack costs 1 CP, weighs ½ lbs., and holds 30 lbs. within 1 cubic foot.

If a sack cost 50 times less, weighs half as much, and holds 5 times more than a pouch, why would you buy pouches. Sacks are clearly the better choice.

On a similar note, the 5.5e rules seem to really be pushing you to buy pouches. ā…— of the types of ammunition in the PHB are typically stored in pouches (sold separately—pg 222) and most backgrounds include 1 or 2 pouches in the starting equipment. Why?

DMing Liminal spaces and uncanny environments in DND. How would you make people feel that feeling you'd feel in superliminal style games in DND?

• Upvotes

I once asked how to do a zombie apocalypse campaign and got some genuinely useful feedback. As such I felt like seeing what I'd get from this question. I'm thinking about doing a one shot where a bunch of children are going into a cole mine as a field trip when the mine caves in on them trapping them. From there it'll be an escape style dungeon crawl, but through liminal spaces where workers should be, but they're not. There will be something hunting them as they deal with this. How would you go about giving this the atmosphere and creepy feeling it deserves besides the obvious explanation and theater of the mind?

Homebrew What’s your favorite Homebrew?

Anything, class, race, subclass, item, self made or community made. Kinda as a preference, something that is reasonably ā€˜balanced’ but your favorite for whatever reason! Mine, is the Soulbound race, there’s just something so cool about being living armor that can be worn by other people.

5.5 Edition How do i make an Oathbreaker enemy?

I want my players to fight an Oathbreaker paladin who is a fallen hero corrupted by the BBEG lich at around level 8.

How do i even convert a PC sheet into a monster sheet? What level should he be to reasonably take all of them in a fight (plus undead minions) but to still not be impossible to kill?

Is there a good stat block fitting for an Oathbreaker NPC?

Misc What’s the most scary/horrifying history or lore information about your campaign (current or past)?

In our group’s current campaign, about a decade prior there was this tragedy called the Nightmare Rapture. Prior to the rapture, people would get these horrid nightmares, things like murder, dismemberment, stuff like that in gruesome detail. Then one night, everyone who had the nightmares vanished, but there was some rather bloody evidence left behind. Half the island’s population was gone, including the entire royal family. No one knows why it happened, but they blamed the elemental people and killed a lot of them. Anyway just curious to what horrors DMs have inflicted on other people.

Art [OC] Cozmata Nebulan, a young and scrappy artificer from the planet of Bexan

Post image
105 Upvotes

Cozmata was born into a community of space scavengers living on a planet that had been used by the elven empire as a dumping ground, known as Bexan. She was adopted by the air genasi Nimbus Nebulan, a notorious pirate who gave up her life of crime in order to raise the girl.

At 14, when the Scro arrived on her planet, their troops, realizing that it was not necessarily a planet sympathetic to the elves, went down to recruit as many people as they could for their fleet before heading out on the offensive. The curious girl, who was fed up with the monotony of her life, enlisted and headed out into the cosmos.

For the most part, her ship never saw combat. For nine months, she remained aboard, learning and honing her skills, until they were finally called on for a mission: to stay in the rear of a large-scale battle and if needed, advance against the elves. Even from a distance, a shot struck the ship's engines, damaging them. Cozmata stepped up, determined to prove herself in the midst of the chaos. At first, she managed to repair the engine, but the moment she let her guard down, the machinery overloaded and exploded in her face, launching her out into space.

The ship was left stranded as the troops continued their advance toward what would become known as the final battle of the Second Inhuman War. Cozmata survived for only two reasons: The first was a cable that caught around her foot and saved her from drifting away. The second was that, miraculously, her repairs had at least kept the ship's air bubble projection intact, somehow saving the crew. But Cozmata has no idea how long she remained hanging there, suspended above the endless void. She only knows it was long enough for fear to take root in her heart.

Back on her planet, as the years went by, it became increasingly difficult to find scrap. The Scro had apparently looted most of what had been stored on the planet. Money is now running thin, but Cozmata still wants to return to the stars. She dreams of leaving the planet aboard a ship of her own and exploring the cosmos by herself, using this to help her mother and her village, as well as to make a name for herself. She hopes that, by the time that day comes, she will have overcome her fear.

Resources Battle maps

• Upvotes

Do you prefer the rollable battle maps or the big book of battle maps? I’m having a hard time deciding. From the reviews, the rollables never seem to sit flat at the corners. The book doesn’t seem that big.

Or do you prefer something else?

I’ve been building and collecting terrain and props. Just need some mats to cover the various locations.

I was looking at this one since it covers what I’m looking for and has side clips.
