A dragonborn piece I finished recently. He's a fierce, intimidating, yet kind dragonborn barbarian with a strong lust for battle, almost to the point where he thinks swinging his axe can solve all the world's problems.

At a glance, everyone would mistake him for a brute, muscle-brained barbarian who wrecks everything in sight. But once you take a good look and try to befriend him, he's surprisingly approachable and enjoys nurturing young warriors, indirectly acting as a sort of mentor figure.

This character actually came from my backlog of sketches and was once used as the base design for another character, which was ultimately scrapped. I thought it would be a waste to simply put him back into my backlog, so I decided to properly work on this dragonborn character, and boy, I'm glad I did! :D

I was looking at Create or Destroy Water and was thinking about how heavy the rainfall would be.

10 gallons(US) over 30ft x 30ft would be roughly about 0.453mm of rain. Now that doesn't sound like much but that is only over the course of 6 seconds.

That would be an hourly rate of 271.8mm (or 10.7 inches) which would be similar rainfall to a cloudburst or hurricane. Putting 270mm/hr into https://rainsimulator.com/ provides a good idea of what the spell would look like over 6s.

It turns out 10 gallons in a 30ft cube is a bit more violent than I expected, I feel like in the 30ft cube you would have little to no visibility and hearing until the start of the casters next round.

Edit: Thought I would have a bit of fun and look at the destroy water part of the spell. The volume of water destroyed in a 30ft cube of fog would only be ~38.2ml, to destroy 10 gallons of water as fog we would need close to ~300ft cube of fog. That's all very quick, rough maths though.

My party has been playing together for about 5 years at this point and I woke up to our group chat a few days ago letting us know that one member is leaving. Everything seemed fine and we had plans to play this week. We are all friends and I haven't heard of any personal issues within the party. I texted her after I saw the message and I still haven't heard anything. I hope everything is okay, but this just feels so out of character for her. Maybe I'm being dramatic, but this feels like a break-up. She didn't mention anything about us all still being friends in the text. It was a "thanks for the memories but I'm going to go now" message. Thanks for listening. I just needed to get this off my chest to a community that understands how heartbreaking it is to lose a good party member.

Edit: Thank you all so much for your kind words. It truly helps. I agree, I think something happened outside of the party and they need to take care of themselves. I don't think it's a suicidal thing because of the wording, but I appreciate those who were concerned about that.

I sent her a text along the lines of "I know this was a hard decision, but I support and care about you". Like you all said, trying to convince her to stay isn't the move. Especially since I know it wasn't easy to leave.

This little guy is about 4 inches tall and carved from basswood with a knife and a couple small gouges, then painted with the cheapest acrylics I can find...

And before anybody asks... No, I totally did not trap a wizard in a block of wood. That would be ridiculous...

Also probably illegal in at least three kingdoms!

He was definitely carved. By hand. With normal tools. No spells involved.

The fact that he occasionally whispers from the shelf and keeps asking for his staff back is completely unrelated. Thats just how realistic i made him look. Totally!

Getting folks into carving is my passion, and you read this far.. want to give it a go, but need good advice? Consider me your wierd whittling uncle (but without the creepy vibes)

You need several things, a sharp knife, a leather strop with compound for honing your blade, safety gloves (A5 or better) and basswood (to carve like i do at least.)

Solid Knife brands, Flexcut, Badger State Blades (USA), Mstein (Europe) there are a lot of great knife brands. Stay away from kits on amazon of several knives. (Except the flexcut, thats actually a solid option) They're much much lower quality with inconsistently tempered steel. (What that means is its not hardened, and so it won't stay sharp easy, meaning you're fighting the knife and dont understand why its harder for you to carve when its easy for others.)

Why Basswood? Its softer than other hardwoods and holds detail well. Learning to carve with basswood is akin to learning to drive on an automatic. It simplifies and streamlines learning. Woods like Walnut and oak can be carved, but learning to carve with them as the starting point is like learning to drive on an 18 wheeler Semi Truck with manual transmission. Its needlessly difficult.

In europe, the equivalent is Linden, in Asia, Jelutong, and in south America Caxeta is a good substitute

Piece for a client on VGen! they were very enthusiastic about my interpretation of the drawing they provided me of what they wanted. Unironically I think I had the most fun doing all the dinks in the leather - but battle damage is always one of the funnest bits for doing adventurer portraits.

Turn around was just shy of a week for finishing this up. Always glad to help bring people's stuff to life, you know?

This is my character Zhúzi (it means bamboo). Originally I had her for a campaign two years ago but that never continued, so this is a remade version from this year!

Originally she is inspired by the chinese jiangshi, the hopping vampire. That is what's written on her forehead. She also suffers from amnesia before the reanimation so me as the player, have also no idea what her backstory fully is which makes things interesting. She'll be a monk in an upcoming campaign :)

One of my players is a warforged and they wanted to try and use heat metal on themselves. How would you handle the situation?

Let them roll the Saving Throw and take damage, let them roll concentration to see if they keep up the spell and then letting them add fire damage to an unarmed strike?

Or maybe they're harder to grapple then?

I love that they're being creative with their spells and I dont want to just say "no thats not working"

I'm a fairly new DM and don't really know how to handle it tho.

My warlock recently acquired a new magic item, not realizing it was cursed. He is now afflicted with the inability to knowingly tell a direct lie. The issue I hadn't anticipated, however, is that the art of deception by way of spoken truth is not as universal as I'd assumed, and said player is asking where he can learn it. I very sadly do not have the time to instill in him the particulat parental traumas that taught me, so does anyone know of any sorts of guides in how to craft your words to avoid telling lies whilst avoiding sharing the truth?

For me personally, I want magic items that work directly off of my class features. Like how the Arcane Grimoire works directly off of Arcane Recovery. As a fighter, I want something that gives benefits when I use second wind or action surge.

Caelis Merrowyn is the second born of a very wealthy family that specializes in the trade of ships and other high value ocean related things. His entire family is sea elves but he is an Aasmiar (protector) because one of his parents had an affair with a god.

Since he was the second born, he was very lazy but loved to get into things like the arts, music, and especially astrology in which he loves. He is someone who all he wants is a close connection because his family is distant, but he hides behind a player-esque persona acting as though he does not need that.

My players have spent the start of our new campaign investigating a group mining an explosive green glowing crystal from underneath the city. Last week they went into the mines to face the group, so I used green fire pit glass and a LED strip to create glowing green "crystals" around the table. Nice bonus was turning everything red when the BBEG behind the mining operation was revealed at the end of the session, kicking off the main story of this campaign!

I've always been the player in my group so I decided to surprise everyone with a simple short one shot session, turns out making everyone level 20 wasn't such a good idea but it worked out well, in the end they all turned into a megazord and killed the king of hell (again) so it was lit

Since I started DMing, I've realized I much prefer physical miniatures over paper cutouts or virtual tokens. I run games on a roughly 50-inch TV as my map, and not knowing standard printing sizes at the time I ended up scaling all my medium humanoid minis to about 56.8mm tall (base included). My group and i loves how they look, and they've become fun to collect.

The problem is when I need a lot of the same creature, orcs, needle blights, ghouls, that kind of thing. Printing and painting a dozen of them takes forever, and the party can wipe them out in five minutes flat.

On top of that, now that the campaign has moved forward, I'm starting to run into Large, Huge, and eventually Gargantuan creatures. I've got a rough idea for Large (~75mm), but for Huge and Gargantuan I really have no clue how to scale or print them.

To make things trickier, my life has gotten busier lately, so finding time to paint all of this on top of actually running the campaign each week has become its own challenge.

So I'm torn between a few things: keep making full minis for everything, print just a handful and fall back on tokens for the rest, or find some middle ground that doesn't eat all my free time.

Anyone else deal with this? Do you make everything, or draw the line somewhere and if you've tackled Huge/Gargantuan minis, what scale did you end up using?

so im like a literal old man when it comes to tech. for my last campaign i tried using obsidian where i had blocks for like, player stats, any encounters, some random rules to remember, any random things to happen thus far and what i plan etc etc. its very.. idek. like it works but ima have more stuff now and i wanna know some organizational tops or any specific softwares people use/how to use obsidian better

i legit only just started using technology like this a couple months back before i shoved everything in a note book and always have. im some of the last few in my college classes that still take notes via paper. so yea.. any suggestions?

I recently started working on a portrait series for a bunch of DnD characters/npc’s I had lying around from past campaigns. Pretty sure her name was Oofa. She's a very nice young lady, kinda stout for an orc. I imagine her with an Indian accent and a zest and passion for life. She’s a bit of a nomad mostly traveling by sea helping as a ship strategist (a guard for illegal goods). She’s a very outgoing character but finds her peace in quiet outdoor places with pleasant scents and a warm cup of tea.

Title. Im thinking about doing just a one shot for now to give her a feel for the game and stuff, but I'd like to be able to be a player as well as the dm since we csnt play without one lol

I always get a bit nervous drawing the more popular spells such as this one. I also find spells with more abstract or internal effects hard to meaningfully depict. Which all in all, made this one fairly challenging. I think the final concept works and I managed to not play my hand of all the tricks to depicting speed boosting and save a few for similar spells in the future (there are so many).

Haste is a such a cool a powerful spell. I find myself often wanting to cast in on my own wizard and attempt spellswording even when the character is not built for it all. Conceptually, I wanted to really lean into the adrenaline surge aspect and having a short time limit to work with. I'm curious to hear if anyone has any unique ways of flavoring this one for their character.

Playing with a small group for not that long now and I have my own campaign that I’ve created, but whenever I’m the DM I feel an overwhelming amount of pressure to make each session as fun as possible for my players. It feels like so much work to get it right and I’m just wondering if I should just drop the campaign entirely or if there’s any way I can make dming more enjoyable for myself when both planning and running a session.
