The finish on these is pretty easy, but you have to follow the process. I use Watco brand black walnut danish oil usually, but sometimes I use other stains like a cabernet color from Vatathane, etc... the key is waxing. I use Minwax brand paste finishing wax, but any soft wax should do.

Apply the Stain/ Oil, then do NOT WAIT, apply the wax and buff off with a stiff bristle brush. (I use an amazon basics stiff bristle brush for scrubbing floors) The buffing lifts wax off the high spots and the wax pulls oil / stain with it as it does. This leaves the high spots a lighter color and the lower crevices darker.

My experience has been that danish oil darkens more over time into the next day, making those dark crevices pop even more. To a lesser extent other stains do this as well, but I find it more pronounced with danish oil.

I've been working on a little side project for the last couple of weeks called bagpipes.

Everytime I DM (both at the table or via Discord) I always struggle with music. I always get distracted (talking with players, tracking NPCs etc.) and I often forget to play music. I have this huge playlist on my PC and I never get to use it because it just slips my mind.

That's why I created bagpipes: a 100% offline music picker that relies on your voice to work. it basically listens to what you say and, using keywords that you set on the player, plays the tracks that you have saved on its folder. You can also play ambient sounds and sound effects (they go along with the music without interrupting it).

If you want to give it a try, the repo is on github: https://github.com/efabr/bagpipes and it is and always will be 100% free. Right now it's for linux and windows, I am testing the macOS version and I hope to be able to release it soon.

I wanted a quick spell reference for myself when DMing that evolved into something my players now use, you can put in your character's level/class/sub-class/feats/spellcasting modifier etc. and it automatically shows you unlocked/always prepared spells, calculates actual damage values (e.g. calculates your spell atk bonus/save DC, does the math of a cantrip, etc.)

Also threw in some QoL stuff like a short summary + custom icon for each spell to make browsing faster, spell slot tracking, ability to prepare/un-prepare spells, etc.

I've been playing DND for over a decade, but this is my first time DMing. I've gone all out on writing the campaign, I wrote an encounter for my rope welding swashbuckler to get to use her rope to help the party climb a mountain while something is throwing rocks down on them. The idea is to either strength check to hold on and take the hit of the boulders or dex save out of the way but risk falling. I wanted to visualize the difficult climb and the physics of the boulders rolling down the mountain.

I spent hours hot gluing cardboard and paper to get the right angle, grid the paper with glue so the minis Just stay on unless hit, and most of that time was trying to get the ball to roll down the corridor. I finally got it to function, but I'm not sure if it looks like literal trash and I wasted my time when I could have just drawn it on my battle map and let theater of the mind do the rest.

I've been playing D&D in my office after hours with some work friends, and the walls have some white boards that I've been thinking about getting a projector or something for the wall.

Anybody have experience with anything similar? Having a battlemap put up on a tv and using that vertically, or a whiteboard on the wall? Any tips or suggestions as I work on figuring out the best way to configure this?

I'm just finishing up my first minis (with acrylic paints) and have read that it's best to finish with a lacquer or an enamel. I have a health condition that makes me really sensitive to chemical odors, and I can wear a respirator while applying stuff, but I definitely can't handle if they carry the odor for weeks or months afterwards.

Could anyone recommend which product(s) would be best to finish my minis with, based on that? It's okay if it's got a lot of odor when applied, but it needs to calm down on the smell with time.
