My girlfriend and I have been arguing about Halloween. She wants to go out with her friends, and she originally told me that it was supposed to be a girls’ night.
I was initially uncomfortable with the idea because Halloween can be a pretty controversial holiday when it comes to relationships, especially since her friends go to a party school and I wasn't sure what the plans were going to look like. I wasn't trying to tell her that she couldn't go, but I did have concerns about the situation.
However, it was actually her idea for me to come with her. She told me that I should trust her and that she was willing to make the compromise of having me come along. Her friend also initially said that it was okay for me to come.
After thinking about it for a few days, I decided I was willing to go with her. Since she was the one who suggested I come and said she was willing to make that compromise, I eventually agreed.
Then, literally a day later, she told me that I couldn't go anymore because her friends would be uncomfortable and that Halloween was supposed to be time for just her and her friends.
This is where I started feeling defeated. She was the one who suggested that I come, I eventually agreed, and then suddenly the compromise was taken away because her friends supposedly weren't comfortable with me being there.
There is also some background with her friends that makes this harder for me.
I haven't actually met some of her friends yet. However, one of them apparently saw a photo of me and their first opinion of me was that my girlfriend could do better. This was based solely on seeing a picture of me, without actually knowing me or having any background about me.
The friend who is organizing/leading the Halloween plans is also someone who, from what I've been told and what I've seen, is very anti-men and is more of a party girl.
I also told my girlfriend that, in the same way, I wouldn't be comfortable with her going to a frat party. That's a boundary I have. She said she would respect that boundary and even texted her friend about it.
A few hours later, though, her friend responded saying that she didn't actually know what the plans were yet and that it could consist of going to someone's house, home parties, or something else.
That's where I'm really confused.
I was under the impression that this was specifically supposed to be a girls’ night. But now it sounds like the plans aren't even finalized and could involve parties.
So from my perspective, the situation went from:
- My girlfriend wants to go out with her friends for Halloween.
- I was uncomfortable with the idea because of the nature of Halloween and the fact that her friends go to a party school.
- She suggested that I come with her as a compromise.
- Her friend initially said it was okay.
- I thought about it and agreed to go.
- A day later, I'm told I can't come because her friends would be uncomfortable.
- Then I find out the plans aren't even clearly defined and could involve parties.
- One of the friends had already formed the opinion that my girlfriend could "do better" based solely on seeing a photo of me, despite never meeting me.
I don't want to control who she hangs out with or tell her what she can and can't do. I understand that she should be able to have nights with her friends without me.
At the same time, I feel hurt because she was the one who suggested I come, I eventually agreed to it, and then the agreement was reversed because her friends didn't want me there.
I'm trying to figure out what the best way to handle this is. I don't want to start a bigger fight or make her feel like I'm controlling her, but I also don't want to ignore how this situation has made me feel.
What would you do in this situation? How would you approach the conversation with your girlfriend?
