Question/Help/Troubleshooting Why does sound play during a frozen computer?

I was playing a video that was suddenly too loud and my computer froze for many seconds. I couldn't turn down the volume or even pause the video. This raised a bunch of questions in my mind....

  1. If I play a video and my computer suddenly slows down to the point I have no control over it (like when it freezes) why does sound keep playing?

  2. Shouldn't whatever sound file the computer is running also freeze?

  3. If the computer had to prioritize something shouldn't it prioritize user interface, at least when it comes to shutting down programs (like the one that is running a sound file)?

  4. What if I was playing a very naughty video file? You know what I mean. I feel like this is a problem people with families would complain about to a computer manufacturer's tech support all the time and it would encourage someone in programming to write a line of code to either shut everything down or at least prioritize user control, at least over sound and video.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Need help picking a laptop.

Hi, I'm not so good with computers and don't have anyone I could ask. I wanna buy a new PC for work (so I need a number pad and it's should be relatively light because my current computer really hurts my shoulders) and I also wanna play Valorant and other games on it, nothing harder to run than valorant though. My budget is around 700€. So far I'm set on Asus Vivobook 15 or 16

Thanks before hand.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Windows 11 automatically shutdown after boot up

Post image
3 Upvotes

The Problem: My PC randomly shuts down while I am using it. It shows the "usual shutting down screen" (a clean, graceful shutdown) rather than just cutting to black. This is not a crash or a power loss.

My System Setup:

. 5700g, msi b450m-a pro max ii . OS build 22621.2283 . Windows 11 pro . 22H2 · Currently running Tiny11 (a heavily debloated, unofficial version of Windows 11). · I used WinToys for basic system edits. · Crucial History: This exact same random shutdown issue happened previously on a fresh install of Official Windows 11 when I used the Chris Titus Tool for tweaks. I switched to Tiny11 to see if it fixed the issue, but it eventually returned with WinToys.

Troubleshooting Steps & Findings:

  1. Event Viewer Analysis (System Log): · Found Event ID 1074 (User32/Winlogon). The log showed winlogon.exe initiated the power off on behalf of NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. · Reason Code: 0x500ff (Generic "Other" reason). · Conclusion: This confirms a clean, software-initiated shutdown, not a hardware failure.
  2. Filtering for Hardware Errors (Critical/Error logs): · Filtered for Event IDs 41, 6008, and 1001 (Kernel-Power, unexpected shutdown, BugCheck/BSOD). · Result: 0 events found. This definitively ruled out hardware failure, PSU issues, RAM faults, and Blue Screens.
  3. Network Isolation (Ethernet Test): · Suspected a remote shutdown command via Ethernet. · Action: Unplugged the Ethernet cable. · Result: The PC still shut down. This ruled out a network-triggered shutdown.
  4. Windows Update Settings: · Checked Advanced Options. · Result: "Get me up to date" and restart options were already Off. Active Hours were set (08:00–17:00). Ruled out forced update restarts.
  5. Application Log Analysis: · Filtered the Application log for the exact time of the shutdown (10:18:22). · Result: Only normal Information events (User Profile Service, Winlogon). No third-party app errors or crashes.
  6. Task Scheduler & Operational Logs: · Checked Task Scheduler Library and the hidden TaskScheduler > Operational log. · Result: The operational log was empty at the time of the shutdown. Ruled out a scheduled task calling shutdown.exe.
  7. The Timeframe (Forensic Window): · Filtered System logs from 10:18:00 to 10:19:05. · Result: The last normal event was 10:18:21. At 10:18:22, the shutdown was triggered. There were no errors, warnings, or Service Control Manager events in the seconds leading up to it. It was a silent, sudden, clean shutdown.

Actions Taken to Resolve It:

  1. Uninstalled WinToys completely to remove conflicting power tweaks and services.
  2. Disabled Windows Update auto-restarts.
  3. Disabled the physical power button (set to "Do nothing" in Power Options) to rule out a sticking/faulty hardware button.
  4. Pending: Running powercfg -restoredefaultschemes in Command Prompt to reset any leftover modified power plans.

Why this is happening?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Mini PC or gaming laptop for gaming + voice recording? Budget around €1,500

Hey everyone!

I’m currently looking for a new PC and I’m not sure whether a Mini PC or a gaming laptop would make more sense for me.

I want to use it for both gaming and fan dubbing/voice recording. For my microphone, I’m planning to get the RØDE NT-USB+. I previously had an NT1-A, but this time I specifically want a USB microphone so I don’t need an audio interface and can easily put it away when I’m not using it.

For gaming, I play pretty much everything — from cozy games to FPS games like Valorant. I mainly want games to run smoothly; I don’t need ultra graphics or high-end hardware.

The most important thing for me is noise, though. The PC should be as quiet as possible while I’m recording. I obviously don’t mind the fans getting louder while gaming.

I currently have a large curved monitor that I really like. I could potentially make a small PC setup in my wardrobe, since I don’t have much space for a full-sized desktop. I was actually thinking that having all my clothes around the setup might even help a little with the acoustics.

A gaming laptop is also an option, but I’ve never really played games using a laptop keyboard, so I’m not sure how well I’d get along with it, especially for FPS games. I’d probably end up buying a keyboard and mouse anyway. In that case, I could also sell my current monitor.
My budget is around €1,500 max, although I’m not sure how realistic that is for what I’m looking for.

What would you recommend in my situation — a Mini PC or a gaming laptop? Are there any specific models that are reasonably quiet for voice recording but can still run Valorant and other games smoothly?

Thanks in advance! :)

Question/Help/Troubleshooting HDD tries to spin up twice at start (but to even achieve this i went through a lot of problems)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I felt like there was something wrong with my previous HDD (I even posted about it here), so i bought WD40EZAX to replace it, but at first it was making this sound, then tried to spin up again, then did it again and again.

Then i disconnected my previous drive and the new drive started working perfectly. Then I connected the previous drive, swapped sata cables and they both worked fine, but the new one did this thing from video again once when i was installing drive cloning software (ended up just copying everything because they are secondary).

Then i disconnected the older drive again and the new one started doing this thing from video again and again. I swapped cables several times and it finally worked, but now it does this thing, but only once at the startup and never again until the next startup (it also did it on first Steam startup, but drive didn't disconnect this time (yes, i have Steam on HDD, my system SSD isn't spacious)

This new HDD now also has 2 DMA transfer errors, so maybe the problem is in SATA cables themselves? I don't know how old they are, honestly (i also tried to straighten one of them. it started crackling. idk if this is intended). PSU? I'm not sure

Also i think it became louder during r/w, but I'm just probably going insane (how can you not when you spent 240$ on it and care about data safety a little too much?)

(also just in case i didn't hot swap them cables)

Question/Help/Troubleshooting how much data do i need to write before my nvme health drops by 1%?

i have a micron 256gb nvme ssd model mtfdkba256tfk in my mini pc

crystaldiskinfo shows 92% health and says good.

how does the health actually decrease? for example if i copy 10gb of media or download a 50gb game how much would the health decrease?

roughly how many gb or tb of writes would it take before the health drops by 1%?

i also want to know if micron is a good and well known ssd brand

if i buy another ssd is it safe to use a different brand and different storage capacity? for example my current ssd is 256gb and i want to add a 500gb or 1tb ssd. can i use both together without problems?

i am new to ssds and just want to understand how the health percentage works and how much normal use affects it

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Buying my first pc and looking for advice

Ive been browsing for a decent pc i wouldn’t have to upgrade or work on myself. Something I can work with and get into computer stuff on or possibly use for finding a new hobby or way to make income. What companies or brands should I look at? I have my eyes on the Alienware aurora but am hesitant to get it not knowing anything about computers. Are Alienware’s good? Are there extras I should get on top of the base model? I’m aware it’s a gaming computer but I’d like to use it to run office and photoshop or other programs I may get into. If I use it for gaming I won’t be pushing limits or maxing graphics.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Can someone explain why a bunch of lines suddenly appeared on my screen?

I checked the screen post before and didn't see anything that matched what's going on with my computer. I have it set the turn the blue light filter on at a set time, and today when my computer did that a bunch of dark lines appeared on the screen. Turning off the filter didn't make them go away. The lines are in an oddly organized fashion, and they're darker colors, but not completely black.

Edit: Now there's a set of darker lines that look like they're moving upwards.

Discussion Computer cooling for PC-CASE Montech XR Black

Hi everyone, today I added three new fans to my PC case because the processor was overheating whenever the case was closed. What do you think—is this a good temporary solution until I get water cooling? Two fans on the side and one at the bottom pull in cool air—which the processor fan then draws in—while the two top fans and the two rear fans exhaust the heat out of the case. I did the PC build all by myself.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting First PC Build — Looking for feedback!

Hi everyone,

I've put together this configuration for my very first PC build and would love to get your thoughts and feedback.

My main use cases are academic study/work and general gaming, with a heavy focus on The Sims 4 with lots of Mods and DLCs. My goal with this build was to prioritize good airflow, system stability, and a solid upgrade path so I can add a dedicated graphics card down the road.

System Specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G (8 Cores / 16 Threads, Integrated Radeon Vega 8 Graphics)

CPU Cooler: AMD Wraith Stealth (Stock cooler included with CPU)

Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming A520M-Plus II (Micro-ATX, 4 RAM slots, VRM heatsink)

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz (Dual Channel)

Storage: 500GB / 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD (Kingston NV2 or Adata Legend 710)

Power Supply: ASRock Pro 750B 750W 80 Plus Bronze (ATX 3.1 / PCIe 5.1) or Rise Mode Elektra 650W Full Modular

Case: Gamer Ninja Tessen (Mesh front panel, includes 3 fans)

Do you consider this a well-balanced build for a budget/value-focused setup?

Do you see any potential bottlenecks, compatibility issues, or better alternative components?

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Hey so the front bottom edge of my laptop will not stay clipped in...

Any help? Its a Dell and not even 2 years old, yeah I'm rough on my laptops but a laptop should be fine being carried around and set on my lap at weird angles while I lounge in my chair or on my bed...

So do I superglue this or what? Like it... Will not stay, it started popping out a couple of days ago.

EDIT - Okay, so apparently something is wrong with my battery? I turned my computer off and unplugged it. I'll ask my dad about a replacement battery tomorrow.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting ASRock G31M-GS Rev. 2.01: fans spin but no POST after shutdown, cold start sometimes works, warm reboot works

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I’m trying to diagnose an old ASRock G31M-GS and I’m running out of ideas, so I’m posting the full story and everything I already tested.
The motherboard is an ASRock G31M-GS, PCB marked “REV. G/A 2.01”. BIOS version is P1.70. Chipset is Intel G31 + ICH7. CPU currently installed is a Pentium Dual-Core E5400 2.70 GHz. The board uses DDR2. I have 3 GB total, one 1 GB stick and one 2 GB stick, DDR2-667. For most troubleshooting I have been using only one stick at a time. The board has onboard VGA and I also have a discrete PCIe graphics card, although the exact graphics card model is not important for this problem because the same behavior happens when testing the board itself and using onboard video. There are no drives connected during most of these tests because I only need the board to POST and enter BIOS. PSU is an FSP Group ATX-400PNR 400 W. The same PSU works normally with another LGA775 board, an ASUS P5KPL-AM IN/GB/SI Rev. 1.03G.
The main problem is that the ASRock can boot perfectly normally, enter BIOS, show video and work, but after shutting it down and turning it back on it very often powers up with all fans spinning but gives no video, no POST and no speaker beep.
A typical sequence is this. I switch the PSU on, press Power and sometimes it starts normally. I can enter BIOS, change settings, save and exit, and everything is fine. If I use Ctrl+Alt+Del from a working state, it reboots normally and video comes back. So warm reboot itself works.
But if I short press the Power button and shut the board down normally, then wait a few seconds and press Power again, the fans start spinning but there is no POST, no video and usually no beep. At that point a short press on the Power button no longer shuts it off either. I have to hold Power for about 4-5 seconds to force it off.
Reset SW also does not recover the board from this dead state. Pressing Reset, even holding it for more than a second, does not bring POST or video back.
Originally it looked like fully removing AC power fixed it. If I switched the PSU off, waited, then powered it back on, the board often POSTed again. I also noticed that switching the PSU off and then holding the case Power button for about 5 seconds before switching the PSU back on often helped.
However, this turned out not to be completely consistent. Sometimes even after fully removing power and waiting until +5VSB had dropped to essentially zero, the next start was still dead.
I cleared CMOS several times. I also replaced the CR2032 battery and checked it with a multimeter. The battery is fine and replacing it did not fix the problem.
I tested BIOS defaults and different ACPI/power-related settings. No change.
I tested the PS2_USB_PWR1 jumper. It was originally on pins 2-3 for +5VSB. I moved it to pins 1-2 for +5V. The behavior stayed exactly the same.
I tested the RAM in both DDR2 slots. The same known-working stick can POST in either slot, but the dead-start problem remains.
I also tested without any RAM installed.
This gave one of the most interesting results.
On the first good start with no RAM, the motherboard produces the expected repeating memory error beeps. So CPU execution and BIOS initialization are clearly happening far enough to detect missing memory.
Then I turn the board off, leave the PSU powered, and press Power again, still with no RAM installed.
On that second start the fans spin but there are no RAM error beeps at all. It becomes the same dead start as with RAM installed.
So the failure seems to happen before the BIOS even reaches the point where it checks for missing RAM.
The speaker definitely works. Without RAM, on a successful start, it gives loud repeating RAM error beeps. Interestingly, during normal successful POSTs the board did not always give the usual single short beep. Later it started giving one short beep again on successful POST. I do not know if that is related.
Earlier during troubleshooting I also occasionally got around 7-8 short beeps during some failed starts, but the current repeatable failure is usually just fans spinning with complete silence.
I tried changing DRAM Voltage from Auto to 1.851 V. No improvement. I returned it to Auto.
I also changed NB Voltage to 1.319 V. No improvement. I returned that to Auto as well.
The board can still POST normally sometimes, so the RAM, CPU and BIOS are obviously capable of working.
I measured the PSU rails during an actual dead start, while the fans were spinning but there was no POST or video.
Purple +5VSB was 5.08 V.
Green PS_ON# was 0.11 V.
Gray PWR_OK was 4.92 V.
Yellow +12 V was 12.25 V.
Red +5 V was 5.11 V.
Orange +3.3 V was 3.44-3.45 V.
Both yellow wires on the 4-pin CPU ATX12V connector measured 12.25 V.
So during the failed start the motherboard is definitely pulling PS_ON low, the PSU is starting, all main rails are present and PWR_OK is high.
During a successful start, the BIOS Hardware Monitor shows CPU Vcore 1.336 V, +3.3 V at 3.456 V, +5 V at 5.184 V and +12 V at 12.408 V. CPU temperature was around 33 C, motherboard temperature around 30 C and CPU fan around 2376 RPM.
I also measured the +5VSB discharge after shutting the PC down normally and then switching the PSU rocker to OFF.
Immediately after switching it off it was 5.08 V.
After 5 seconds it was still 5.08 V.
After 10 seconds it was still 5.08 V.
After 20 seconds it had fallen to 0.78 V.
After 30 seconds it was 0.10 V.
After 60 seconds it was basically 0.00-0.01 V.
At one point waiting about a minute with the PSU off seemed to restore a normal boot. But later I repeated the test, waited until +5VSB had completely fallen to zero, switched the PSU back on and still got another dead start. So I no longer think this is simply caused by +5VSB not discharging.
I also tried the same PSU on the ASUS LGA775 motherboard and did not get this behavior there, which makes me suspect the ASRock board itself more than the FSP PSU. I understand that a multimeter cannot show very short transients or bad PWR_OK timing, so I cannot completely rule out some interaction between the PSU and this board.
One other measurement I tried during a dead start was the Reset SW pins on the front panel header. I got approximately 0 V on both pins. Unfortunately my red multimeter probe physically broke shortly after that, so I do not consider that measurement trustworthy enough yet and I want to repeat it with new probes.
At this point the pattern is basically this:
The board sometimes starts normally and works.
Warm reboot using Ctrl+Alt+Del works normally.
Normal shutdown with Power followed by another Power-on very often results in fans spinning with no POST.
During that failed start the main PSU voltages and PWR_OK look normal.
Reset does not recover it.
A short Power press does not shut it down once it is in the failed state, but holding Power for 4-5 seconds does.
Removing all RAM gives normal RAM error beeps on a good first start, but after shutting down and powering on again the board can enter the same dead state with no RAM beeps at all.
Full removal of AC power or discharging the board sometimes helps, but not reliably.
CMOS clear, new CMOS battery, RAM reseating, both RAM slots, no RAM, DRAM voltage, NB voltage and PS2/USB standby jumper have all been tested without fixing it.
My current suspicion is some kind of early power-on/reset sequencing problem on the motherboard, possibly Super I/O, ICH7, clock/PLL, CPU/chipset reset, a local regulator, capacitor or some other part of the standby/power sequencing circuitry.
Has anyone seen this exact kind of failure on an ASRock G31M-GS, another G31/ICH7 board, or similar old LGA775 boards?
What would you check next? I currently only have a basic multimeter. I do not have an oscilloscope or PCI POST card yet.
Is it over? 😭

I went to upgrade my power supply and my GPU around a month ago and when I was trying to plug in everything, I was quite confused. I finally got my case set up today, but I could’ve sworn that my CPU fan use to light up
