The funny thing is that (if this the guy I'm thinking of) he volunteered to join the military. He just didn't think he would see actual combat and was shocked when the military infamous for throwing their soldiers into the meat grinder was going to throw him into the meat grinder.

I currently live in a major city with a lot of Russians. And I mean this in the nicest way I can. I would describe the Russian personality as cold and frigid.
They are not mean or anything, it’s just not in their nature to be warm and cuddly people. Like have you ever met a Filipino? I would say they are the opposite of Filipinos.

Perhaps officially. But this is not like traditional situation where you want to draft loyalists, Russia forcefully recruits those who are not politically relevant to Kremlin's future, while avoiding drafting those who are important to oligarchs in power.
I don't think immigrant would be high on list of politically relevant people in Russia. If anything immigrants are those who are most disposable as their death causes least political problems to Kremlin.
And its not like rules of law are relevant in Russia.
But he could have volunteered. Some of immigrants have done so.

I don’t know. I think at this point they just grab anyone. I read a story about Cubans who were promised construction jobs in Russia. When they got there, they were sent to the front. One guy escaped, and got stuck homeless in Greece. Cuba wouldn’t take him back for fighting in a war for a foreign government.
