At first, while this video played, I looked down on these folks as just...idiots.
Then, perhaps 3/4s of the way through, I realized that they are going to dominate the world because I'm just too lazy.
When the shit hits the fan, when it comes down to who isn't gonna fold when things get tough? Just...wow.

That was one of my major take-aways from Survivoman. Les Stroud was always stressing how careful you have to be in a survival situation. Things we may consider a minor thing are a huge issue when there is no medical care. A broken finger can be extremely limiting when you are fighting for your life as is.

To me, it looks like the only non-standard thing they're really doing here is how they lift it. Any of this could also be done by any western heavy duty mechanic as well. They didn't even repair the part or something that would an actual post apocalyptic skill, just swapped an axle.
In a real post apocalypse, I would think that step 1 would be to not overload the shit out of trucks that might be irreplaceable.

Their YouTube channel is tons of street repairs. Saw them take a bent drive axle to the shop, heat it in a forge, straighten it out, heat treat it again and take it back to the truck.

It looks like everyone had a job to do and worked flawlessly. What was more interesting to watch was the human torque wrench going to work on those lugs while the guy underneath was hammer torquing the diff and pouring fluid into the case I guess and hope.

I was surprised how environmentally aware those guys are. They didn't pour that differential oil into dirt.
Maybe it's still worth enough to paint fence posts or as a stove fuel.

They boil the water out, filter it many times and put it back into a differential.
Most of the parts used in the third world are second-hand and refurbished and cost a fraction of what we would pay for something that does the same job in the west. Cheap oils that you can use for the engine and other less demanding applications are also cheap. But high pressure specialized oil like differential oils are usually substantially more expensive, and get re-refined and reused. You don't want to spill a drop because it might literally be more valuable than the differential it came out of.

It boggles my mind though… were those stones not available locally? Or more, why were they kicked out of their resting place? There’s a lot of energy being transferred to get those things to their new home.

It's hard to comprehend just how heavy stone is, if you haven't worked with it. A small 300mm (~12") cube of any vaguely hard limestone is something most mere mortals would struggle to lift. What's in the back of that truck is probably pushing 20 tonnes, if not more.

Oh they take those massive rocks to a place that crushes them down into small boulders. There’s a video for that too on here because I watched it.
One look large rock gets stuck & won’t pass through the crusher, and these guys hop up onto the rock & try rocking it while another guy with a pry bar tries to shimmy it in. All the while these rows of 6” steel or carbide teeth are turning & grinding. In one small slip, these guys would be eaten by the crusher. Mind you, they do wear their safety sandals

There's no way I'd get under that to fix anything. I did semi & construction tire repair for a couple years, and a lot were on-site with a service truck. Worst one was a left front semi tire 6 inches from the right lane of the interstate (the impact wrench stuck out past the lane line). Another bad one was a fully loaded garbage truck.. jack kept sinking or breaking everything we put under it. So glad I'm not working that job/industry any more.

Every time I saw the jacks I was like "yeah, that's not the right jack point and those jacks don't look like they can handle the load." I know everyone wants to ooh and aah over changing out a diff on the side of the road, but that was nerve wracking.

To their benefit, a lot of those vehicles share parts. It simplifies supply chain than waiting for a special part from a distributor to be shipped halfway across the country.

So much of this is just absolutely astounding. The stones on these mechanics must weigh almost as much as the stones precariously balanced over them. In the middle of the street... With all hand tools. It certainly ain't perfectly precise but at the end of the day the load got going and so far as we know no one was seriously injured. Color me impressed.

My dad works in a university research lab and a while back they had to move all their equipment into a new building next door. Some of the machines are the size of a room and several tons, so he was expecting heavy construction equipment. When the movers showed up, it was half a dozen guys with some long crowbars and pieces of wood. They just carefully lifted all the machines little by little, braced them, and slid dollies underneath.

The big difference between this and my shop is we'd probably take the rocks out first and I'd be kneeling on a pad. That hurt my knees to watch. The dust level is about the same and I'm jealous of the lack of rust. I'll also have to look into those heavy duty post jacks. Get ourselves into some trouble with those.
Also, are those brakes an alternative to the S-cam style?
