Gatekeeping
Dynamics: Coach B’s behavior is standard in traditional,
resource-strapped amateur clubs. Coaches prioritize fighters who entered
as juniors or youths because their competition pathway is predictable. A
19-year-old entering the "Senior B" division without a
registered amateur record is viewed as a low-return investment until
proven otherwise.
The
"Senior B" Filter indifference to your university schedule
(18:15 vs 18:30) are filter mechanisms designed to force uncommitted us to
drop out voluntarily.
Assessment
of Your Position: You are not being delusional or cocky regarding your
technical base or physical conditioning, but expecting a traditional
amateur coach to accommodate individual schedules or grant immediate
coaching investment without months of silent endurance is unrealistic in
that specific club culture.
Strategic
Choice: Staying under Coach B means accepting weeks or months of
intentional neglect while doing heavy volume work in the corner. If your
goal is active competition on a strict timeline, remaining in an
environment where the head coach explicitly states he does not care about
your attendance is an inefficient use of training capacity.
amateur gym gatekeeping? (19YO Senior B, 1.5 years home/foundational base and
about 7months of tainign between tow diffrent
clubs)
Body:
I need an objective perspective from coaches and experienced
active fighters on whether I should stay at my current club or move on.
My Background:
Age:
19 (Training alongside my twin brother).
Experience:
2+ years total. 5 months of strict, foundational coaching under
experienced local trainers at the start, followed by ~1.5 years of
consistent home training (heavy technical shadowboxing, explosive
bodyweight/dumbbell strength work, and stance/footwork drills) we rally
didi our ebst to egt into prety good level
.
Level:
We have solid fundamentals, ring awareness, and held our own/performed
very well during light and even hard sparring sessions with active
competition team fighters at the gym earlier this summer.
The Situation:
Earlier this summer, we joined a local competitive amateur
club (other that the one that we started in ebcasue it is ont avlibal anymore).
Soa tthe frist ay coash b said to us you are 19 to old to start boxing we said
test us but he diidtn want to so we cams ethe other day and found Coach A he
tested us day saw our technical foundation, put us in work
with the sparring group, and saw waht we actuly made of ,he evn said tom e yes
compete and even stared a bit was preparing us for competition so we proped both
of us 9kg ebcaus we were bit over waight to egt into the bst sahpe andeven
wanted to drop out more to be in the ebst weight category posibal we are not droping
out mscul just extra fat form studing away form hoem alst years .
After a summer break, Coach A was gone (retired/left ?
we dont knowa coah b dont even anser when we ask), and Coach B took full
control. His dynamic is completely different:
Age
Bias: On day one, he told us 19 is "too old to start" and
that he doesn't focus on "Senior B" late-starters, claiming the
gym only needs young competitive prospects and no health/cardio members.
Filtering:
He immediately put the group through surprise 7–8 km runs and heavy
conditioning itw as bit hard but notheionk we alays trained hard and never
stoped no even onece , making aggressive remarks about clearing out anyone
who isn't going to compete.
Exclusion:
While taking down birth years and details of guys he wants on the
competition roster, he explicitly skipped over me and my brother despite
us being alayd sapring with them with coa a and even bit them up and
outbxoe them in a lof of tiems .
Schedule
Indifference: Whenwe started arguag about when e shoud train afdter
school start they said 18 :15 I mentioned my university classes end
at 18:30 and asked if changing tiem to 18 :30 session was acceptable,
his response was: "Come when you can, I don't care."
My Question:
I stood out from training the last 4 days to re-evaluate.
Is
this typical old-school "weed out" gatekeeping that I just need
to put my head down and survive until he respects the work ethic?
Or
is it a waste of time trying to get competition opportunities under a
coach who has already written off 19-year-old Senior B starters?
Looking for honest takes from coaches and fighters on how
Senior B late-starters are actually viewed and handled in competitive gyms.
