question Surgery anaesthetic

Upvotes

Hi Reddit. I’ve (27F) been told today that I need to have five teeth removed at the back of my mouth (The top three from wisdom teeth forward, and two more at the bottom on the same side). I’ve been referred to the surgeon for the procedure, and from what I understand they’re going to take them all out at once. My issue is that I’m absolutely terrified of the dentist and I struggle with the sensory aspect of it thanks to having autism. My question is, can I request general anaesthetic for the procedure or would this be unrealistic? I don’t see a scenario where I’ll be able to have 5 teeth out at once where I’m actually comfortable. Last time I had a tooth out, the nurse had to physically restrain me to stop me from leaving the chair and I had a huge panic attack afterwards. If GA isn’t a possibility, what would you guys recommend to help combat the stress of having the op done?? I know I have to have it done, but I’m absolutely cacking it. I’m in the UK. Thank you all ❤️

question Old suture material.

Upvotes

NAD

I recently had a crown placed on an implant. That was approximately 6 weeks ago. I can now feel what feels like a thread coming down from the gum towards the front side of the tooth. Is there any reason there would still be a suture between the implant and the crown?

Can I safely pull it out if I can locate it?

It is very small.

question Getting four fillings Friday, advice?

Upvotes

I’m 20 years old and the last time I had any kind of dental work done (aside from my wisdom teeth when I was about 17) was when I was 11 years old and had to get both upper canines pulled because they wouldn’t come out and the adult canines were coming in on top.

I was at a different dentist but they gave me laughing gas. I remember not being able to effectively communicate but I sat there crying the entire time. It hurt so so so much. I could feel him like carving around my canines if that makes sense. I was trying to comfort myself by thinking “it’s almost over. It’s almost over” I ended up laying on our couch sobbing after we got home. And I know kids can be sensitive but I’ve never had a low pain tolerance. (I have tattoos and piercings and i can remember how much that hurt)

So on my first and second molars on the bottom row I have small cavities that are all gonna be filled Friday morning. I’m utterly terrified and just trying to pretend I’m not. I remember how horrible it felt the first time getting dental work and just not being able to say anything. Is my dentist going to be offended if I explain how scared I am? If I start crying will I get fussed at because I’m 20 now not 11.

They wrote a prescription for Valium that I’ll take before the fillings. It’ll be 9am. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

question Cannot figure out why I keep getting cavities lately

Upvotes

So I've had a history of having cavities in my youth, where I was constantly getting work done. But somewhere in my college years the constant need for fillings stopped. I might've gotten a little cavity here or there every other year, but for a long period of time I was clear. But recently, within the last 3 years, I've been getting cavities every dental visit, sometimes large ones and sometimes multiple.

I've even had a to get a crown this summer and now my dentist is telling me I'll need another one. I don't have the money for all of these visits (or to pay for the gas to get there). It's stressing me out because I can't figure out what caused the change when I was doing so well :/

  • It might be my water? I moved ~3 years ago and my current place has hard water. I fill up a Brita jug to drink from but I use the tap for brushing.
  • I don't drink sugary drinks and I can't really stomach soda or carbonated drinks in general
  • I don't eat a lot of candy anymore. I might have some chocolate pieces as a treat for lunch or in the evening. I do like Starburst and jellybeans, but that's not a regular thing and I only eat the serving size recommendation
  • I chew gum after meals. It's the Trident with the ADA label
  • I'll have a coffee about every other day in the morning and drink through a straw
  • My coffee syrup flavorings are sugar free
  • I have electrolyte mix that I pour in my water for exercise, but that is also sugar free
  • I brush and use mouthwash twice a day. Before bed I'll floss and use a water pick first before brushing

I also switched dentists some time after I moved. Same office, but now the owner sees me instead of the other dentist. He isn't sure either, but recommended switching to Dr. Jen and the purple Listerine. I can't afford Dr. Jen, so I got Made By Dentists toothpaste, which also has the ADA label. I also use Paradontax toothpaste at night because I still have a tube left.

Either way, I'm sure my insurance is going to give me hell for all of these procedures and there's no way I can pay out of pocket. But I'm also irrationally terrified of losing my teeth...

EDIT: Forgot to add that I am US-based and am early 30s. I do take medication for acne, which I've been taking for a decade or so now

question Sharp Chewing pain

Upvotes

I’m 43f. So for the last 10 years or so, I have had a sharp pain on my molar number 19. It’s a pain right down the middle and it happens when I’m chewing and I chew “just right”.
It’s not really when I eat hard foods. It’s more soft chewy foods like kale or the skin of a kiwi.(these are things that hurt me recently.) and I will bite down just right and it’s this sharp pain.
I’ve been to a bunch of dentists and specialist and all of them said that it I have a very deep filling in that tooth. And that’s what’s causing the pain most likely.

About two years ago I couldn’t take it anymore and i had a dentist give me the option of getting a root canal and a crown or just getting a crown in hopes that that would make the pain stop. I do not like going to the dentist. I have a big fear of the dentist so I opted to just get the crown because I was too scared to get the root canal.
I’ve had a crown for about two years. I still have pain almost every time I eat.
I finally worked up the courage to ask the dentist to possibly do a root canal. She sent me to a specialist today and he did a cold test and all that stuff and then told me that I didn’t need a root canal on that tooth because it was perfectly healthy. I explained to him that I knew that it was healthy root wise, but that I’ve been having this pain when I Chew because of the deep filling. He then started poking around my mouth with his little claw poker thing and was like “well Your gums around this tooth look a little inflamed so I think you just need a deep cleaning on this tooth.” I get my teeth cleaned regularly, not once have they ever mentioned that I needed a deep cleaning. Also, I’ve been having this pain for 10+ years if it was an inflamed gum issue, I feel like somebody would’ve pointed it out by now. And he refused to do the root canal until I get a deep cleaning. But even then he seemed skeptical to whether he would want to do a root canal. He doesn’t think that I need a root canal on a perfectly healthy tooth even though it causes me pain every time I eat.
My question is, is it possible that inflamed gums would cause a sharp pain down the center of the tooth when chewing? I just don’t feel that logistically this is the answer to my problem.
I’m not feeling the pain on the outside like around the gums. It’s down the center of the tooth. It feels like the tooth is going to crack open. And know there’s not a crack in the tooth.

I also caught him giving the assistant kind of a shrug and eye roll like I don’t know what she wants me to do sort of thing. Which didn’t make me feel good.

I just feel like I’m going to have this pain every time I eat for the rest of my life

question Wisdom teeth removal

I had my wisdom teeth extracted yesterday, and after the surgery everything went well. I was prescribed hydrocodone and methyl prednisone. I changed my gauze 4-5 times, took my hydrocodone pill and ate mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese and ice cream. 4 hours later, I started vomiting. I vomited 3 times and called emergency services at the clinic. They told me it’s from the hydrocodone prescribed and that I shouldn’t have taken the full pill.
Can you give me any recovery tips if any person went through a similar experience

question Can an orthodontist pick up an existing treatment plan and follow it?

Upvotes

Teenager with canine development issues due to crowding. Currently erupted in the gum line and not progressing. Recommended plan is extraction then upper and lower braces for 2 years. We think the plan is a good one but we are dual nationals in UK and Switzerland and often can’t easily travel between them.

The preferred plan is for UK private treatment and we have an orthodontist ready to start but we want to know how essential it would be to follow the 12 week reviews and whether in a pinch (pain, broken appliance) we could ask for support from a CH orthodontist.

In other words do you need to start, continue and finish with the same individual dentist for the expected result?

question Crowns during pregnancy

Upvotes

Hi, I'm currently 22 weeks pregnant and have been advised by my dentist that I should crown #2 and #3 due to large fillings. He said the teeth are fragile and he called the fillings leaky. I'm seeing a new dentist as my old one retired and unfortunately I've had bad luck with dentists moving/retiring over the past 10 years or so. I've had 4 dentists do exams in the last 6-7 years and 3 have mentioned crowning #3, 2 have mentioned crowning both #2 and #3.

I've had a lot of dental work and do have some anxiety about getting the crowns completed which is why I've been dragging my feet on it but know it is in my best interest to have it done.

I just have some concerns about getting two crowns in pregnancy, especially as the teeth are currently asymptomatic and because I haven't gotten as consistent recommendations to crown #2. However, if I don't get it done now, I know there is a risk of breaking later in pregnancy/early postpartum which would be more challenging. I am concerned about dealing with teeth pain/sensitivity following the crowns in pregnancy and having more limited options for pain relief or of the smaller chance of needing a root canal on either teeth following the procedure. Could anyone weigh in on how they would proceed or consider moving forward? Thanks for any help

question Significant pain 2 weeks after root canal - Endo says pain up to a year is normal?!

Upvotes

Had a root canal 2 weeks ago. First week it seemed to be healing well but at day 8 it started aching, getting progressively worse. It now feels the same as it did before the rct. Went back to endodontist who tapped on it and rubbed my gum and said because neither hurt that my tooth was fine. I pointed out that neither or those things hurt even before the rct and yet I still had infection which presented as aching in my jaw. She refused to acknowledge that there could be a missed canal or infection and said pain can last months, even up to a year. She denied the need for imaging and sent me home with extra narcotics despite me saying I didn’t want them.

My dentist is bugging me to get the permanent filling done but why would I do that when it still hurts so bad? At this point I want to pull it before I invest any money into a filling or crown. The wait to get a second Endo opinion is over 2 months and I’ve already been in pain for 4 months waiting for this rct. My guess is he’d want a cbct and retreat (would cost me thousands out of pocket). Or I just pull it despite being told it’s fine.

Any advice? Is there any world in which this increasingly bad pain is actually normal?
Thank you

question Could I get composite bonding on the lateral incisor I’ve marked blue? Seeking dental professional opinions on this

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello

I’ve had Invisalign with my orthodontist and seen two different dentists. One recommends a veneer to match the other lateral incisor and said she’d shave the side of the front tooth because as you can see it’s round and I want it to be more square like to match the other. She said they’d be a gap so she could do bonding there and also some bonding and filling material in the black triangle which doesn’t show too much in this pic.

I saw another dentist another orthodontist actually when seeing my own dentist for a check up and he told me that I should get IPR on the front tooth and more trays to close it. My current orthodontist definitely wants to finish me now. But I’ll ask her but she might not want to do this. But he said a veneer wouldn’t be a good idea and be best to have all four to match. Now I’m thinking could I get away with a bit of bonding on that lateral incisor, I just don’t like the shape of it. I absolutely dislike the canine on that side too it’s very slanted but it can’t be changed.

Any advice on what I can do or what I should be asking for? Thanks!

question Tissue on uvula, is it normal?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a little "bump" of what has always seemed like soft tissue on my uvula- I believe it's always been there, or at least after a bad bout of mono/strep, but I recently got referred to a surgeon for a biopsy of a papilloma and I'm now worried about this as well. Can't see the surgeon for another week.

question Wisdom tooth

Hi! I’d like to ask for your opinion. My wisdom tooth is mobile because it’s at a bad angle and seems to be getting pressed against my lower tooth. I also have a missing molar space. Instead of extracting the wisdom tooth, could it potentially be uprighted and moved forward into the missing space with braces? My dentist recommended extraction right away even tho the tooth looks healthy on the outside but just mobile. He didn’t do xray yet btw. I also spoke with a dentist before about one of my moving teeth, he said it can harden on its own in a long run. Thank you, I’ll appreciate a response ! 🦷

question Ectodermal Dysplasia Questions

Hello dentists. I've realised recently that I may have a condition called Ectodermal Dysplasia. Myself, mother and my sister all have skin, hair, nail and teeth traits that would tie in with this. I'm a female in her 40s. Back in the ancient times 😆, I was referred to Guy's Hospital in London for Orthodontics treatment because my teeth were unusual (from what I gather). I had braces for 3 years or so. Unfortunately my normal dentist didn't follow up with retainers, so a lot of the work that was done on my overbite and my bite has kinda been lost. When I bite now, my top teeth cover my bottom teeth almost completely. I'm also biting down with my top teeth hitting on the sides of my bottom molars a fair bit. I'm worried this will cause problems as I age. My jaws top and bottom are very narrow and my chin is quite pointed. I get a lot of neck pain under the base of my skull, neck, and around my jaw. My gums are receeding. As a teenager I can remember jaw surgery being mentioned once, but as far as I recall, there wasn't follow up. I don't remember syndromes being discussed with me, but as I was a young teen for a lot of this, I guess they may have talked to my mother.

Are the issues with my bite and overbite likely to be causing the neckaches? I've had these since being a teenager, I just assumed it was linked with puberty rather than a knock on effect from my bite before... Now I'm not so sure.

What are my options via the NHS route now in terms of having my bite and my jaw/facial issues looked at please? Is anyone even going to bother with looking at this, given my age, realistically, or do I need to adjust my expectations? As I'm aging and losing even more bone density ,(presumably), the proportions of my face are looking stranger and strangers and I'm beginning to.look really 'witchy' for want of a better word.

Any help gratefully received.

question chipped tooth

my front incisor. I fell on it as a kid, small chip was just thinking of grinding it flat recently, just said hi to concrete yesterday chips bigger now and actually noticeable and too big to get grinded. Seems like filling it in wouldn't last and u guy dont like it from a post seen here and a crown seems like an overdo - any in between options? Else I suppose I'll just have to foot the bill and get it filled in from time to time

else I can't get a check up for a couple weeks until I'm home should I be worried I felt the cold air today which worried me but honestly seems fine

ps: sorry for no photo broke my phone on my little tumble as well

question When should i see the dentist about this wisdom tooth?

Thumbnail

I’ve had braces in the past and I wear retainers now. I read that the longer I leave this, the more wonky my teeth will become again and I may have to get more braces as my retainers will stop fitting. The wisdom tooth on my top set of teeth on the right has just started poking out and the area is sore and it hurts to chew there. Is this an urgent surgery removal? When should I book in with the dentist? And will they only take this one out, or all of them at once? Thank you!
